Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 You could be right, I'm just parroting what JD said after last years arb, and prior to this one. yeah, I remember when he lost last year it was really no big deal, as he said, "part of the business,it's over , I lost, Now lets play ball". I don't think this will bother him AT ALL.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 $450k this year isn't a big deal, but what about next year and the year after? Keeping costs down on controlled players even at small amounts adds up large over time.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I simply cannot agree. Arbitration, as Davidi said on the Fan this morning, is a potentially nasty process and to possibly take on Donaldson and his representatives in a formal adversarial hearing two years in a row, especially after he just won the AL MVP, over $450,000 is a PR disaster and runs the very real risk of alienating the player from the organization. I have sat in and been formally trained in arbitration (not related to sports I admit) and they are usually ugly affairs and often a point of last resort to avoid court proceedings after mediation has failed. Could we assume arbitration in baseball is a little easier than when required for non-sport contract matters? I mean each side is generally going to site previous cases, tack on some inflation, throw in some 'soft' factors and then the arbitrator will make a decision. This isn't some divorce case where one side is going to throw out claims that the other neglected their kids or wasted their cash with cheap hookers or something.
Praxis Verified Member Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 You could be right, I'm just parroting what JD said after last years arb, and prior to this one. Fair enough; no offense meant on my part either. This isn't some divorce case where one side is going to throw out claims that the other neglected their kids or wasted their cash with cheap hookers or something. This is sadly very close to the truth in some cases!

I assume Shapiro? Were they during the Beeston/AA regime? (I think the answer is yes).

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 we are becoming a penny pinching low budget team. no wonder AA wanted out of this s*** hole.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 That's not really fair. They're offering Donaldson plenty of money. You have to draw a line somewhere. If they offered him $12 million, and Donaldson wanted $12.5 million, would we have to give it to him to avoid being cheap? If they offered him $14 million, and Donaldson wanted $14.5 million, would they have to give it to him to avoid being cheap? Donaldson is being petty. The Jays won his arb case last year and will prob win again this year. Which means, the Jays are being generous enough in their offers.

That said, the slight could piss him off, and "could" decrease the chances of negotiating a team friendly extension, but perhaps they only intend to ride out his 3-yr deal.

JD has one big free agent contract coming, health permitting. Hard to see him signing a team friendly deal.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 JD has one big free agent contract coming, health permitting. Hard to see him signing a team friendly deal. Exactly. Given how money-oriented Donaldson has been, the odds of him coming back to the Jays are slim to none anyways.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 I'm not sure what happened to Yoervis Medina last year, but he'd be a good buy-low depth addition given his strong numbers from the two seasons prior.

Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 I want us to bring in Lucroy for our backup!!! Or he can split time with Martin.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 I want us to bring in Lucroy for our backup!!! Or he can split time with Martin. While Lucroy is a great player, that doesn't feel like good roster optimization.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2016 Posted January 20, 2016 Can Lucroy catch knuckle
nmrch Verified Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I want us to bring in Lucroy for our backup!!! Or he can split time with Martin. Jonathan Lucroy even with his injury problems, put up the same WAR as Martin did in the last 4 years. He's arguably a better catcher if you believe staying healthy isn't a skill. And someone can correct me if i'm wrong but he's also as good if not a better framer. So like Cyborg said, not a good a way to make the most of your resources at hand.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 You move Martin to SS, DH Tulo to save his health, and trade Edwin.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 we are becoming a penny pinching low budget team. no wonder AA wanted out of this s*** hole. Agree. It's a good article by Rosenthal. Shapiro is penny pinching and you worry that he might not be looking at the whole picture. The jury is still out on how he performs in a larger market like Toronto, IMO. I haven't been impressed yet. He could be a guy who sticks to his computer and doesn't often think outside of quantitative analysis, which would be a big problem obviously.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 How the f*** is Shapiro penny-pinching? The roster was basically set the day he took over. Minor tweaks were needed, and minor tweaks are what we got.

Minor tweaks were needed, and minor tweaks are what we got. Shapiro showed no interest in Price or other higher priced free agents. He's taking Donaldson to arbitration over a petty amount, and potentially hurting future negotations? He constantly talks about preserving the farm. Sorry but the team has a clear window to compete next season and they sign... Estrada and Happ? Are you kidding? Both those guys are useful, but it's time to take a chance for short term gain. Poor roster management IMO.
