TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Holy f*** lol. Was this basically just losing water weight after cutting down on salt, or did you notice fat loss too? I'm positive that there had to have been water weight in there, but there was visible fat loss. First family gathering I went to where it was probably two weeks into my diet, pretty much everyone noticed that I'd made some cuts. Makes you feel great too. Felt BSOML. I get kind of sluggish throughout the winter, so I got a bit lazier on my diet throughout those months and gained some of it back, but I'm really anxious to get started on it again, especially with some new stuff that I was too chicken s*** to try at the time (like this that seems to have unanimously good reviews but I just can't stomach the idea of having it just yet). I was trying to push myself to get into a diet for quite a while, but I really had to force myself into a mind set for it, and then once I got started, it's f***ing easy when you see 2 or 3 pounds dropping off every few days. Of course it's gonna eventually slow down, but when you start seeing those changes, it really does motivate you more. Plus, the food I was having was great. I love chicken and turkey and I don't drink, so the eventual adjustments weren't all that tough. Just basically treating yourself to a good meal every day without the bread and the garbage junk to follow it up.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Jesus christ, I should really cut carbs, shouldn't I? It blew my f***ing mind when I started noticing the kind of stuff that I regularly used to eat and how many calories each of those things have. A single bagel without anything in it can have anywhere from 250-400 calories, and I'd never feel full or satisfied without making two bagels for one meal. That's f***ing crazy. If you're on a diet where you're only taking in 1500 calories a day, then even if you're eating purely s***, you'll passively drop weight. But that isn't possible if you're using a third to two thirds of that quota on a couple of breakfast bagels. I told myself that I don't mind dropping a bagel, and then treating myself to an ice cream sandwich or something. Throughout that month I probably had an entire 24-quantity box of those no-name ice cream sandwiches you get at no-frills for like seven bucks, because they're only 130 calories a pop. You can easily fit that into a healthy 1500-2000 calories a day, so you're essentially doing yourself a favor by eating healthy, you're essentially getting a "cheat" snack every day, and you don't feel like you're constantly punishing yourself. If you can find trade-offs like that, than anyone can be on a meal plan like this, be perfectly happy, and really improve their health, appearance and conditioning.

Seeing the s*** people shove into their faces at work for breakfast/lunch is mindblowing. Muffins/egg sandwiches/bagels and cream cheese for breakfast and pasta/hamburger/fries for lunch. I'll never cut out carbs completely, especially with dinner, but for a few years now I've been fine with fruit for breakfast and either soup or a light sandwich with vegetables for lunch.

Doesn't drink soda because it's bad for you... has an ice cream sandwich every day.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Doesn't drink soda because it's bad for you... has an ice cream sandwich every day. Ice cream sandwich has probably half the sugar of a can of coke, fewer calories, no caffeine, and won't f*** with your teeth as much. Either way, a can of coke a day isn't going to hurt you if your diet is otherwise in check.

I'll never cut out carbs completely, especially with dinner, but for a few years now I've been fine with fruit for breakfast and either soup or a light sandwich with vegetables for lunch. I wouldn't recommend going permanently without carbs anyways. If you're someone that likes to get in some regular exercise, than you absolutely need carbs for energy, or you'll drain yourself 20 minutes into a jog. Of course, that's where you figure out what the good carbs are vs what the bad carbs are. I do recommend cutting out carbs in the initial sprint to cut weight though, because it really helps knock off the early bunch of weight, and that in turn helps people develop a very positive mentality towards something that they've probably been largely unmotivated for. Once you've gotten to a weight where you're comfortable where you are or don't mind taking it slow, it only takes a bit of research to figure out how to properly fit carbs into your diet so that you're always energetic but you're not piling back on the pounds. For those that are afraid of being constantly hungry, when I was on this diet, I probably felt less hunger than I've ever felt in maybe the 10 years prior to getting into it, because now I always had something to constantly munch on, whether it's stuff like carrots and bell peppers, a plate of fruit or maybe even a handful of almonds. Some people say that too much fruit can be bad for you, but I say f*** those people. I took in a s*** ton of fruit and it only made me feel better.

