  1. Yeah, I don't get this; unless there's an unreported reason for why Alford can't go tonight.
  2. Yeah, I get that. I'm hopeful for Alford to get consistent ABs, as in the past it's been quite frustrating.
  3. Morales being able to play a passable 1B would be very nice. With the above lineup, I'd probably also move Russ down below Pearce.
  4. Was this from his slide? Must be a maddening way to get a concussion. How many times has he slid into second in his life?
  5. Might have to give my mother-in-law a call.
  6. Yes, I'll have to look at other options as well. Just glad I didn't sink the money already.
  7. I'm really glad I cancelled in February and took a wait-and-see approach. As much as I like baseball in general, MLB.TV just isn't worth it to me if I can't watch Jays live on it.
  8. Yes, this doesn't make much sense from a speeding up the game perspective. I haven't read this whole thread, but it seems to me like enforcing the rules with respect to time between pitches and guys leaving the batter's box would be more effective.
  9. Still, if you're going to misjudge a market, this is the way to do it.
  10. Do you really need the anthem as a reminder of this though? Like, you forget how lucky you are until you hear the anthem? Loving and appreciating your country is completely awesome, and I've witnessed some amazing anthem moments at international competitions. Before every baseball game seems overkill to me. Why not every day at the beginning of work? Why not every night before going to bed? Why not before every meal? I think there's a point where the anthem is overdone, and almost becomes a distraction from a true appreciation of the country one lives in. IMO.
  11. Man, they even woke up Buck for this.
  12. Tabby hogging the chat.
  13. Got there just in time to see them switch over to an update about a hockey team firing their coach.
  14. He's not a fit in general, IMO. He's *really* not a fit with Gibbons managing.
  15. I think a 1-year deal still makes sense if Bautista helps this team win/compete/contend for 2017. Having an extra pick would be really nice, but there are still enough pieces here to make a run in 2017. I am not in favour of a recklessly trying to improve this team for 2017 for the sake of appearances, but I don't think the team should outright dismiss a 1-year deal just because of the pick. If we need that pick so badly, we should probably just blow the whole thing up. That said, entertaining a 1-year deal for Bautista is contingent on the idea that he is healthy and able to bounce back. It continues to seem that the FO does not believe this to be the case, or there's some other negative factor about him that outweighs whatever value he brings to the field.
  16. I won't consider this feud legit until one of them changes their jersey number.
  17. I feel like this is an idea that works much better in theory rather than practice. What benefits you might gain in positional advantage, you may lose through the overall performance drop from the player who is the more defensively deficient of the two. You'd have to be a robot not to be negatively affected by constantly being reminded through the game via shifting that you're lousy defensively.
  18. Not really, as I don't think there's a generic "top defender" label that can be applied across all players as the skillset varies so greatly position-to-position. I think the key is to put your best guys in the positions that suit their abilities. You could put a pylon at first base and do well, as long as the pylon can pick balls in the dirt.
  19. I think one of the benefits of the Jays' payroll capacity is that they don't *necessarily* have to lock up guys. While there are certainly exceptions to every rule, I'm fine if they take the majority of guys year-by-year through arbitration years and then make more informed decisions at that point. Sure, you may have to pay more for some of the guys that age well, but at least you'd be paying for something you still want; and at the same time eliminate a lot of the sunk costs for guys that don't pan out/blow out their arm/etc.
  20. I'm leaning towards the idea of signing Bautista for a year and giving Pompey a chance. I feel like Bautista is at his best when he's got a chip on his shoulder. If he's healthy I could see him having a good season. I'm really hoping Pompey and Travis can take big steps forward in terms of results and durability respectively, so as to help assess how to address needs moving forward.
  21. Has Shapiro stated that he's done? The payroll isn't going unused; it just hasn't been used yet. I don't think Shapiro deserves scorn until we see the roster going into the season.
  22. Back in the Gord Ash days, Ash always seemed to talk about re-tooling versus re-building. It never made sense back then because the Ash teams *should* have been rebuilding around the Greens/Delgados and the like. In this case though, I think re-tooling is a fine description for what Shapiro should be trying to do. He has a fair amount of talent on this squad in general, a solid rotation, and is a piece or two away from having a solid bullpen. I think re-signing Edwin/Bautista would have been fine had the core of this team been younger. With Donaldson, Tulo, Martin, Happ, Estrada (and Edwin/Bautista) all being on the wrong side of 30, I don't really mind the course they've taken.
