This is a good case where record doesn't show the true talent of the team. Like, compare the Tigers and the Jays. Last week at some point they were both at .500, but the Tigers were strongly considering to sell while the Jays were more than likely to be buyers. That's because it seems the Jays have been incredibly unlucky, as pointed by the run differential, so adding a big pitching piece can turn the favor for the Jays.

Remember that the Royals were a .500 team last year and they made the big push into Game 7. I think the Jays can make a similar push, only this time I think we could also compete for the AL East considering how many games we have against the Yankees. We just need better pitching.

I feel like Tyson Ross isn't the kind of pitcher to make a significant commitment to. Two straight years with a declining fastball velo and awful mechanics that result in awful control and make him a huge injury risk. I'd be all over him as a free agent on a short term deal, but I'm definitely not moving top assets for him.

I would be willing to give up big name prospects for Shark if we can get Robertson as well. Same with Kimbrel + Ross/Cashner.

it's a proposed trade from Mark DeRosa. Not sure why it's called Dero Demo. Maybe he's suggesting trades that would be destructive to teams?

Wonder if Mark DeRosa has some beef against the Jays or something, considering he played for them.

Royals have the best 7/8/9 inning combination in baseball. We have Shultz, Sanchez and Osuna.

It seems weird to be thinking about going "all-in" as a .500 team, but the only team ahead of the Blue Jays in the second wildcard race is the Twins, who are deeply flawed. Fangraphs thinks they still have a 10% shot at the division too. I definitely think we should do something.

I'm definitely in for doing something, just not at significant long-term cost for a rental. Hamels would be awesome. Edwin for a pitcher could make sense. Fiers. Gerardo Parra might come surprisingly cheap.

I agree with this. Cashner is a major injury risk, but it seems the price would be significantly less than Ross (albeit he has 1 less year of control too IIRC). He might be the guy I go after.

Yeah, I'd love to add Robertson or Kimbrel. I think people now kind of underrate the value of having 60-70 super elite innings from the pen.

Its like a pendulum effect. BP either seems super over-valued, or super under-valued.

Love those two pitchers, personally, and I don't think their contracts are exorbitant. If I could get Shark + Houdini or Kimbrel + Ross, I'd be willing to give up one of Norris or Hoffman + lesser pieces. Preferably, you make the other team take Navarro back to cut a couple million, but it wouldn't be a dealbreaker. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd even take Shields' contract. You cut the salaries of Buehrle + Dickey + Romero + Navarro next year and there's plenty of room for Shields + Kimbrel. Granted, if you're taking Shields' contract, you're not giving up much in the way of prospects.

I'd have no issues taking on Shields' contract. If I'm betting on a pitcher to stay healthy and productive for three more years, he's near the top of my list.

Yeah and that can happen with any stat really.

Look at OBP, for example. When this whole Moneyball craze started everyone used that one stat to point at guys like Adam Dunn and wonder if he's a Hall of Famer. Statistic analysis should always be looked at through the scope of market inefficiencies to really take full advantage of sabremetrics.

How big trades get made:

GM shoots the s*** with other GM

Various player names get thrown around

This goes nowhere so they meet for beers

After a few beers and some dirty jokes a consensus is reached

Names now need to be vetted

GM forwards names to Assistant GM

Assistant GM forwards names to Special Assistant

Special Assistant forwards names to Scouting dept

Scouting dept forwards names to Analytics department

Manager of Analytics dept tosses names to some underpaid kid fresh out of University (just completed his degree in computer science and mathematics)

Analytics kid enters names into some computational analytics programs, makes a few excel spreadsheets

Kid likes the trade and this is sent is back up the ladder

President reads a sentence or two in an email and approves trade in one word resonse "Approved"

Legal department composes some jargon contract using a template they stole from hacking Astro's file servers

Players do a blood test, piss test, jump through a few hoops before medical gives final okay

One year later trade is a complete flop

GM, Special Assistant, Scouting Director, Manager of Analytics Dept are all fired

Analytics Kid is promoted

Yeah he could replace Beurhle in both innings pitched and salary.

I'm pretty sure this could not be more wrong for like 27 or 28 teams.

Can we just remove Upton and Pillar and call it a deal?

The Blue Jays would say no. They still love Sanchez and would want to keep Pillar on the team (they don't seem ready to promote Pompey yet).

I feel like Aaron Sanchez sucks, but then again he does have a career 2.67 ERA through 101 IP. I'd do that trade though.

I think most people on here would be happy to take Shields' contract (it's been discussed in many threads). The Blue Jays are not going to land a similar pitcher for that amount in free agency and it isn't a bad contract by projected $/WAR arithmetic.

Give the Padres a decent prospect or two in return for Shields and Kimbrel, and request a small amount of 2015 salary relief.

It's giving up top prospects for a guy they could've had in FA that gets me annoyed.

It would be pretty funny if San Diego got one year of Shields for $10M and then got decent prospects for the remainder of his backloaded deal. Maybe Preller isn't quite as stupid as we think.
