As a long time Jays fan, I very much appreciate this signing.

A switch hitter power bat.  Could be the ideal offensive player who can protect Vladdy.

Hopefully they also sign Alonzo and maybe dream big in signing Bergman and another Starting Pitcher.

Maybe Ross Atkins can redeem himself after almost a decade of mediocrty.

5 years 92 million is a pretty good price if he keeps hitting like he has.

However if we don't add another starter, sign Vlad and one more bat its just delaying the inevitable rebuild.  Its a good start, but if Vlad and Bo leave after this year its going to be a team built around Santander?  Gotta keep adding.

I bet Ross had very little to do with this signing, as it makes too much sense.  Hopefully he's already been hand cuffed.  I wouldn't be surprised if this was all Click.

Bo's 100% going to test free agency. If the Jays stink it up before the trade deadline, he's gonzo.

Though the Santander contract May outlive Atkins when the Jays will once again fail to get into to the playoffs or at a minimum take one of the wild card spots lol.

Atkins smelling the gunpowder off Ed Rogers and he is working on the phone as we speak trying to sign Alonso, Bergman and Scherzer :)

Yeah

Now you really want to add another bat and extend Vladdy

The team is set up in a way that we could make plays for any of the big remaining FA bats and it could make sense, especially if the price is right:

3B- Bregman

1B- Alonso

LF- Profar

3B- Kim

It was his plan all along

Ross wanted to make everyone think he is dumb and pathetic and then COBRA STRIKE the remaining free agency pile

Atkins will sign Alonso, and then announce that the team is moving Vlad to 3B right as they are discussing his contract extension. 4D chess.

I can't see Kim happening at this rate. Set to miss the start of the season and he projects to be Ernie Clement with more walks and Ks, for FA prices. Just doesn't make sense. If we're shooting for a big improvement at 3B it's Bregman or (trade) or bust. Or like, Yoan Moncada on a 1 year deal lol.

Not bad, gave him what he wanted in both length and AAV, signing bonus, and gave him an opt-out, but after 3rd year rather than 1st, and deferred money.

Atkins read my memo and made it better. Can't really hate this at all

Leaving us with 1 elite IF defender and sub par ones everywhere else in the infield. Ug .

Careful comparing Kim and Clement, the pitchforks will come out, despite the statement being incredibly accurate

Yeah I think you are right, but if the price is right and with Bo's departure looming he could be a shrewd move that helps this year and a lot next year. You know Ross likes his slap hitting infielders who can field.

I suppose it depends on how they feel about Clement too.

Gotta add wins where you can. Bregman would make more sense positionally but Alonso should be a much shorter contract and adds more of what the Jays need on offense (not so much on defense).

Ultimately, they just need to add one more impact guy. It sucks they are in a position where they have to spend obsessively to improve, but it is what it is. You don't want to rebuild then pay to add wins.

I think we'll end up regretting a 5 year deal, given that a full rebuild will be necessary in the near future.

So that’s what you think.😏

I don't think Ernie Clement is capable of multiple 3.5+ win seasons personally.

Good signing,  now need sign Bregman,  Alonso, Scherzer, and the top remaining international best prospects.

I wonder how bad it can get for Vlad at 3B. He's already pretty much as bad as it gets at 1B, which is insane to think about, but he legitimately has a good arm. There's like a +10 run adjustment between 1B and 3B, the worst case scenario here is 2007 Ryan Braun at -32 DRS (lol) good for -27 runs of value defensively, i.e. 2.7 WAR lost to defense. Would Vlad be the worst 3B defender ever, or can he hide his brutal range with enough arm strength to "only" provide -15 to -20 runs of defensive value.

It wouldn't help of course that his current projected partner at SS is Bo Bichette, it would be a complete nightmare on the left side of the infield.

I agree.  That's why I said if they both leave its just Santander if they don't do anything else.

Santander would be moved if vlad and bo leave

They could try and run some sort of DH rotation with Taters, Vlad and Pete.

With a groundball pitcher: Taters in LF, Vlad at 1B, Alonso at DH, Clement at 3B

With a flyball pitcher: Taters at DH, Vlad at 3B, Alonso at 1B, Loperfido (or whoever) in LF

Not necessarily.  I suspect the plan is to add enough for one last push.  If it fails, we'll trade Vlad & Bo (and others) and start the rebuild.  Santander can hit lots of HRs for a crappy team and at some point, may have value on the trade market that we can cash him in for prospects.

That's what I said
