We should tank now and get a bigger pool next year and do what the Cubs and Texas did this year. Their strategy should be done every 2 years and I think Tampa Bay was the first team to do it. It's actually a great strategy to replenish your farm system with international talent.

Indians near deal with RHP Leando Linares of Cuba

 

The Indians are closing in on a deal with Cuban teenage right-hander Leando Linares Gonzalez worth an estimated $1 million, according to an industry source.

 

Linares, 19, pitched for the Cuban National Team 16-and-under squad in competitions in Chinese Taipei in 2009 and Lagos de Moreno, Mexico in 2010. The 6-ft-3, 205-pound pitcher made a name for himself on the island by starring for Villa Clara in the 16-and-under and 18-and-under divisions in the National Championships in Cuba from 2009 to 2012.

 

Because he is not at least 23 years old and has not played at least three seasons in a Cuban professional league, Linares Gonzalez is subject to the new international signing guidelines established by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

 

The Indians have signed four players, including shortstop Willy Castro who signed for $850,000, for a total close to $1.4 million since the international signing period began on July 2nd. Cleveland entered the international signing period with a bonus pool of $3,636,900.

At 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Lizardo's mature build has drawn praise and some criticism from scouts.

 

Evaluators like his bat - he's been called one of the most "pure bats" on the market - and his power in batting practice and games. Scouts also like the switch-hitter's rhythm in the batter's box and approach at the plate, although there's a belief he's a better hitter from the left side.

 

On the other side of the ball, Lizardo has displayed good hands and a strong throwing arm in front of scouts in games and tryouts, making him one of the top defensive players in the Dominican Prospect League (DPL) this year. He is still working on his footwork and defensive actions, but his overall game is expected to improve with more instruction. In the end, it's Lizardo's athleticism and body type that sometimes come into question, but there is no denying that he's one of the top players available this year.

Nice and for only 250k. I really liked this kid. One of the youngest players in the class, and already a very good defensive third baseman with a projectable bat. Probably should only hit left handed though (he's a switch hitter) as his right handed swing is said to be not very good.

Are these kids standing 6 feet + really only 16 years old? Like srsly, as an exam, I can never grow to 6'4" (as Eloy Jimenez), never mind at that height at age of 16. It's just so unfathomable to think these minors with those kind physical build. Do dominicans have crazy tall genes or what?

As someone who is that age, Its pretty common for guys to be around 6 feet or 6+

Anything under 18 is still a kid. id say 5'10 is being generous... probably lower than that

It is definitely minority is all Im saying. If you want to compare written stats to the perception of height based on your evaluations then so be it. But 5'10 for a 15 and 16 year old is probably around average or like i said under avg

I will say I was one of the taller kids in my school at just over 6' around that age... but that being said... kids seem taller now since I was in school

To be fair a lot of kids in athletics are usually better built and usually taller for that matter, so maybe in sports 6' should be around average. I for one am 16 and 6'3 possibly 6'4.

I am 22. For fully grown adults the average is said to around 14% and I can guarantee it is alot lower among kids 15-16 who still have 3-4 years of growth atleast
