glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Yeah I don't see anything about a roster move happening today. Plus, it's not Friday, so there can't be a move today.

Roster announcement could be an extension. Who knows, I haven't heard anything else anywhere so I'm inclined to discount it but could be a JD/EE/JB extension, or a Stroman extension for all we know.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Blue Jays roster announcement coming today. Says who?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Says who? says TDotttt2005 - his name is in the top left hand corner of his post.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 If you thought Martin was good at framing before, new stats suggest he's even better. http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/162681558/mlb-effect-expanded-catcher-statistics I suspect the ******* who voted for Jason Kendell in the HOF vote this year didn't catch this article.

Utter stupidity.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Practically this entire board was screaming at them to trade Navarro for a reliever or something but no... Navarro's clutch profressional hitting was worth a lot more than a reliever, and was definitely worth beating up the $82m investment all season. Did I mention how glad I am that Shapiro and Atkins are here? If I haven't, I am.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Practically this entire board was screaming at them to trade Navarro for a reliever or something but no... f***. Alex could rape Stewart trading Navarro to the Dbacks, but Gibbons loves the chubby Mexican so much

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Practically this entire board was screaming at them to trade Navarro for a reliever or something but no... True - but there were also a lot of people who wanted him to catch Martin because that meant he wouldn't "sit" during a playoff game...You let him catch the traditional pitchers where he adds a ton of extra value (which is negated when catching Dickey).
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 True - but there were also a lot of people who wanted him to catch Martin because that meant he wouldn't "sit" during a playoff game...You let him catch the traditional pitchers where he adds a ton of extra value (which is negated when catching Dickey). I wasn't opposed to him catching Dickey especially over rostering three catchers but he struggled with it more than I expected. If you add someone like Kratz to the Bisons, I think the current setup is probably ideal. I know some will say that Martin's struggles when catching Dickey are just a small sample size aberration and that might very well be true but in the time it would take to normalize something like that, Dickey will be gone. The eye test says that it affected Martin and I'd rather err on the side of caution and assume it's a real thing. The Jays re-signing Thole to a Major League deal suggest that the braintrust sees it that way too.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Pretty big risk to go into season with Thole as the main backup
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Pretty big risk to go into season with Thole as the main backup As bad of a hitter as he is and as much as he's disliked, Thole isn't exceptionally bad for a backup catcher. What compounds the issue is that the third catcher on the 40 is Jimenez with not a whole lot behind him either. Pentecost might not even be a catcher anymore and Jansen is only 20. Chung is a solid catch and throw guy and could be an emergency 40 man roster add. A veteran catcher at AAA would be very welcome.

Humberto Quintero is on a NRI with the Jays, if you're wondering about a veteran catcher.
nmrch Verified Member Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 (edited) Pretty big risk to go into season with Thole as the main backup Thole is good enough for what he's supposed to do, by definition backups aren't supposed to be good, otherwise you'd be misallocating resources. We gave Martin quite a workload last year, if there isn't a plan to scale that back significantly there's no point in investing in a good backup. Edited January 26, 2016 by nmrch
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Humberto Quintero is on a NRI with the Jays, if you're wondering about a veteran catcher. Oh yeah... Forgot about him. I'd like to know what the Jays scout see in him. Presumably he's quiet enough behind the plate to be able to adapt to the knuckler. In the past, Nickeas has served the role of third knuckleball option (and thankfully was never needed).

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Russell Martin has made the playoffs 8 out of 10 seasons with 4 different teams in 3 different divisions. The two times his teams have missed the playoffs, once when he suffered significant injury People don't understand how good that is. This guy is a 8-10 WAR player when you factor in all of his contributions
rydermike Verified Member Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 In the past, Nickeas has served the role of third knuckleball option (and thankfully was never needed). You mean you're forgetting that one game where he came in as a defensive replacement and didn't record an at-bat??? I did too lol, just saw it on wikipedia when I looked it up to see if he was still in baseball (The answer is no, by the way)

There should be some options in spring training. Just looking at last year, there was Lavarnway, Leon, Ohlman, Saltalamacchia. Not great, but fine for AAA.
