THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 You almost never see players like Pillar traded. Players with 5 years of control and on rookie contracts coming off a 4 WAR season is extremely valuable to the team and you never would get full value in a trade. That's true, maybe he would demand a better package if he repeated another 4 WAR season, but it's more likely he regresses due to his terrible offensive approach, so it would be smart to sell high this off-season.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Tulo could likely play an elite 3rd, I think that's a non-issue. a non-issue? The only way Tulo lives up to his contract is IF he plays SS. You want Cleveland to take on that contract and then immediately torpedo his value? Where do you come up with this stuff?
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Salazar is not quite as good as Carrasco. He is certainly has some high quality pitches though and is also significantly younger than Cookie. Him + Stroman would make a great tandem at the top of the rotation.

What is the point of "selling high" if you only get back 75% of his value? I think there is potential in the bat, he looked better in the last couple months. Pillar is the perfect high floor CF the team needs. If you trade him and Pompey falters then you are stuck with no CF which would be a huge risk to take. I hate the notion on here that just because a player had a great season we have to "sell high" and trade them for an outstanding package that might not even exist. Donaldson probably had the best year he will ever have in his career. Should the Blue Jays sell high on him? Of course not.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I don't understand why you think you would only get back 75%? I probably shouldn't of used a number. Just think that players players with on rookie salaries with long term control rarely get traded anymore. So if you do trade him then you might not get his "full value" back.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Going back to 2012 the only player I found to get traded in a similar situation as Pillar was Ben Revere to the Phillies from the Twins. And he didn't have nearly as good of a season as Pillar did.

Teams trade young, good, controllable players quite often. They don't particularly like to because they recognize the value of them - which is also precisely why Pillar would have good trade value. You're falling into a bit of a WAR trap though, to be honest. War is a descriptive, not a predictive, statistic. Kevin Pillar isn't a 4.3 win player. Still should of realized that though lol. I'd still say players with long term control coming off that good of a season hardly ever get traded. Teams value cheap years of control more than ever now. Obviously Pillar projected to be an annual 4 Win player because of the likelihood of him replicating the defense he produced. Still, I don't see him being traded.

The defense will regress a bit no doubt, he's still a stud defender. The offense is coming along nicely, which most of this board disregards because they see him chase a couple of bad pitches.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Maybe we should find 8 more Pillar's

The kid makes his mind up hes swinging before the catcher drops a sign to the pitcher, as illustrated by his paltry 4.5% BB rate. He hasnt improved his plate discipline one bit since he's been in the majors, with his only caveat being able to make contact at an elite level even on pitches out of the zone. If he ever does figure it out though, he'd be a solid hitter.

He's probably an easy 4 WAR player if he does that.

baloojayz Verified Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 When Michael Saunders went down in ST (and even in the offseason), we had huge question marks in our outfield, especially LF and CF (we had Pompey back then too). Yet for some reason, after we make the playoffs, many people feel we can trade Revere, Pillar, and move Bautista to 1B.

It has nothing to do with spraying the ball all over the field, he needs to learn to lay off pitches that are terrible, which he's shown no ability to do up to this point in his career.
mur_phy Verified Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Interesting in all the talk of the composition of the outfield has found nothing mentioned of FA Cespedes. Not sure how his clubhouse demeanor is but certainly has tools that fit with the Jays. Add him along with Chris Davis. Keep Saunders as 4th OF and let Pompey develop. Rogers have good businessmen involved and have seen what a winning team can do for ticket sales and TV viewership and likely will approve a significant growth in payroll even with all the guessing being done on how little it might be. There is a tremendous opportunity right now to put together a major team for some years to come and there are FA pitchers and ones to be traded for that could be great fits with the team. FA's like the idea of being on a potential winner and they certainly can see what is happening in TO. Add Davis + Cespedes and there will be lots of interest. Save the money unless the bank vault really opens and pass on Price. Try to keep Navarro also if possible and it could easily be accomplished as one more years has passed and likely he can't find a full time catching position and may very well enjoy the possibility of actually being able to be in post season and maybe a WS champ. It will be fun to watch what actually happens during the next few months and if the right moves are made be a lot of fun for the season of 2016.

Cespedes is probably going to cost north of 20 million per year. He has a scary skillset, and is coming off a career year. No thank you.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 To some posters, you just need to add WAR and it doesn't matter where it comes from lol The idea is that a team that scores lots of runs depends less on run prevention than a team with a s***** offense. This held true for this team. The idea is that I'd like is invest in an elite defensive RF who can hit (Heyward) and fill in the rotation with the Lackeys, Kennedys, Chens and Hills of the world. That is more than adequate with a lot less risk.

We have plenty of hitting, but we need starting pitching. We had plenty of hitting this year, but we didn't win it all. A lot of things happen in the playoffs that you can't just look at numbers and projections/predictions and say this is things we'll turn out.
