DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 In regards to Lee, time would be better spent dreaming of winning the lottery and banging supermodels. No way he comes here. Jays are no doubt on his no-trade list. If he is on the fence on waiving the NTC I'd give our good friend Halladay a call to talk some sense in to him. Lee has said that if he is moved it will be to a contender, not sure if Lee views the Jays that way but, if you look past this season which is iffy-at-best it's hard not to view them in that light.
admin Site Manager Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Lee and Utley are a great fit but it's more a dream than anything. I don't think Lee will cost as much as some people think though. I can definitely see Peavy, since AA was trying to get him in the offseason. When AA has his mind set on someone, he usually gets him, over pay or not. So we can expect to give up a ton to get Peavy. If Gose wasn't absolutely terrible, I could see him being moved, and I'm sure it would be Sanchez or Osuna as well.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 That's actually a really big hurdle, and people are acting like its a non-issue. I imagine that there's no guarantee AA can get that kind of flexibility from Rogers. Not after what happened when they bumped payroll by ~$40 million a few months ago. If I'm not mistaken, a huge shared tv revenue stream kicks in, not to mention the untold millions Rogers is already raking in and pocketing. Don't be such a Debbie, there's probably much more money than we can even fathom. There will be plenty of time to cry about payroll constraints when and if they become real.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 When AA has his mind set on someone, he usually gets him, over pay or not. So true Rasmus, Escobar, Happ... The "ones that got away" are Justin Upton and Jake Peavy
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 People need to remember that our payroll will probably go up next year even if Johnson walks. Several guys have big jumps in their contracts next year (Buehrle, Dickey, and Reyes account for almost 20M all by themselves).

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 They became real last offseason - on several occasions AA talked about being at his limit. We know he has some flexibility at the deadline, for this season, but that doesn't mean he can take payroll to $150 million for 2014. Maybe he can. I'm just not comfortable assuming that a $30 million payroll bump is no biggie. I just think most of us hope Rogers didn't let AA spend right to the cap in one off-season. You can't build a contender in 4 months and they needed to save space to tinker and re-tool. I'm hoping this is the case but, it may not be.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Tidbits from MLBTR: - Scouts that have spoken with Martino expect the Phillies to be active sellers, but hold onto Cliff Lee since they want to contend next year. However, rival scouts and execs anticipate that, in addition to Michael Young and Chase Utley, Jonathan Papelbon will be dealt or at least heavily shopped. We've heard previously that the Phillies are expected to ask for an astronomical haul to part with Papelbon. Papelbon also fits the bill as someone who could be kept for next year, but rivals that have spoken with Martino see too much of a need for bullpen help amongst contenders like the Red Sox and Tigers and they expect GM Ruben Amaro to get a strong offer for the closer.
bzapple Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 So we're all just assuming payroll is jumping another $30 million to $150 million next season? I think most people just understand that this current team is f***ed if that doesn't happen, so for the sake of discussion we're making that assumption.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Full Derp to suggest the Red Sox try to re-acquire Pappelbon

If Rogers invest more money, will be with another GM, AA could be fired.
Nox Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 "Astronomical Haul" for Papelbon... Amaro realizes he can't trade with himself right?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 "Astronomical Haul" for Papelbon... Amaro realizes he can't trade with himself right? LOL Whoever is willing to give such a haul should be sent Casey Janssen for a "nearly" astronomical haul

Yup, its funny how many people think this team can't spend more money. It's not a matter if they can, its more a matter of how much more Rogers thinks they can make by spending more and based on the spike in attendance and solid TV ratings, I say Rogers is going to take this payroll to the next level.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Its going to go up $15 million (to ~$135) without Johnson. The additions talked about in this thread will require a $30+ million bump if no significant salary is being shipped out. And they still just replace Johnson. Adding Peavy and keeping JJ will cost $165 million - a $45 million jump. No one really knows what will happen, but I have a hard time believing AA made all these deals in the winter and no one took into account that the payroll would rise and likely still require a bump for additional needs. He talks about a 3 year window for contention and if that's the case then it would be absolutely ridiculous for him not to know that this teams payroll will need to be at least around $150M for 2014.

Me too And I honestly believe that the ROI of another 20-30M would actually be pretty good in a business sense.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Me too And I honestly believe that the ROI of another 20-30M would actually be pretty good in a business sense. I am in that same boat. I think people are underestimating how much money Rogers could be making with this team with all things considered. The fact that Rogers owns the team, stadium, networks that air the games and have a stranglehold on the telecommunications market, this team is a f***ing gold mine for them. I would be surprised if we don't see a payroll around the $150M mark for 2014. Heck I would be surprised if AA doesn't take on another big contract before the deadline.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 They added a new baseball post-game show and Jays Central is on TV now, business must be good... It absolutely is Business hasn't been this good since 1998 as far as this team is concerned They won't stop now In a few years if the team is past it's peak will they sell off and dump payroll by 50%? Quite possibly. For now I'm sure ownership is happy with what they see and are willing to invest more.

backontop Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Is it really necessary to aquire another SP with us probably being sellers in four weeks instead of buyers and Morrow coming back anytime now?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Is it really necessary to aquire another SP with us probably being sellers in four weeks instead of buyers and Morrow coming back anytime now? A) We're not clearly sellers Morrow not back any time now
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Go big or go home. Cliff Lee (with Utley in tow). Worst case scenario for the Blue Jays is to get cold feet right now, end up as an ~85 win team, miss the playoffs, and then still have a bleak long term picture. The long term picture is bleak no matter what they do at this point. Dare to dream but Lee has Toronto on his no trade list and current reports out of Philly suggest that Lee won't be traded. They are looking to contend next year and it's suggested that they will trade Utley, Young and Papelbon and then spend on free agents during the offseason. It's even been suggested that they will trade and resign Utley.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Peavy is a good fit, though Garza or Norris wouldn't be terrible options. All three of those pitchers come from teams that are interested in international free agent slot money.
backontop Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 GSNARLS says business hasn't been this good since 1998. But wasn't most of those tickets sold before April 2nd? And no matter where the Blue Jays go on the road, you see hundreds (if not thousands of fans) Surely they made these plans to watch Toronto in SF, SD and Tampa while proudly showing off their Blue Jays uniform tops as if to say, "hey! look at me I'm from Toronto (or Canada) home of MLBs # 1 team!........we thought
admin Site Manager Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Dare to dream but Lee has Toronto on his no trade list... I'm sure he would be more likely to waive it if we're contenders.

flafson Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I honestly don't know how we can make a trade, we have no prospects to trade, all we have is Bonifacio and maybe some of the rehab pitchers.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Lets just say they land Peavy. That would make the current rotation: Peavy, Dickey, Buehrle, Johnson & Rogers. Plug in Stroman/ Nolin in 4 weeks once Rogers is out of innings. That probably puts them 2 weeks (3-4 starts) away from Happ and possibly Morrow returning. Next year you qualify JJ and take the pick and have Peavy, Dickey, Buehrle, Morrow and one of Rogers, Happ, Hutchison, Stroman, Nolin, Drabek or Romero as the 5th man.
8D Verified Member Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I don't like Peavy. He's like another JJ; really good when he's on, but he's off at times and is too injury prone. Lee is awesome, but he's f***ing expensive. $25MM each year for the next two and he's getting old. Plus, we'd probably have to give up Sanchez or Osuna for Lee. Don't like these options... :/ If I had to choose, I'd go for Lee. Need someone you can rely on.
