As for another bat, IIRC most of the same people were saying the same thing last year. Then the Jays finally signed Taters and he gave us absolutely nothing offensively, yet the Jays managed to be the 4th best offensive team in baseball anyways. 

Of course it's possible that everybody regresses and we suck, but it's also possible that Barger gives us a 4+ fWAR season out in right field while smashing 35+ dingers. Maybe Taters hits 35+ too. Nobody will be saying our top 4-5 hitters isn't good enough then.

My concern is if Berg doesn’t take the next step or Santander does not rebound, Vladdy is not gonna see any pitches to hit this year

you still don’t have a proper two hole hitter.

Saying that, on any given year players can take the next step or regress. It’s now on the players to bring their “A” game and fight for those spots.  
 

we have solid pitching and solid defense, which will keep us in any game. There’s no use bringing in a hitter unless it’s a clear upgrade and that hitter fills a proper defensive position.

 

The only one I see in free agency that does that is Bellinger, and I’m 90% sure he goes to the Yankees

Last year the kids did well and called upon, we have a few diamonds in the roof, given them a few months to start this season to see what we have may not be a bad idea. Two months into the season if there’s a need for a trade, we can address it then.
 

Still a month left in the off-season. it’s only been days since the front office got turned down by the top two players. Let’s see what they have in their back pocket as I’ve learned there’s always surprises with them.

People’s opinions 

A lot of people are making good points and explaining how they feel and there is a lot of differing view points. Some think Barger and co are a top 5 offense still, others are skeptical 

I prefer a board that has people active and posting, as opposed to 12 guys just gargling $/WAR calculations from steamer projections

You gotta relax. Everybody’s entitled to their own opinions. Not everybody has to bow down to God Spanky’s thoughts. 
 

This team just like any other team has perceived holes and some legitimate concerns if we are now saying we’re going for the World Series.

I actually like when people have different takes on things. It may not be my take, but almost there they take gives me something to think about, even if some of them are just chuckles

As a fan base were so far ahead positively, then we were a years ago that is my biggest take.  
 

A year ago, it was all *****ing, people mad at management, etc. This year I’m seeing people that are excited, getting lost in the moment, and just wanting this positivity to keep going. It’s contagious.

Sit back, take a breath, enjoy where we’re at, I don’t think you know more than anyone else. It’s quite possible you do, just don’t be dick about it. 

if you have managed an MLB team to a Workd Series I take this back, otherwise your take is as valuable or not valuable as the rest of us.

Now, if you wanna come at me personally,, you can,  I don’t give two shits. I have a lot going on in my personal life. I don’t have the time I usually do to check on advanced stats , etc..

 

my main concern is Vladdy maybe on an island offensively at first glance. That could change as the season plays out if Barger takes the next step, Santander rebounds, Okamoto is what he is expected to be, Springer keeps going, Varsho stays healthy, This all could happen and we will be an offensive force,  it’s just as easy to say things could go the other way. 

I also think our lack to address a proper closer has bit us for years   
 

however still a month away to ST   

I love our starting pitching, I love our defense.  I love our lovable cast of characters.

It's hard to shake the PTSD from the 74 win 2024, but I'm excited.

I think this is the best Jays team I've seen on paper in a long time. 

Maybe one of the best rotations they've ever put together, at least in the last 30 years.

Bullpen is super deep. Defense is elite. And I think Popkins can squeeze even more offense out of a lot of these players. Just loaded from top to bottom with pains in the asses who are tough to strike out.

Uhmm... you might need to relax here, I'm sorry to hear about your dad, mine just died this past April, I wish you guys well through the surgery procedure. That gif was my opinion on the matter with humour, this situation isn't dire, far from it nor is the offseason, Cheers!

totally agree.  Not a dire situation at all.  I am almost excited to see what the new guys look like.   If some of those diamonds in the rough pan out it could be exciting.

So what's next?  I don't see any free agent outfielders that are worth having outside of Bellinger.  Do we have to just hope Santander can play a little?

We have all the same outfielders as last year. Plus Varsho isn't supposed to miss the first few months of the season.

Taters gets a do-over and who knows what Schreck will turn into. This time last year nobody was thinking we were about to get a 2+ WAR season from Barger.

I don't think I could look at that man for 2 years with his soccer mom hair cut, earrings and traced on beard. But also, we have Okamoto, Clement, Schneider, Vladdy, Barger who can all play 3B so he would be a bit redundant. At this point it's Outfielder or bust imo. Major hole there, possibly two major holes there, after this season.

We drive the price up for Bellinger that screws the Yankees from signing free agents in the future.

Maybe we get lucky and get Bellinger but if not then lets hope we can work some magic to get a Donaldson/Chapman like acquisition.

Agreed.  I really want another bat in the top 4 but there is no major hole on the team except closer.

SS and LF are the worst positions by league relative projections.

I will ignore the CF projection of Varsho's defense because it makes no sense. 

Bellinger is a notable roster upgrade I just can't get comfortable with the idea of him and long term money

Given what Bo got, he's probably going to get like 5/200. Teams are getting pretty spendy now

A trade for a controllable OF is probably a reasonable next move if one is coming on the position player side. They can figure out the roster crunch later. Stay away from Bellinger given the price tag he wants. I joked about it at last year's deadline and heading into the off-season, but Kwan's offensive profile is what Atkins dreams about at night, so I'm going to assume they'll at least pursue that, especially given the history of trading with the Guardians. Not sure who else is out there that makes sense. Maybe Atkins has a surprise up his sleeve.

Position/role, its implied by what a closer means just like it would be if people said "leadoff/cleanup hitter" or "ace of the staff"

Not having a true closer aka the guy who pitches the 9th inning of games is a massive hole.  No need to argue semantics lol.

Pains me to say it that Allen had 2 bad passes at the end of the 4th and in OT that would have ended the game.  

Theyre obviously not in that spot without him but the greats are held to different standards.
