Laika Community Moderator Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Listening to the mlb pipeline and they did some off the cuff rankings of the NL and AL east farm systems. We were 5th ahead of the yanks and red sox. Kind of surprising. The impression im getting from a lot of different prospect guys is that they seem to like whatÂ’s coming up from A ball and below. makes sense phillies and braves are not good toronto is clearly worse than baltimore, tampa bay, washington prooooobably worse than the yankees IMO but I dunno, maybe not. kind of just a middle tier that is five teams thick if you are only thinking of the 10 teams in the east divisions.

Yea, it seems like they have us, the yanks and red sox, and mets in a middle group after those three.

Boston has a better top end with Mayer, Casas, and Rafaela, but their depth is pretty awful. They might have the worst pitching prospects in baseball. New York has better high end prospects and better depth than us in my opinion, but I can understand the argument for the Jays.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Not as high on Zulueta as most others? Seeing Zulueta behind Palmegiani and Nunez, both of whom probably aren't even in our top 20, was the first thing that stood out to me. It seems that he's more concerned with raw statistics than age/level. I'm not saying that's wrong, but you see it reflected in several ratings.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Tucker Toman at 13 was another one that I found interesting. I try to be more open minded about recent draftees, but it's certainly lower than most people have him.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Its my rankings on the Jays prospects from a fantasy centric viewpoint with writeups on the top 15. You don't have to read it if you don't want to Love the aggressive ranking with Orelvis considering this is a fantasy writeup. The bar to be fantasy relevant is so much higher than being big league relevant and he has a chance to be a 30 homer guy with SS eligibility.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Not as high on Zulueta as most others? Yes and no. I think he is Pearson at this point. Back end reliever most likely Seeing Zulueta behind Palmegiani and Nunez, both of whom probably aren't even in our top 20, was the first thing that stood out to me. It seems that he's more concerned with raw statistics than age/level. I'm not saying that's wrong, but you see it reflected in several ratings. Actually age/level is a big factor. I think Rainer and Palmegiani are extremely undervalued compared to what they have done and what they can do. Tucker Toman at 13 was another one that I found interesting. Toman has big potential and can move quickly up. Along with Santos, Macko, Doughty, Brown, and De Jesus I think. I think right now all have a lot of questions. Biggest thing I see with Toman is the difference between his LH swing and his RH swing. The RH one needs a lot of work I think. Love that he is a switch hitter though In fantasy I think its a fine line between age/level, actual numbers, underlying numbers, statcast, projection

You don't have to read it if you don't want to Interesting that you have Barger and Damiano Palmegiani higher than most. Is that stats based or watching them? Barger had great stats last year, on the surface Palmegiani did not. However I saw a while ago a projection system had him already at 100+ wRC in the majors. A couple of guys rolled their eyes at that because he just hit .239 in the minors at age 23. Though he has good walk rates and some power so maybe the projection system is picking up something (k/bb may be better than Barger, don't have time to look it up right now)

So avg just better than 4th. I'm actually a little lower than that. His swing to me is more of a Bo Bichette violent swing and Biggio's overly high launch angle and upper cut. Should be a great low ball hitter, but seems he could be bad in the upper part of the zone. That hole and possible platoon risk have me down at 4 for him. I think he becomes more of a full utility type of bat, but 2B could be his down the line. More of a needing to show more confirmation of the changes he made and that he can do it vs good pitchig consistently. I really didnt like his AZ Fall league numbers, but SSS. The big shift is whether he keeps his K% under 30% or goes back up over 30% With Palmegiani, this is part of what I have in his writeup Damiano was an above average player at A Ball (141 wRC+) and A+ (116 wRC+) as a 22 year old. Damanio paired good exit velocities (87.4 avg and 109.2 max) at Dunedin with great launch angles (18 degrees) to help produce his home runs. The drop off between A and A+ production was fueled by an abnormally low BABIP (0.239) given the rest of his metrics remained relatively the same including his BB%, K%, LD%, GB%, FB%, and hits to pull, center, and oppo Pretty much everything was the same between A and A+ except the BABIP, which I think is more of a clear bad luck type scenario Just naturally if Palmegiani continues with the 10+ BB% and 20 K%, the ability to hit the ball hard and often should see his AVG come up I think the biggest difference I had from most was Rainer Nunez. Most have him unranked or sub 25th

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 Gotta admit, Rainer Nunez looks "hitterish" Maybe the hit tool is good enough to carry him, despite being a RBH 1B without good K-BB numbers. His DOWL performance was no joke, given his age. At 21 he was the 7th youngest hitter down there and he outperformed tons of big league veterans. The only players down there under 24 years old with a better OPS were Oneil Cruz, Ronny Mauricio, and Elly De La Cruz and they are all top 100 prospects. But they also ALL K'd more often than Nunez in the DOWL. Rowdy Tellez in 2015 between A and A+ .289/.347/.454 103 games, 38 walks, 84 Ks Nunez 2022 in A and A+ .304/.340/.484 121 games, 24 walks, 109 Ks It's like if late career Salvador Perez was re-born as a 1B prospect. He was a year older than Rowdy. But, Nunez also lost a critical development year to the Covid season so that kind of cancels out?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 Nunez doesn't really look like a 1B only guy to me but I'm basing that entirely on that video and the fact that he's played some 3B before. Can he really not play LF or RF?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 rainer nunez vs sal perez He looks a little more thin today than he does in that picture above.
