Now with injuries Travis and Bautista, unless a potential pitcher is controllable for the next few years (either a long contract or young enough) I'd rather they stand pat.

 

Use the 40 million freed up by Buehrle, Romero, and Dickey on two starters in free agency (or through an offseason trade) and run with the two new guys + Stroman + two of Hutchison/Estrada/Norris.

Yes, although it might not be the worst thing if the Jays leave them in the pen for another year if they do get some legit pitchers for the rotation.

to be fair this really wasn't on our pitchers tonight, though I certainly don't want to see Doubront out there anymore. The one positive was that our BP looked great and Latroy had a nice debut.

Not at all but it's just so annoying that this is a multiple season problem and he just can't find a way to get it done.. Hawkins looked awesome, hopefully he stabilizes our pen.

I'd way rather take Shields if that's the cost for Cashner + Ross as I can't imagine Shields would take much more than Norris and some B guys.

I doubt Shields would cost even that much. If a team agreed to take the whole contract, pretty sure he could be had for next to nothing.

I would gut the farm team if we got 2 controllable starters to add to a team that will stay intact this offseason.

Good point the backloaded deal/opt-out definitely diminishes his value. I was thinking they'd want to recoup the comp pick they gave up.

Shields + Haren shouldn't cost Norris at all. Shield's remaining contract is stupid though and may handcuff the Jays for years to come unless Rogers opens up the piggy bank.

Agreed. The thought of giving up a lot of Kimbrel/Ross also makes my stomach turn.
