  1. This team can't even tank properly. JPA getting under the Mendoza line is the only thing I have to look forward to.
  2. Negative value from 2B guys that the org "saw something in"; Boni being the must-have guy in the Marlins deal, and Izturis getting a three year deal.
  3. Unless he's handled his money really poorly or been told his injury troubles are pretty serious, I think he'll probably have his sights on what it takes to try and cash in on a big deal. There was talk early in the season (perhaps by his agent?) about JJ setting a record for a free agent deal. My guess is that he'd like to prove to people that this season was more the exception than the rule of what they can expect from him moving forward.
  4. If Johnson was going to settle for a low value one-year deal (as opposed to the QO), I'm not sure there's much incentive for him to pick Toronto for that. Sacrificing a couple of million dollars on a one-year deal is pretty insignificant to having a turnaround year in a place like San Diego, and then cashing in on a multi-year deal.
  5. In a better context, it may not have necessarily been a terrible trade...i.e., if this team had been knocking on the door for a couple of years and needed a David Cone-type deal to push them over the top, then the deal makes a lot more sense because you would: - be adding to a team that had already shown periods of consistent success - assume the team had an existing catching option (offensively, defensively or both) that made d'Arnaud more expendable Instead, this team tried to force a bad team into being a veteran, contending team without really know who would play well and who would struggle. The impact of losing d'Arnaud is magnified because you're left with the incompetency that is JPA.
  6. From the clip I saw, he looked like a statue there...no feet movement, no arm movement... #UmpShow
  7. That was pretty much last offseason. #LoViste
  8. And not entirely for what we gave up (i.e., d'Arnaud), but what we were left with (JPA).
  9. The result that is Delabar is a lot better than the process that yielded him. I think if your process is good, more often than not you will end up with good results. To me this team is flying by the seat of their pants with no repeatability to how they do business. Just a baffling couple of years that could have worked out better had they been a bit healthier and received more contribution from their track record guys. That said, if your process is going to target guys that have had history of injury and inconsistency, you can't be too surprised when it doesn't work out.
  10. I feel like the Marlins deal was risky, the Dickey deal was reckless, and both moves were ill-timed. If you have to replace 4/5 of your rotation to be "all-in", maybe you shouldn't be "all-in". To be fair though, I was excited coming into this season, but that was under the assumption that all of Dickey, Johnson, Boni, Izturis, Cabrera wouldn't be terrible.
  11. He's done nothing to lose the job. The key for him is to start the last game if the season. #SquattersRights
  12. Unfortunately, this is not really true. Rasmus being solid all season, a productive season from Lind, good years from Bautista and EE, a very good bullpen for most of the year. A lot has gone wrong to be sure, but it could have been worse, sadly. I still don't thing Gibbons should be fired though. It would be pretty sad if he lost his job but Beeston and AA got to keep theirs.
  13. This part is not good. JPA at 20 dingers now. AA's auto-extension bell in his head just went off.
  14. This organization is so messed up. If the team is truly "all-in", it needs to have a solid bench with guys like Davis that can actually do something useful; in Davis' case, play reasonable defense, steal some bases, and sometimes play against LHP. I can definitely appreciate scenarios where I'd rather have Gose/Pillar fill a role over Davis, but if the goal is to contend next season, I don't know if either have shown enough to count on for next season. What's the point of gutting the system if you're going to punt roughly a quarter of the roster (C, 2B, bench)?
  15. Just as the JPA extension is winding down.
  16. I really like Brisbee; he writes a lot of good stuff.
  17. This only works if we stop drafting the McGuires and Jenkins of the world. #FatChance
  18. The record analysis with/without the Yankees results would be dumb enough if they were facing the great teams of the late 90s. Doing it for a team that is as old and broken down as the Jays are is even dumber.
  19. It's been said many times before, but how do you go "all-in" and have JPA as your catcher? Trading away d'Arnaud if you already have an established McCann-ish type guy would be one thing, but...ugh.
  20. We should send some old guys over to take a look.
  21. Pitch that bounces in front of plate: JP Arencibia
  22. The more important part is the understanding that they need to upgrade at catcher.
  23. This reminds me of the time when they handed Thames the starting LF job, not because he earned it, but because he hadn't done anything to lose it. I'm pretty certain we're going to extend DeRosa.
  24. Esmil is probably hitting the wall a bit. Bit of a tough scenario trying to identify if his more recent struggles are due to fatigue-ish reasons, or if the league is figuring him out. I wonder if he's going to be the next phantom injury in order to shut him down.
  25. Winning brings out fans. This team should make moves to make the team better so that it wins more, regardless if those moves mean that fan favourites are dealt.
