  1. That's a fair counter point. However, the Jays still have $$ to spend. So rather than take a high risk bet on a guy who might make or break their season depending on his high variance outcomes, the obvious (and safe play) is to bring in a guy like Teo who has a much higher likelihood of materially contributing to the team. If Roden ends up catching fire, there will no doubt be injury opportunities (Springer?) and other ways to get his bat into the lineup and the team will still benefit. If Roden ends up being sub replacement level player his first year in the bigs, it won't materially impact the team's chances, and he obviously has options.
  2. I would love to see some data on reliability and the variance of outcome for minor league players projected to big league stats. At the very least, when you run those statistical models, Roden must have a much wider array of possible outcomes (both very positive and very negative) than someone like Teo who has a very established mlb track record. I believe in quant supported decisions, but there is no way in hell that I'm going with Roden over Teoscar when I absolutely need 2 WAR to eek into the playoffs. That's not saying we'll eek into the playoffs, but that's what Atkins is aiming for.
  3. Vladdy alone makes up -6 of the team's total -14 total and is 189th out of.... 189 qualified hitters. That's impressively bad baserunning!
  4. Not sure about the banging the wife clause, but agree that Atkins dropped the ball on Hernandez multiple times.
  5. Hell no. Baseball is crazy. Seven months ago there was an entire thread dedicated to sending Vladdy to Indy ball. I'm not going to name names, but many of those exact same people are now ranting and raving about how Atkins is "stoopid" for not signing Vlad earlier to an extension and want to give him the third biggest contract in MLB history. Vlad is clearly going to free agency and the Jays will move on. The only valid gripe I've heard around here recently is that Atkins should have traded Vlad at the deadline last year. I 100% agree with that take and was really hoping we were going to do a full tear down last year. It is what it is.
  6. Do it! The guy has a great eye and a good bat - the Jays could definitely use him in the lineup. Below average defense, but slot him next to Varsho in the outfield and I'll gladly take his +3 WAR contribution at the plate. Price tag isn't too bad either, especially for his age 30 and 31 seasons.
  7. Yeah, that might be the case. The problem is that the lineup canÂ’t afford yet another noodle bat pencilled in every third game. The guy is an offensive black hole. His walk-up song should be Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden.
  8. 1.5m? Sign that masturbator! It’ll be worth it just for the laughs over the next year or two. We might need them.
  9. lol, this man is blinded by his hatred of Atkins!
  10. I enjoyed watching Romano, especially in 2020-2021 when he was an under the radar break-out reliever. He had some real nice years with the Jays, he's a good ol' Canadian boy, and seems like a good guy who always came with a 'gimme the ball' attitude. But you're exactly right - he's a 32 year old reliever coming off a pretty serious elbow injury. I hope he does well this year, but I think we need to move on with our lives (especially that one guy here with the Romano jersey).
  11. Yup. They had a lot of things go right over the past couple of years with their available arms and last year Corbin Burnes held that rotation together. I wouldn't be excited about Suarez, Kremer and Wells. Bradish will probably be out till at least midseason. Orioles fans also seem to think Elfin is some sort of ace based on his 9 start run with the team, which is comedic. If they don't resign Burnes (they ain't resigning Burnes) or replace him with a front-end starter, I could see the wheels finally coming apart for their rotation.
  12. I know he's with a division rival, but I'm still pulling for Danny to put together a decent year over there.
  13. I know the A's are the A's, but it's really something that that contract is their largest guarantee in franchise history. And it's to Severino.
  14. These are exactly the figures bumping around in my head. For Soto to be worth $700M on the field in free agency $/WAR figures, he might have to put up 80-90+ WAR over the term of the contract. He'd have to be 8+ WAR consistently and I'm not making that bet. We all know how great a player he is, but at some point those dollars are better spent elsewhere. I also don't think there is some sort of magical unicorn dollars that Rogers will have for Soto that don't impact the rest of the Jays budget for 10+ years. I think what the owners are communicating is "go for it" if there is a very special player, a huge marketing opportunity, and a chance to put together a contender. $700M for Ohtani, OK, but Soto? ehhh. That said, I'd be willing to run around the block naked if we sign him.
  15. Totally agree, these are ridiculous numbers.
  16. And how did he get Spencer Horwitz wrapped in all that nonsense? Spencer just be minding his own business trying to hit baseballs.
  17. Yup. The difference between 37 and 42 is a big deal in MMA, especially if they've taken some big KOs. It's been over a decade since a fighter over 37 won a title (Anderson Silva at 38). The only other fighter in history to win a title over the age of 37 was Randy Couture and that was in a completely different era. Being over 40 in MMA and still being successful is even harder than staying in the game in MLB at that age (you're adding in a s***-ton of lifelong injuries and accumulation of damage)
  18. Hahaha, yeah pretty much. Hope old-man Stipe wins, but pretty sure Jones will take it.
  19. Yup, there should be shared risk for both parties on a long term deal. Unfortunately, I suspect Guerrero's camp think he's a proven, highly marketable, elite superstar with little to no risk given his age and most recent season. It's a real tough spot for a relatively conservative front office like the Jays. You're rolling the dice whether you resign him at crazy dollars or if you move him for a prospect package.
  20. You're totally right re: Vladdy, but the front office is intent on 'extending the window' and trying to compete next year. Bo would be cents on the dollar after the atrocious showing last year - might as well let him play this season.
  21. He must be reading this forum.
  22. "You have to have plan A, plan B, plan C, plan D, plan E and plan F,” said Angels GM Perry Minasian. “It's part of the job, right? You better have multiple options. If you're banking on one thing happening, it doesn't always happen like you want it to. So you better have more than one." If that was his Plan A, just imagine Plan F.
