DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Just listening to the Friday edition (July 10th) of Baseball Tonight Podcast, Buster Olney threw out if he was San Diego he'd be looking to be a seller and would put everyone out there (mentioned Cashner, Shields, Kimbrel, Upton) among others... Any ideas what kind of offers it would take to pry 2 (or maybe 3) from there? Seems very Marlins 2.0 of trying to get guys who just signed long term contracts with a new team and after it's not working trying to put them on our squad. Ross/Cashner + Shields + Kimbrel would be an interesting package for the Jays. A huge win-now move that would come at a massive cost but quite possibly put them over the hump. Curious to know what it would take to make it happen.

Just give them the keys to the farm now and be over with it...
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Joey Batz , buehrle to Texas for one of or both, nick Martinez, Alex Gonzales , Delino deshields jr, Keone kela and Ryan Cordell . With a Martinez and a deshields AA is closer to his Expos past! Lol
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Just give them the keys to the farm now and be over with it... Something massive.. Might be interested in Reyes though which could off-set some of the specs going the other way. Edit: Why not include a package for kicks; Hoffman + Sanchez + Castro + Reyes + Tellez + Boyd
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Unless we sign Cueto to an extension giving up Norris or Hoffman for him is a terrible idea. I think realistically he would only cost Norris.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I saw an article yesterday that said Shields is being actively shopped around. Padres are such a pathetic org.

LTR Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Let's get Shields! That would be fun and a great fit. As is the case with pretty much any good pitcher...
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Getting Sheilds + Kimbrel would be similar to the Marlins deal, where the team spends prospects in order to acquire free agent contracts. Shields would be the team's new Buehrle! Good, old, expensive.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Only the Padres GM is drunk enough to take Reyes so if you can get one of their big contracts while dropping Reyes at the same time, I'd consider it.

LTR Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Someone traded for Vernon Wells. Wells didn't let weak ground balls through his legs daily
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Padres are such a pathetic org. No kidding. If you thought AA's deals for Johnson and Dickey were bad, AJ Preller is even worse! He gave up a ton of talent for the Uptons (those pieces have helped Atlanta avoid embarrassing themselves, and have set them up well for the new stadium), Wil Myers (Nats are loving the trade for Joe Ross and 2016 SS Trea Turner, as Desmond is expected to depart via free agency. Tampa won and lost on the trade, however.. Souza has been their best piece in it, but have gotten burned on Burch Smith (TJS) and Rene Rivera(can't hit).) The Craig Kimbrel trade was also bad, as Maybin has finally blossomed in Atlanta, and Wisler has promise. The Norris trade was awful, as Jeese Hahn has been good for the A's. Basically, AJ Preller is the worst GM in baseball.. near RAJ bad.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Wells didn't let weak ground balls through his legs daily No but he did average an 80 wRC+ while playing subpar OF defense. 0.4 fWAR cumulative over 3 seasons with the Angels. Reyes isn't very good but he is still better than Amarista.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Someone traded for Vernon Wells. Yes, and that organization is lucky Mike Trout emerged, or they'd be in trouble.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Nobody is that stupid. I pray that the Yankees will be, that stupid! Give me Aaron judge too!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Nobody is that stupid. He traded for Matt Kemp and played Wil Myers in cf. He's the one GM who probably would value Reyes.
LTR Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 He traded for Matt Kemp and played Wil Myers in cf. He's the one GM who probably would value Reyes. He must have learned something. AA is not going to do another Marlins/Mets trade knowing what he knows today.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 He must have learned something. AA is not going to do another Marlins/Mets trade knowing what he knows today. The Marlins trade didn't work out that poorly for the Jays. JJ got hurt and Bonifacio is terrible but otherwise Buehrle, Buck and Reyes have been as expected. AA knew he was sacrificing some future value to get players that could make an immediate impact. The Dickey trade was just bad.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 He traded for Matt Kemp and played Wil Myers in cf. He's the one GM who probably would value Reyes. I think Reyes still has value, he's on a bad deal but either money or prospects can close the gap.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Reyes is a negative asset Kimbrel wasn't an FA but yeah. Although maybe Shields legitimately didn't want to sign here. Reyes has a bad contract, he's still a useful player. There are two easy ways to make up the gap in value; send/take money or send prospects.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Just send money then anything up to half is ok by me! Maybe the players will pass the hat for this one too!
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Kimbrel wasn't an FA but yeah. Although maybe Shields legitimately didn't want to sign here. Just in terms of contract size. He basically has a FA size deal. Reyes is owed $66M for 3 years after this one. His projected skill per 150 games is about 2.6 fWAR. Shields is owed almost the same as Reyes - 3/$65M. Option for the fourth year. His projected skill per 30 GS is a little over 3.0 fWAR. Kimbrel: 2.0 fWAR per 60 innings. Owed $11M and $13M in the next two years. The Blue Jays probably have to do something like including Reyes in a deal if they want the payroll to work this year. Reyes is roughly a non-asset, by about $10M. Shields arguably is an asset, by the same number. Kimbrel is worth ~$6M. The gap then is ~$26M in value. Round up to 30M for deadline premium. Which package of Jays prospects is worth about 30M dollars? Can Sanchez be the headliner? (lol).
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Can AA sell AJ on Pompey as the Padres' CF of the future? Probably not, but SS and CF are two positions they need to address. They did trade for Matt Kemp so who knows.

If we go by the updated prospect value, pitchers ranked 11-25 are worth about $24.5m. If Preller thinks Sanchez is a top 25 prospect (which is where he was on lists fwiw) then yeah he'd cover it. However in reality it'd probably be Reyes+Norris/Hoffman+something for Shields+Kimbrel. Still kinda enticing, tbh.

What SS are getting traded besides Tulo? (Really don't want him)
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
