Well if Boras was holding off on getting Alonso and Bregman signed until they both had deals, the Bregman announce is imminent.  Might be up late tonight

I could see it getting pushed to Friday, with Boras being an egomaniac and wanting extended time having his name in the media. But pretty confident it gets announced by end of the weekend

Yeah we might have dodged a bullet here.  I wasn't as bullish on the polar bear as some on here.  Let's see if Atkins can go to plan c.

Alonso at his worst puts up better numbers than everyone but Vlad, Bo and Santandar .  With the DH spot still open, this team desperately needs that type of output.

We literally just signed Anthony Santander

I was referring to bringing up Orelvis Martinez to DH and maybe take the odd day at 3B.  Would like to see what the kid has to offer.

If the kid comes up he's not going to be wasted at DH

Does he have the defense to hold down 3B at the MLB level? Didn’t get to see any minor league the last few years.  All his highlights I saw were him going yard.

He is a fringe-average runner with limited range in the field. He split time between second base and third base in 2024 and is a fringe-average defender at both. Martinez has an above-average arm but an unusual release.

BA has him 45 field, 55 arm.  Average'ish.

But my point is that bringing up Orelvis to be a DH would lower his defensive ability.  Gotta keep playing to keep up the footwork, reactions, throws, etc.

Ah ok that makes more sense lol. Totally forgot about Orelvis

Don't really care, didn't really want him, don't want Bregman either. Max I'm good with, but otherwise I still don't know what the hell we're trying to do here.

He had 15 errors in 60 starts across 2B/3B last year, there’s zero way he should see the infield at the major league level for a team trying to complete unless he comes into spring showing a meaningful improvement.

or he always wanted to go back to the Mets and was willing to gamble on himself.  We gave him more years, but less than 30 mil that he's getting next year and he can opt out.

Who said this? He simply wanted to stay a Met, no doubt there.

If its that bad and Baseball America is wrong, then he should stay in the minors to work on his defense.  He's too young to relegate to a DH only.

Don't forget he missed a lot of time from the suspension.  He would have been rusty coming back.

Kinda disappointed Alonso went back to the Mets with his tail between his legs after the way they treated hi m. Kind of makes him look like a massive pussy.

I don’t think that’s the case, from all reports Jays have had the highest offer on the table for a while. He clearly went back to the Mets and took a lesser deal.

Maybe the Jays weren’t offering an opt-out after year 1, or maybe he just had 0 interest in actually coming to Toronto.

If we've learned anything this off-season, it's that 'reports' about the Jays have literally zero value. They are made up BS almost 100% of the time, even from somewhat respected reporters.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we never made a serious offer for Alonso and were just being used as a pawn in negotiations with the Mets, like we have seen with countless other players. Alonso also could have been used as a pawn in our own negotiations with Vlad Jr.

According to MLBTR, because of the luxury tax hit, the Mets will effectively be paying him 59M next year.

I still think the trade route is the way to go. Bregman has more suitors than Alonso so unless the Jays offer is significantly better than everyone else, it’s likely a long shot.

Luis Robert, Luis Arraez, Adolis Garcia, Jesus Sanchez….someone should be available and reasonably priced to acquire.

It seems obvious that we never made him a legitimate offer, given this news.

That's an odd conclusion.

I mean I doubt we offered him 5 or 6 years, but I think it's reasonable to think we offered him a 3 or 4 year deal in the $70-$100M range and he decided to stay with the Mets on a 1 year $30M pillow deal.

Judging from the Santander deal, Toronto probably offered him HEAVY DEFERRALS and Pete was more into the larger short term guarantee so he can re-roll.

Why would you think that though? Recent seasons saw guys like Belt and Turner signed who primarily played at DH as each only provided a few hundred innings in the field.

Santander can still play the outfield for another season or two before he settles in as more of a DH type. He also appears to be a decent first baseman as well based on the small sample of innings he's played there so he shouldn't be limited to DH only once he's too slow for the outfield.
