GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I wonder if the Dodgers would do Rollins and Ethier for Reyes? Maybe Rollins and Crawford
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I wonder if the Dodgers would do Rollins and Ethier for Reyes? Is taking on below replacement level players on big contracts the new market inefficiency?
baubau Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I wonder if the Dodgers would do Rollins and Ethier for Reyes? Friedman: f*** no!
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 It doesn't have to cripple payroll. Outside of Donaldson, Bautista and Martin all the big contacts will be off the books. The lineup will have Stroman, Osuna, 2+ more young arms, Travis, Pompey/Alford/Vlad, among others still in their arb years. IMO if they can clear short-term money they'll be fine in the long run. We'd need other pieces, at least. Kemp is an awful player with tens of millions remaining, at least Reyes gives you SOME performance.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Is taking on below replacement level players on big contracts the new market inefficiency? Ethier has put up 1.7 WAR so far this year, is plus defensively in LF, and saves 4M / year over Reyes for the same term. Rollins is just flat out struggling this year offensively, but it's the final year of his contract and he has an excellent track record. Maybe getting him out of a pitcher's park will get him going. If not, play Goins. From the Dodger's perspective, Reyes is an upgrade over Rollins (at present), and Guerrero can take over in the field full time. I think it makes a certain amount of sense for both teams.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Words used in that paragraph. "[...] play Goins. [...] it makes a certain amount of sense for both teams."
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I don't think it is. It cripples our salary for the years beyond Reyes' contract. If you take out the rest of the pieces besides Reyes that we'd be giving up it gets a little better. Maybe include Renfroe too. We'd need other pieces, at least. Kemp is an awful player with tens of millions remaining, at least Reyes gives you SOME performance. For now but barely. He's only getting older, injury prone and playing on the turf. How long before he's a burden? Next year? Or in August when he inevitably goes down again?

Vernon was worth roughly replacement level over his last 3 years and cost 21 million a year. In summary, I'll pass.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Bautista Encarnacion and Such should be traded this year for young mlb ready controllable pitching. This and this alone is the way to Jays Salvation.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Bautista Encarnacion and Such should be traded this year for young mlb ready controllable pitching. This and this alone is the way to Jays Salvation. Both can veto trades, and neither would have a reason not to.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Bautista Encarnacion and Such should be traded this year for young mlb ready controllable pitching. This and this alone is the way to Jays Salvation. So basically, they should trade the best of what they have, at positions where they have nothing else, for what they already have in excess? That and that alone is the way to Jays salvation?

That and that alone is the way to Jays salvation? I don't necessarily agree with trading those two, but how in the world do the Jays have an "excess" of MLB ready young controllable SP?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Both can veto trades, and neither would have a reason not to. Wouldn't the reason be to escape the bloody abyss that is the Toronto Blue Jays to join a contending club and chase the dream of winning a World Series?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Lots of scouts eyeing our prospects http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/toronto-blue-jays-prospects-draw-interest-as-trade-deadline-nears-070915?vid=479488067562 Those starters include right-handers James Shields, Ian Kennedy, Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner. The Padres also could trade relievers Joaquin Benoit and Shawn Kelley, both of whom are in the final years of contracts, not to mention position players such as left fielder Justin Upton. Dodgers are also scouting us. gimme Kershaw pls
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 So realistically expect one or both of Hoffman and Norris to go

TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Honestly, if tomorrow AA packaged Reyes with Edwin to get rid of dat contract, and then dealt Bautista, Buehrle for prospect porn I would be very happy. We might make the playoffs with this team but have zero chance of winning a series with it.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 One starter is not going to save this team. It will be the difference between finishing 7 games out and 5 games out. Please no prospect trades
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 I'd give up an asset to get Shields + Upton, if San Diego eats some of the 2015 money. I doubt the Padres move Shields this year though, that would be bad business. Shields likes it in San Diego. I can't see SD moving Shields, Upton maybe but AA doesn't seem to interested in rentals.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 One starter is not going to save this team. It will be the difference between finishing 7 games out and 5 games out. Please no prospect trades They're only 2.5 games back now and have the best offense in baseball. I find it hard to believe that adding some pitchers would somehow make them worse.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 this guy's quoting rosenthal Well if they move either of those guys it will be for a very good player with control and a contract they can afford. I'd prefer to keep them both but for the right piece I'd move either or both of them.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 It would be hilarious if we traded real assets for Shields. Why? Shields has not stepped free agency in years, Amirite?

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Christ I wouldnt take shields for his contract alone now
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 We move Norris and we lose more of our female fanbase. We lost a chunk when Arencibia left. :_: Is Norris considered attractive? I find him goofy looking. If they want to attract the ladies they should bring in Matt Kemp
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 We move Norris and we lose more of our female fanbase. We lost a chunk when Arencibia left. :_: If my cellmate it goes, i will go with him.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 For now. Yankees pitching is far superior. They actually have good mlb starters Jays have scored 83 more runs than the NYY in 3 extra games. They do have better pitching but the Jays offense is far superior. And lets not forget that the Jays would be bringing in a pitcher to improve their staff. They don't need an ace they just need a couple more serviceable arms. Doubront/Norris/Sanchez probably fills the 5 spot and BP for the 2nd half. Bring in a guy like Ross, Shields, Hamels and this team should make the playoffs.
