Track Record: Southisene comes from a baseball family. His twin brother way is a two-way player at Southern California, younger brother Tate was a first-round pick of the Braves in 2025 and another younger brother, Troy, is a 2026 shortstop committed to Oregon State. Ty was drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round in 2024 and made his debut in the Arizona Complex League in 2025. The Cubs promoted him to Low-A Myrtle Beach after one game in the ACL.

 

Scouting Report: Southisene is a hit-over-power middle infielder with plus speed and baserunning abilities. At the plate, his game is predicated on working deep counts, getting on base and putting hittable pitches in play. His approach is fairly passive. Southisene rarely chases but runs a very low swing rate. He has a poor power profile, with downward launch angles that led to a nearly 60% groundball rate in 2025. Baserunning is the strongest part of his game, and alongside his contact skills, it’s his carrying tool. Southisene saw nearly all of his time in the field at second base in 2025 and should be average there. He has a below-average arm, so he likely won’t see much time going forward on the left side of the diamond.

 

The Future: Southisene looks like a bench bat with speed who could be used situationally.

Stat scout trade to the max. Zone control and hit tool dwarfs.

Bateman is MLB CF depth though. Maybe replaces Varsho in two days.

Yes but Gausman seems to actually be considering retiring, and if he doesn't he's a sign back candidate anyway. 

Return is horrible unless one of these guys is a surprisingly good defender yuck

I'm almost positive Gausman was given a QO already in his career, so I don't think the Jays could have offered him one.

With that said, on paper this looks awful. I would have bet the Jays could have gotten Alcantara, but either the Cubs plan to keep him for next season, or the Jays wanted to make sure whoever they got back would never hit a home run even by accident.

You're right. He accepted one from the Giants before the 2021 season. That lessens the sting of this a bit

Yeah even if the QO is off the table because Gausman got one earlier in his career, this is worse than simply keeping Gausman for the rest of the year and trying to win.

Bateman played with Cubs manager Craig Counsell's son Brady at Minnesota, where he developed into one of the best contact hitters, fastest runners and top defenders in the 2023 college crop. But his utter lack of power affected his Draft stock, even after he batted .500 during a two-week stint in the Cape Cod League, and he dropped to Chicago in the eighth round. He overcame surgery on his right hamate last February to hit .261/.376/.307 at Double-A, ranking third in walk rate (15 percent) and sixth in on-base percentage.

A left-handed hitter, Bateman rarely strays from the strike zone, rarely hits balls with authority and rarely lifts them in the air. He lacks strength and understands his limitations, so he focuses on reaching base by drilling grounders through holes in the defense and working walks. His approach comes at the expense of any power, and he's a career .315 slugger with three homers in 233 pro games.

Bateman's game is built around his plus-plus speed, which he uses to beat out hits, steal bases and chase down balls from gap to gap in center field. A two-way player until he had elbow surgery following his freshman year with the Gophers, he has solid arm strength and has notched 22 assists in 223 starts in center. He has drawn comparisons to Orioles 2023 first-rounder Enrique Bradfield Jr. and Myles Straw.

A contact-driven offensive profile and a strong glove doesn’t make for the sexiest profile but Bateman continues to inch his way towards big-league at-bats. His outfield defense is the carrying tool. While he can be plugged into any spot in the grass, center field is where Bateman shines, showing a quick first step, excellent instincts, and an arm that is strong enough to keep runners from taking the extra base. Offensively, he’s a disciplined hitter who pairs above-average swing decisions with a high-contact approach, allowing him to get on base at a solid clip. Over-the-fence power is not part of his game but Bateman did get the ball in the air slightly more in 2025 and has the speed to rack up double should the trend continue. Odds are Bateman eventually settles into a Quad-A role down the line but there is a scenario where he meets his 90th percentile outcome and carves out a role as an everyday center fielder.

Batemen had a hamate bone injury and slugged .307 last year.

This year he's slugging .420.  Hitting .310 .430 .420 in aaa.
