Laika Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2025 Posted October 28, 2025 Inexplicable and unforgiveable and annoyingly incongruent to pitch to Ohtani with Seranthony while up 5-4 and then just walk him every other time. Like, what was the plan? lol. I guess they thought Dominguez had the stuff to get him out but they did not have that faith in every subsequent pitcher? I don't mind most of the other position player substitutions - you never manage a game expecting it to never end - but the Straw for Barger one was too cute and too much. Toronto only had a 57% win probability after Barger reached on that error, so it was insane to remove one of your best hitters in a tie game. And he's not a bad runner! Different situation if it was someone very slow on the bases. Also, Straw is not a game changing base stealer. I think you can also criticize Kirk getting subbed out because it felt like the game might get silly right then and that substitution really made the lineup putrid, but in that moment I did understand the thought and it paid off mildly since Heineman running the bases kept the inning alive. Also, you have a fat guy going into the 13th inning as a catcher so attrition and fatigue are relevant considerations. Heineman did work a walk (well, rightfully he did) in his final PA before the whiff and he did hit a ball well to CF (94 mph) in his first PA so it's not like he had brutal PAs. Nathan Lukes swung at ball 4 three times against Kershaw, and it would have been a run. But how can you blame him when the ump was calling the game as he was? There probably is no silver lining since Springer is dead and both bullpens are wrecked now, but I guess if you want to grasp at straws, Ohtani just played two games in one night and now has to pitch today. Maybe he will suck? That's all I have. I want to die bronson44, Stangstag, Gen.Disarray and 1 other 3 1
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2025 Posted October 28, 2025 Okay, second silver lining. This team has a different kind of energy when they are behind. They fell behind Seattle 2-0 and turned into a different team. They just lost a crippling game. Most lesser teams would fold. This is the ultimate test of the 2025 Toronto Blue Jays. Maybe this is the ultimate motivation. ComeTogether, Pinkfloid and Gen.Disarray 3

You know he is going to try to play, but if they don't sub him off the roster this afternoon you have to think he is good for the Toronto games. From how he was walking, the dude has a serious oblique strain. I am guessing they will just take the full day to do tests and stuff. Maybe they keep him on the roster just out of some remote hope that he can pinch hit in a game 6 or 7? It's not like replacing him with Loperfido does the Jays much good. Stangstag 1

At this point, if they can extend the series to Toronto, I consider that a win. Maybe some players will have enough time to heal up enough to play. Pinkfloid 1
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2025 Posted October 28, 2025 Bo hitting directly behind Vlad is indeed very stupid if you are going to sub him out for IKF every game. Should be 5th, maybe leadoff now actually if Springer is dead (Springer is dead) Stangstag 1

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 28, 2025 Posted October 28, 2025 Wegner actually wasn't bad at all, especially for an 18-inning game
harvey16 Verified Member Posted October 28, 2025 Posted October 28, 2025 Hypothetical question. Had the Jays sustained another injury after they completely exhausted their entire 26 man roster, would they have had to forfeit the game if the player couldn't continue or would they be allowed to play a man down in the field and take an automatic out when it would be their turn to bat?

Jays try to sign Ohtani... think they have him... no Dodgers. Jays try to sign Sasaki and get cute with international money thing end up with Straw. No Sasaki. Jays still somehow on top of World on October 24th. Chant 'We don't need you'. to Ohtani Maybe they did need him. Sasaki vs Straw dream matchup but goes Sasaki's way. Logically I think Ohtani will be tired as hell tonight, 11-4 Jays. 'World has a sense humor' part of me thinks 6-1 Dodgers with Ohtani going 7 and Jays fans exposed to Ohtani love fest.

When you pull him out after 3 PA for Falefa that leave Vladdy without protection It may not matter now if Springer has to miss time (I’m assuming Bo will DH and bat lead off in that scenario) but completely agree. If Bo is playing 2B and is going to be taken out mid/late for IKF. then he needs to bat somewhere else in the lineup.

mphenhef Verified Member Posted October 28, 2025 Posted October 28, 2025 I was getting ready to defend the Straw pinch running decision as playing to who they are with late inning defensive replacements when they are winning and the spot likely won't come up again. But then I realized it was in the 8th in a tie game. I can't get behind that.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2025 Posted October 28, 2025 The Ohtani homer right after Pete Walker's mound visit kind of stings, that and replacing Barger Baseball players gotta have short memories....onto game 4.

Sometimes there is dark humor in how things work out. People don't have to take every post so seriously. This is where everyone should follow Grant's example. For like almost 20 years I think he answers almost every post with his own thoughts, instead of criticizing others. Rarely does Grant insult me when I call him a cherry picking moron, instead he usually just bring up counter-points as to why Seattle is so bad. How I really feel is that logically Ohtani should be tired so can't see him dominating tonight. I felt that way after game 4 of the 2016 ALCS too. Different scenario but I think they had an unknown lefty pitching game 5, and I thought obviously Jays could lose, but they aren't going to lose with the unknown going 4 scoreless and Miller going 2 scoreless again. That is what happened every game of the series but it just is not going to happen again. But it did. Ohtani is tired. Jays could lose. They could lose 9-6 in a tired bullpen battle. They could win 11-4. But realistically it's just not going to be another Ohtani love-fest with him being super-human coming back after the 18 inning game.... but the world has a dark sense of humor part of me thinks it will be that.

Barger up at that plate in that situation would have been better than Straw. Jays completely gutted their lineup for extra innings. Was painful watching some of these guys get multiple AB's in extras. Obviously the Springer injury and if Kirk was injured afterwards, it's understandable. Barger was on 1B?

You sound like a broken record. There are a bunch of reasons why they lost that game that have nothing to do with JS. Bo picked off 1st on a nothing play. IKF thrown out at 3rd. Schneider sent home as a dead duck. Dodgers (and Jays) pitchers stood on their head. Dodgers made a bunch of great plays. Jays couldn't scratch across a run for how many innings? Dominguez was clearly told to try to get Ohtani to chase outside the zone, instead he throws one middle-middle. It goes on and on. JS can't pitch, hit or field. When it comes down to it, the players need to get it done. These are all major league players at the end of the day.

That combined with the chants "We don't need you" just has the weird 'we insulted their honor' vibe, though Ohtani said it was a great chant. Ohtani - "That was great chant. However now we kill you. We respect your chant. A clever chant, but we still have to kill you."

We need offense and we should take whatever downgrade Schneider is at second or in the corner outfield. I sometimes feel like giving managers crafty veterans like straw, ikf and france can be a mistake because most managers were themselves crafty vets. They over value that type. Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 28, 2025 Posted October 28, 2025 Don't kid yourself folks, Ohtani won't be fatigued in the least. First of all the guy is physical specimen. He could probably participate in a marathon today and still play the game tonight. Secondly half of the game last night consisted of him walking to the batters box and then being walked to first base. Don't pin your hopes on this type of stuff. Sorry to say.
