Spoonovic Verified Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 In a pitching era, Bautista had two monster years in 2010 and 2011. He followed them up with two very good years in 2012 and 2013. The numbers suggest he is having another monster season so far. Where does he rank among best Blue Jay hitters of all time? Is he going to end up on the Level of Excellence?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 1-Delgado 2-Bautista 3-McGriff 4-Olerud 5-Alomar 6-Bell 7-Edwin 8-Barfield 9-Molitor 10-Wells
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 A couple more healthy*** 125-130ish wrc years and he's number 1 for me.
Governator Community Moderator Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I don't think he'll end up on the level of excellence unless he somehow leads them to a WS in the next couple years. Lets see Roy Halladay make that list first before we saturate it. I don't know where he ranks. I think he needs a couple full healthy seasons to surpass even Delgado who gave us 12 years, 8 of which had 30+ HR seasons.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 A couple more healthy*** 125-130ish wrc years and he's number 1 for me. I think he needs a couple more 150ish years. I think he is the leader in terms of OPS+. The other stats probably work out about the same. I think he is behind Delgado in raw numbers ahead when adjusted for era. So a couple more great seasons and he's number one. A couple more so/so seasons with injuries and it will be hard to argue because he only had 2 healthy great seasons.
Spoonovic Verified Member Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 Career Blue Jay WAR: Delgado 34.6 Bautista 24.8 ZIPS has Jose ending up with 5.2 WAR in 2014. This would mean his career Blue Jay WAR would be 28.5. There is a good chance he passes Delgado’s career Jays WAR.
Bunchedundies Verified Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 He is up there with delgado, Bautista at his peak > delgado, but Delgado was better for longer so far. A few more good years he is the best ever IMO.

JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Are we talking during their tenure with the Jays or the best hitter to ever put on a Jays uniform? If we are talking about the latter then Id say Paul Moliter without question.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 1-Delgado 2-Bautista 3-McGriff 4-Olerud 5-Alomar 6-Bell 7-Edwin 8-Barfield 9-Molitor 10-Wells Nice list. I don't see Joe Carter, but you'd have to spend time going all the way down to 50th. Vernon probably should not be there if you are considering hitting only.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 cool does that make him the best jays hitter of all time? No no it does not. I would say it does.. unless you are really dinging Delgado for his defense.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 I'd say Joe Carter. He hit that big home run which won them the World Series in 93!
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 1-Delgado 2-Bautista 3-McGriff 4-Olerud 5-Alomar 6-Bell 7-Edwin 8-Barfield 9-Molitor 10-Wells Moseby ahead of Wells quite easily. Moseby had 6.9 WAR in 1984

Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 If he signs an extension and keeps up some level of consistency then he could well become No.1. As Governator suggests let's get Doc up there in the level of excellence and see how well we do on this run before annointing anyone else. 3 more years of JD's MVP level play could put him in the mix soon enough too.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I'd say Joe Carter. He hit that big home run which won them the World Series in 93! He gets dem RBIs
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 He'll be level of excellence if he retires tomorrow. He's "the guy" from this current era, plus he's been a better hitter than George Bell was and he's there. IMO Halladay and Bautista will join the level.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 This should settle things: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TOR/leaders_bat.shtml Offensive WAR Rank Player Offensive WAR PA 1. Carlos Delgado 39.1 6018 2. Jose Bautista 34.2 3957 3. Tony Fernandez 33.1 5900 4. Vernon Wells 30.0 5963 5. Roberto Alomar 25.1 3105 6. Lloyd Moseby 23.7 5799 7. George Bell 22.2 4883 8. Edwin Encarnacion 22.0 3399 9. John Olerud 19.5 3689 10. Fred McGriff 18.3 2322 Bautista has about two-thirds of the plate appearances as Delgado, so an argument could be made that he's already #1.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Only Delgado was maybe better IMO I wouldn't say Thomas, Canseco or Molitor were "Jays" for the sake of this discussion

Agree on all counts And Halladay will make the HOF as a Blue Jay. This makes me very happy.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Bautista has been one of the best, and I think this playoff run will cement him there. If this had been another year where the Jays were on the outside looking in, Bautista probably would have been looked at as a great hitter, but not one of the all-time greats. This run is going to place him in the upper echelon of all time.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Only Delgado was maybe better IMO Delgado played for the Jays for 11 years, so it really seems like he contributed more. I mean, he was astoundingly good. This is Bautista's 8th season with us (and really, wow... it hasn't felt like that long, has it?), so he's not had quite the same amount of time to make his mark. I think after this season, he'll be considered one of the best the Jays have ever had. I still don't think he's quite HOF material, but, maybe after a few post season runs... who knows?
Chappy Community Moderator Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 Bautista is the best without question imo. Delgado was good, but I don't recall him being as great of an offensive threat as Bautista.is great Delgado had some great years, but Bautista has had a bigger impact in a shorter time.
