  1. You may have a fever dream where we land Sasaki, Santander and Bregman. Hopefully you don't wake up to the sole addition of Straw.
  2. This is madness, I never thought I'd be on the precipice of heartbreak so soon after the Ohtani debacle.
  3. Nice read Owen, but I didn't expect a bold prediction to outline our starting staff as an aging group of hurlers with tired arms and to basically ruin my day. With the Jays being the team exemplar of elite defense, I'd actually be surprised if we don't have a single starter under a 4.00 ERA, as that would be suggesting most of our starters hovering above a non-defense adjusted 4.30 ERA. Plus, Bowden Francis is going to be competing for the Cy Young this year according to my proprietary projection system that incorporates my blind optimism. Keep these articles coming, they're great.
  4. It makes a lot of sense. I was curious about Santander's splits and he's basically the same hitter vs RHB or LHP with a .003 difference in slugging (.772 OPS in 2020AB vs RHB; .786 OPS in 808AB vs LHB). Would be great to have him in the lineup and platoon around him like you've suggested in OF and DH. I think Loperfido will be on a short leash. If he doesn't start to perform early in the season, I think his ABs are going to disappear in a hurry. I notice no one has been talking about Davis Schneider, kinda sad to see how badly he fell off last year.
  5. Yup, a hope and a prayer, but it would be great to at least add an effective lefty to close things out. Most people were expecting a strong bullpen last spring training, and instead we witnessed a train wreck.
  6. Atkins must have told him that his team would be relentless in helping him, but not to an unnatural extent, and would definitely positively, but not negatively, impact his development. Then there was a long pause, before the translator made something up that impressed Sasaki.
  7. Where is Olerud?! Poor guy probably still trying to figure out how to log in to the new site.
  8. Sure, why not. Get er done.
  9. If we're going to be bold, predictions for our under the radar ace Bowden Francis should be coming up next. I was going to say Cy Young, but I'll settle for AS.
  10. That could be it, but I'm betting it's because no one will stretch up to his contract demands. Teo's contract didn't do him any favours.
  11. I’m with you, but then his agent will say one year at $25m …. with a player option for another two years at $20m per. So if Santander stinks, we are on the hook for say $65m and a comp pick, but if he’s good to great he bounces after one year. I hate those player opt out deals as there is generally too much risk on the team side if a player gets injured or underperforms, or both.
  12. Is that from the link the author posted above? Those are different projections from what I saw on the link, with three of those pitchers projected higher than what you've posted. Maybe I'm crazy, but the paywall won't let me check. I agree on the quantity piece, but there's also no dumpster fires in there. I also think Bowden is being under projected, but I'm an optimist. Does anyone know if the updated ZiPs projections take into account team defense? I don't recall that it does, and the Jays defense is so good, I calculated last year that it saves around ~0.3 off the Team ERA. If there's one thing we've got, it's defense.
  13. I thought I saw ZiPs at 13.2 WAR for Jays starters (same as Boston at 13.2, way better than the Orioles trash rotation and slightly behind the Yankees at 13.7 WAR) and 3.5ish WAR for relievers including Hoffman. To be fair, I was guessing that would put them in the top third rather than the bottom third, as not all the teams had updated ZiPs projections yet. Now, I can't access any of it now because I've reached my damn free article limit.
  14. Yeah, that's not even close to true re: pitching. The Jays current five starters are projected for a 13.2 WAR, which I would guess would put them at least in the top third of the AL. The bullpen is also starting to take shape with the Hoffman/Garcia signings and hopefully they add another arm soon. Could they use another depth starter and a decent lefty in the pen? Yes, but hardly "weak".
  15. At 38, he's no spring chicken that's for sure. .....
  16. I don't know... if they acquired Santander and Grichuk, the lineup would look like this with projected wRC+ from fangraphs: 1B - Vladdy: 155 2B - Giminez: 103 SS - Bichette: 118 3B - Clement: 103 RF - Springer: 110 CF - Varsho: 101 LF - Santander: 119 C - Kirk: 120 (am I seeing this right? quite the positive projection). DH - Wagner: 118; Grichuk 103 (I'd argue Grichuk's projection would be much, much higher if he's protected and platooned) That lineup doesn't make me cry, but I recognize it has a lot of possible variability and the potential to dramatically underperform.
  17. Father time is undefeated my friend. He eventually comes for everyone and JD is on borrowed time. I don't mind Grichuk - if you protect him and put him in the right platoon role against leftys.
  18. I bet they'll be able to find a league average or better batter (Will Wagner, etc.) for the league minimum, which is way better than dropping whatever it takes to sign JDM to his age 38 season. They need to be aiming higher.
  19. Sasaki may be a long shot, but we can dream. He'd instantaneously change my outlook for the team.
  20. Can't stop watching
  21. That's well put. Springer struggled last year, but I've always loved him as a player - he goes all out and he's always all smiles and support for teammates in the dugout. If he could just squeeze a 110 wRC+ out of his ancient bones (looks like this is actually the fangraphs projection), it'll make a world of difference for the lineup.
