I'm sure this gives the BoSox boat loads of added flexibility, but maybe they'll find flexibility isn't more valuable than their best hitter

Yeah I don't think Devers' contract is that bad.

He signed it pre-Ohtani/Soto/Vlad.

8 years and 232 million left after this year. 29 mil AAV for his age 29-36 seasons.

I guess things weren’t getting better behind the scenes. Considering they just swept the Yankees kind of crazy timing.

Big pickup for the Giants.

Where are the Giants going to play him? With Chapman on the team he'll DH I guess?

Chapman is currently injured, but based on recent history, I'd think they are better off settling Devers into a different role rather than have him fill in anywhere. I'd assume that they aren't too far off from promoting Eldridge at 1B, so I'm guessing Devers is their DH moving forward.

If you think of him in the context of a DH/bat only who makes $30M and gets moody about having to field a position when asked - I guess I can see why his trade value might lag behind his name value.

Gut reaction is this is a trade that will probably age better for the Red Sox than the Mookie deal did. Devers is a fantastic hitter but like Vlad really doesn't provide much else especially if he's not at 3B. They traded him too soon rather than too late, so from a timing standpoint if they wanted to move him then now was probably the right call. The Red Sox have to bank on their young position player prospect panning out. That will help their fans forget about Devers.

Wow

Devers gonna be a UT only fantasy player playing in SF… gross

That's really not saying much. The Mookie trade was the most vilified trades since Babe Ruth. Almost every trade compared to that one will look better.

On one hand, its hilarious that the Red Sox convinced themselves that they had no use for a 130 wRC+ hitter. On the other hand, Devers seems like an enormous sack of s*** and the rest of the team is probbaly thrilled he's gone.

Devers would have had his 10/5 rights kick in by the end of next season, as this was his ninth year in Boston. If they wait past next year, and then decide they want to deal him - by then you are looking at a 30+ year old bat only guy making 30M+ who also has the right to veto any destination he doesn't like. In that regard, although the timing did seem a bit surprising - I do see why they would choose to strike now

Red Sox are optioning Kyle Harrison to AAA. That's going to go over like a lead balloon.

They just swept their hated rival to get back into the WC race, only to trade their best hitter for AAA depth.

This is the kind of stuff small market teams have to do. It's completely embarrassing for a big market team like the Sox.

Devers almost certainly have gotten twice as much in the offseason, if not more. He's still playing as good as he ever has.

They lost a true star player and a ton of value because of organizational mismanagement. They lied to a black player and treated him like s***. No surprise there, as that kind of thing is in their organizational DNA.

I can't believe this happened today

Saw it on a distant TV at the airport and thought "no, that must be a proposed trade. That couldn't have happened".

But I guess it did.

I would argue that a team that makes promises to a player in order to get them to sign also has responsibilities. Nobody likes being lied to and stabbed in the back by their employer, even rich baseball players. Money doesn't just make that kind of thing go away, but Devers actually met his responsibilities and played well. Boston continues to show why they are the worst organization in the history of professional sports.

Both sides handled this all poorly

Reeks of GM trying to be a smarty pants, similar to the Os and not bothering signing any pitchers whatsoever

I don't see a lot of fault from Devers. He wanted to play 3B and secured that promise as a condition of signing his contract. Everyone knew that he sucked at 3B, nothing has changed since then.

They supplant him with Bregman and he's upset because he was lied to and stabbed in the back. I really think it's understandable at this point.

He meets with the team and instead of demanding a trade, he takes one for the team and moves to a DH role. He plays really well in that role. Devers looks good at this point, if anything.

Then Casas goes down and they ask him to switch to an entirely new position once again, one he has never played before. I understand the view of some who criticize him for not wanting to move again, but consider the context. He's been lied to and betrayed, but takes the high road and performs well. Then when they try to do it again, he stands up for himself and gets publically shamed by the organization. I can certainly picture myself being upset, were I put in the same situation. Can't you?

Vladdy didn't seem to complain when they moved him to first base even though he probably didn't like it

He has actually just tried hard to become a better first baseman

These guys are making a ton of money and Bregman is a way better defenderr at 3rd than either of them .

I think both sides look bad here.