Both have same amount of calories. And the sugar doesn't really matter. If you wanted to take it a step further you could say Coke is pretty much just sugar, while ice cream sandwiches and other junk food has who knows what chemicals. Either isn't really good for you is my point. But if it's just calories that matter to you, either is fine.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Doesn't drink soda because it's bad for you... has an ice cream sandwich every day. I do drink soda, I just don't binge on it like I did once upon a time. If everything you're eating is essentially good for your health, and you're not taking in any other forms of bad sugars or useless carbs, then a regular sized ice cream sandwich (or something with similar nutrition values) won't really have any negative effects on you. Both have same amount of calories. And the sugar doesn't really matter. The calories are essentially the same, but a can of Coke has four times as much sugars in it than the sandwich.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 While we're on the topic of health and fitness, a few tools that I used: - For exercise, if you're going for pure weight loss, there probably isn't a better all-round machine than the elliptical. If you can keep yourself on it for even a third of a baseball game, or the duration of a movie, you won't notice any time go by, and it'll do you a world of benefit. The gym I was going to regularly had episodes of Archer or some s*** playing right above the ellipticals, so time flew by quickly. - HIIT workouts (high intensity interval training) are also excellent for strength and conditioning. They've really become popular lately and for good reason. - There's also a workout called DDP Yoga, which basically markets itself as geared more towards men. I have yet to try it, but a ton of people I've heard or read from have said it's great. Note: I don't recommend the "Insanity" workouts. A lot of people that I've talked to have said that it f***ed up their knees, and that's a no-no for me, because my knees are s*** as it is. As for motivation, two things I really liked: a) Video series on YouTube called "Fit2Fat2Fit" which chronicles a fitness instructor gaining a s*** ton of a weight and then losing it all back again over the course of six months (or was it a year?) to understand the pain of his clients and to prove to people that it's possible to do it eBook called "Man 2.0: Engineering the Alpha". I know, I know it sounds stupid, but it was a New York Times best seller and got a recommendation from Schwarzenegger. I really recommend at least picking this thing up and reading a chapter or two (and you can find it for free online).

Yeah, everything I've heard about DDP Yoga is a lot more positive than what I've heard about Insanity. The latter is physically impossible for most people to get comfortable with in the first place, and people who are actually pretty fit and have gotten into it have complained about wear and tear on their knees. If anyone is interested in experimenting with either, you can find torrents for both pretty easily. If you do wanna look at Insanity, find their Beachbody program.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Losing weight basically comes down to eating at a caloric deficit. Calories expended>calories consumed. Also, I would never recommend cutting out carbs completely. They're the body's primary source of energy (which is necessary if you're planning on doing any kind of aerobic exercise, resistance training, etc). Figure out your BMR - the amount of calories your body uses to maintain homeostatic state (there are free calculators online), track your food intake (lots of apps that use a QR Reader) and aim for a caloric deficit ~300-500. Much easier to achieve these numbers by increasing your BMR through exercise than drastically altering your diet.

I was drinking at least 4 a day plus whatever I had at home. On a bet with my Ex I gave it up for 6 months and lost 15 lbs. without changing anything else (a little less fast food as well). I was probably up to 5 coffees a day though. After the bet was over I went back to it but in moderation and have stayed that way ever since...but that first coke when I went back tasted better than any beer I've ever had. I drink at least 3 litres of water now every day, but i still have hydration issues.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 So I come home and read through this entire thread. It goes from the Belisario signing/to the Santiago signing to why Wilner is a moron. Then we go to drugs and why people who smoke weed are usually skinny/gay. Then it goes into other drugs including alcohol and coke, which then turns into a war against soft drinks and then finally we get into food habits. Yup, sounds like a BJMS thread alright.

When I was in high school I eliminated all soda from my diet, which was mostly diet sodas, and lost 20 pounds in two months. That was it, didn't change anything else. A friend of mine was on the Atkins diet with his parents around the same time and lost over 100 pounds but couldn't lose the final 10 that was his goal. He was like you Hurl, he would drink (diet) sodas out of boredom and it was okay on Atkins because they are all 0 calorie.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 I was going to wax poetic about Santiago but that 343 OBP he put up last year merely looks like a major outlier. He's still a good guy to have though. The best backup MI option if the Jays go with a straight starter/backup arrangement (with presumably Travis or Izturis as the starter) rather than go the platoon route with Kawasaki/Tolleson. The later seems increasingly unlikely given that the team would not doubt hopes that Travis takes over the 2B job at some point anyways and given that the team would probably prefer a guy with good defense and even splits as a backup to Reyes than a defensively limited platoon guy like Kawasaki. Kawa can always provide depth in the minors but this probably spells the end of Tolleson. He doesn't really work outside of the platoon arrangement. I was curious to get a look at Tolleson post eye surgery but you can't hold on to every scrub. At some point you have to make decisions based on who fits your team needs the best not just who has options.
