Shapiro showed no interest in Price or other higher priced free agents. He's taking Donaldson to arbitration over a petty amount, and potentially hurting future negotations? He constantly talks about preserving the farm. Sorry but the team has a clear window to compete next season and they sign... Estrada and Happ? Are you kidding? Both those guys are useful, but it's time to take a chance for short term gain. Poor roster management IMO.

The new FO looks brilliant for signing these guys early IMO.

Why on earth would Price havr been a good investment? If you're talking about winning now with a short window but it's a good idea to lock a 30+ year old up for 6+ years? That's not a worthwhile risk to take.

Mark Shapiro doesn't dictate payroll...

yeah he was brought in for his penny pinching tactics and he's just doing his job. Moneyball!

I don't get it. Payroll is going to sit in the 10-15 range in the league either way. Would you prefer someone who is likely to be successful in that context or someone who isn't?

When did I say that? I said he showed no interest. IMO it's important to at least express interest in top tier free agents especially where the Jays are.

Why put on a show for the media if you have no interest?

Is this not obvious to you or something? I can use smaller words.

You might want to try NOT being a prick when you suggest an idiotic idea. Russell Martin at SS? When he hasn't played a single MLB game at that position?

"Showing interest" in Price would have meant making him an insulting offer. So maybe it's better they didn't. Our highest offer likely would have been around 6/120

Basically what BTS said. Why pretend to go after someone that you're not even going to come close to making a competitive offer. If anything that makes you look more like a joke as a franchise.

So basically what you're saying is he has zero errors playing shortstop? That's dozens less than Tulo...

No it doesn't. It's not pretending, it's negotiating what might be a reasonable price. Not even pursuing a player who you traded for, and helped you into the playoffs, or at least bringing your intent to the media, is an absolutely retarded idea. Shapiro made a big mistake here but you can turn a blind eye if you think you're smart. That's just my honest opinion here, I'm not trying to be a jerk, I just think it was a big mistake on Shapiro's part.

people might be amazed what companies will do for image.

Exactly... so some idiots who pretend to be good posters need to take a back seat as usual

I agree with them about it being a dumb move if the team gets caught. lol

Dude, that post was dripping in sarcasm.

ITT, people seemingly forgetting the Russell Martin WBC fiasco where he only wanted to play for Canada if he could be the shortstop. It was a dumb idea then, it's an even dumber idea now. That's the joke.

With an absurd suggestion of landing Lucroy as our back-up.

f*** you for doubting Captain Canada. He wanted to play SS for us in the WBC. Do you not believe in him? Are you even a real Blue Jays fan? f*** off mate.

Shapiro f***ed up royally by not wasting the time of multiple people and offering someone a contact he was 100% sure would be declined.

I would prefer someone that treats their MVP star player better. saving a few bucks vs keeping your best player happy. I don't like where his/Rogers priorities are at.

If Shapiro came out and said "we want to bring him back", what exactly would have happened? Would fan reaction have been kinder to him? I'm not sure what purpose that would have served other than outright lying to the fans for no reason.

Price was not going to sign for less than $200m so your point about negotiating a reasonable price makes no sense. There was never a chance to sign him for a reasonable price. That was the whole point.

If Shapiro came out and said he's after Cespedes right now, and then Cespedes signs with another team, who's going to care that Shapiro expressed interest? It's a meaningless exercise. There are better ways to improve optics.

I would rather hear from Price's agent that we at least talked to him and made some "reasonable" offer. Even if it was only 150M, at least you tried.
