TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 We just spent 6-8 mil on two minor league deals. That could have bought a decent reliever Sigh You call yourself a f***ing accountant. Sigh What's the connection between Hoffman and Boras? Thought I read somewhere that Boras was his agent. Apparently quick return of Saunders to #bluejays has no influence on Viciedo who's competing with Smoak and Barton for 1B/DH rather than OF AA hinting about Viciedo's LF defensive ability: "there are scenarios where maybe his best position is first base, DH" #bluejays This is great. Not because I care about Viciedo in the slightest, but because it tells us AA doesn't see him as an OF, and he's actually managing his "depth" well to this point.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I really hope Smoak pans out. It's hard to see them not getting at least something out of the group of Smoak/Valencia/Barton/Colabello/Viciedo.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I really hope Smoak pans out. I hope all this competition brings out the best in everyone. I'd love to see smoak, barton, sanchez, Norris, Santana, viciedo, dirks, pillar, travis etc all having good springs and management coming to the end of spring training going...great what do we do with all these guys now. Having to make tough decisions because you have so many players playing well is a lot preferable to the alternative.

Twisted, I think there's some merit in RA's point, which is AA must assume, even if both players start in the minors, that they may get called up during the year; ergo, he's gotta take into account their salary hit in the total budget.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I would have taken Axford over both the Santana and the viciedo signing

Santana's contract includes some incentives. I don't know how much, but I would guess it could put the two contracts in the 6 plus million range if both are on the roster. Though if that's the case, I hope its both are somehow contributing to a winning team.

Though if that's the case, I hope its both are somehow contributing to a winning team. Santana has $2.05MM in incentives and $2MM in roster bonuses. So, sure, 2.05 + 2 + 2 is in the 6-8 range (it is 6.05). But the Blue Jays haven't "just spent 6-8 mil on two minor league deals." The contracts are not guaranteed. Suggesting that minor league deals are hard on the budget is completely ridiculous. Signing Santana and Viciedo carries basically zero financial commitment.

Also, if Santana reaches his incentives he's probably a net positive to the team, so complaining about that cost seems remarkably dumb.

Been successful, to a certain extent. Bring him to camp, see what he is.”

Governator Community Moderator Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Some of you guys are just never happy, ffs. There is zero obligation to pay either player any money more than MiLB $. If we're in the position we were last year in July and 1 of our 5 starters go down (in most years they will), it sure would be nice to have the option of choosing a guy within the org who has had proven success in the past to hop in and close that gap without needing to ship out prospects in a trade for an overpaid player. The signing of Viciedo would likely be to platoon with Pillar for the inevitable time when Saunders stubs his toe and is out another 4-6 weeks. If you have to pay some $ to fill the gaps to continuing winning, I'm all f***ing for it. That's the cost of adding depth when your team doesn't have the prospects to fill the void.

Except he's going to earn $2.5m if he makes the roster at any point. Why would you pay $2.5m for a player that is worse than replacement, when a replacement player can cost only the MLB minimum?

LOL I'm not a huge fan but since we got him as insurance, didn't trade f*** all for him and he has MLB experience, I'll take him. AA says he was not brought in for OF more so for 1B/DH well I thought Gibby said EE was his 1B so that might be Gibby being overruled.

These guys will either make the team or be cut. They will not be kept around to provide MiLB depth. That being said some solid depth acquisitions who could potentially be kept in the minors have already been made this off-season such as Matt West, Ramon Santiago, Juan Oramas, Ezequiel Carrera, Daric Barton, Andy Dirks.

I guess your right, although I'd still call it a depth signing even if either make the club and are playing game #1. Santana to push Norris down for depth and Viciedo to be used in several situations, I assume likely until Saunders return though I'm not sure if he's a worthy bench option.

Thats the beauty of minor league deals is we get to see if they are in fact bench worthy or not.....For Free
raBBit Verified Member Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I think Valencia has more offensive upside (as a platoon bat). His raw power is actually insane. You should see him in BP. Definitely more than Viciedo. That's not true. Valencia is a much better bet and overall player but Viciedo's power is only behind Bautsista, EE and Donaldson. Viciedo's power is legit.
