CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 wouldn't surprise me if Alex becomes the GM of Montreal when a MLB team eventually returns there.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 The Jays aren't much better than the whitesox right now

Meh the only thing notable about him during his Blue Jays career was his name. He's basically not the same player anymore. Maybe the organization should've reworked mechanics or asked him to change his approach but I don't think you can fault then too much for releasing him. Plus, he's still far from a guarantee to have any major league value.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Hey, at least we're not the Orioles. One of the worst farm systems in the majors, and likely screwed for the next few years because Dan Duqette made some bad trades (Miller for Ed-Rod, anyone?) and standing to lose most of their core to free agency, with little chance of them being resigned due to cheap ownership(due to the MASN fight with the Nats) and Manny Machado's huge arb raise coming in 2016. Oh, and top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy has bust written all over him due to injuries. Or the Detroit Tigers, who have the worst farm in the majors, and will begin paying for it next year ($111.8M for 5 players, losing Price, Davis, Avila and Cespedes, and about to see JD Martinez's salary spike.. what a mess that franchise is.) Yeah, it'd suck to have playoff appearances in recent memory like the Orioles or even a couple World Series appearances like the Tigers. It's waaaaay better to miss the playoffs for 21 straight years, soon to be 22.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 wouldn't surprise me if Alex becomes the GM of Montreal when a MLB team eventually returns there. Why? It's not like they'd have any reason to fire Silverman.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Billy Beane? Decent chance that Billy Beane is a terrible GM who just surrounds himself with very smart people.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Decent chance that Billy Beane is a terrible GM who just surrounds himself with very smart people. You could say surrounding yourself with smart people is very smart.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Decent chance that Billy Beane is a terrible GM who just surrounds himself with very smart people. What difference does it make? AA could learn a thing or two. Choice of FO staff is an important part of being in that position.
Praxis Verified Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Brilliant quote from BB Banter "Many optimistic fans are still hoping for Dickey to turn it around, but right now the trade with the Mets looks like swapping Enron for Netflix and Amazon." Now my sig. for a bit.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 You could say surrounding yourself with smart people is very smart. Actually I agree completely. And it should be an even bigger credit that he actually listens to those people. For a guy to step into a front office after being a baseball player himself, it's very redeeming that he was able to embrace statistics and people who knew more than him, rather than religiously stick to scouting. It's more than most GMs could say. The problem that exists though, is that when the smartest of those smart people someday leave, how does he pick up the pieces? Signing Billy Butler to a three-year contract two weeks after Farhan Zaidi leaves your organization (and trading Donaldson two weeks after that) does not incite a ton of optimism in that regard. The Athletics front office is probably a very good one, but Billy Beane is probably not a very good general manager.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Balbino spent four seasons playing in Lansing and was awful in his last, 2013 at 23 years old. This has nothing to do with AA's performance as General Manager of the Blue Jays. It's just a weird thing that happened. Yeah...You missed my sarcasm...
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Why? It's not like they'd have any reason to fire Silverman. Manfred is talking about expansion.
jays76 Verified Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 (edited) I just hope AA & Rogers don't dick around this deadline. The problem going into this season was he needed a starter and bullpen help. Well guess what it's mid season and I'm sure that's cost us more than a handful of games now along with potentially first place in the AL East. Everyone was flabbergasted he didn't address it inspite of an otherwise stellar offseason in all other areas, and all year he's been saying all the right things along with Beeston's payroll bump promise (don't forget). He's got assets, leftover money, Beeston's payroll promises, and Navarro is still here. It's time to knockoff the BS and make something happen AA. Edited July 30, 2015 by jays76
jays76 Verified Member Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Btw- I think AA has been decent during his tenure: Good drafting- (Lansing trio and the numerous other pitchers minus Deck McGuire). Sub par trading- (Dickey & the Marlins disaster obviously along with the horrendous Yan Gomes debacle) but he did shed Vernon Wells and snag Josh (fysmc) Donaldson so it isn't all bad. AA royally f***ed up team & fan momentum last deadline so let's pray that doesn't happen again this year or it's back to back years of blown playoff opportunity. We'll have to fully judge him post deadline and after we see where the team ends up this year (potentially his final year).

CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 so more than double the people here disapprove rather than approve the job that AA has done ... does doing the impossible (dealing Reyes) move the needle at all?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 so more than double the people here disapprove rather than approve the job that AA has done ... does doing the impossible (dealing Reyes) move the needle at all? actually he had an offer for Reyes last year for Iglesias and turned it down.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 actually he had an offer for Reyes last year for Iglesias and turned it down. i'm just repeating what i've read almost everybody on here (who has chimed in on Reyes) state ... that we're stuck with him because he's impossible to trade.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 so more than double the people here disapprove rather than approve the job that AA has done ... does doing the impossible (dealing Reyes) move the needle at all? Slight bounceback. Still needs to get a SP before I swing back to approve
Sparky12 Verified Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Obviously he needs to address our starting pitching, but constructing a roster that can produce a line up when all healthy of Travis Donaldson Tulo Bautista EE Martin Smoak Saunders Pillar That is really undeniably impressive
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Donaldson trade FTW. Approve, even though I dislike to admit it. Damn, I wish I could go back in time to vote "Strongly approve". "Approve" is close enough so I'll take it.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 actually he had an offer for Reyes last year for Iglesias and turned it down. Back when he had no shins?
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Slight bounceback. Still needs to get a SP before I swing back to approve Me too. Personally, I voted strongly disapprove. Not because he hasn't added some great pieces, but more so because he hasn't been able to fill out the roster. He seems to always get 80% done and then...
Caper Verified Member Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 I strongly approve. I think he is a special GM, even though I agree with his biggest critics on some issues. What has hurt AA the most was having Bautista and EE in their prime and trying to make a couple of moves in order to try and make it work. Getting out of the Wells contract and trading for Tulo and Donaldson were great moves. Not fleecing moves, but great IMO. Signing Alford was great.
CrackerJack Verified Member Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 sounds like many of the 43% who disapproved (some vehemently) of Alex a few short weeks ago are now worried that he might bolt the organization ... lol
