    Definitely this year. I didn't like having to give up d'Arnaud + Synder, but I could tolerate it to get an ace pitcher in the name of winning now. I didn't like taking on all that salary in the Marlins deal, but I could tolerate it to rebuild the rotation + Reyes in the name of winning now. The problem is that we've mortgaged our long-term sustainability, and don't have any of the short-term success that we're supposed to have. Playoffs aside, I was just looking forward to the excitement of being in the race into September, but we've been in a hole since pretty much Day 1. One one hand, it seems like this organization might still be in decent shape with guys like Hutchison coming back soon and a few nice pieces in the minors, but the problem with that is that we still have the same management team and organizational philosophy overseeing everything.

    Did you see the Phanatic snag that ceremonial pitch from Lou Ferrigno? Even he's got better form than JPA.

    I don't think anybody is hoping that he gets injured, just hoping that he's currently more injured than he's letting on, and that his poor performance is tied to a nagging injury rather than him jumping off the aging cliff.

    I feel like Buck treated himself to an extra G+T tonight.

    It was never a great deal from an asset management perspective, but I don't think anybody could have predicted he would perform this badly. Part of me is going to go mental if his performance is being affected by an injury that he is unwisely trying to pitch through. Another part of me would be relieved if there was something tangible we could attribute to his suckage.

    I dunno, I feel like JPA is the worst kind of dumb. I find it plausible that Davis and Lind are aware of the limitations to their smartness, whereas JPA legitimately thinks he has this game figured out. I'll take the 'aw shucks' buffoon over the soapbox imbecile every time.

    How valuable is the modern day big bullpen if you only end up hamstringing yourself in other aspects of the game? Obviously the Jays are currently in an extreme situation with available pitchers, but in general, I wonder what the net usefulness is of being able to play matchups in the pen, only to limit yourself with pinch hitting/defensive substitutions because you're worried about running out of players.

    If these guys keep it up, AA may be able to package them for a true veteran reliever. Imagine the stories Heath Bell could tell.

    I'm not trying to claim that AA is honest or not, just not sold on your statement that JPR was "very honest".

    He was? The "it's not a lie if we know the truth" guy? He sure talked a lot, but that's different than being honest.

    I think having specialized roles has also made a difference: closer, setup man, LOOGY, etc. It seems like bullpen guys are more geared to pitch a single inning or less these days. On one hand, it seems like playing to matchups with your bullpen is an advantage, but I wonder how much difference it really makes when you think of the reduced flexibility that a shorter bench allows both in terms of being able to PH for someone, and in bringing guys in for defence.
