Jays "All In" On Roki Sasaki

Are we just setting ourselves up for disappointment again? (Editor's note: if you hear any mention of an airplane and/or flight to Toronto, turn away from your screen and save yourself).

Scott Mitchell is hearing "all-in" when it comes to the Blue Jays and Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki. At some point, a Japanese player is going to have to choose a team other than the Los Angeles Dodgers and when that happens, why not the Blue Jays?

I'm sure the Jays are doing everything they can to entice the player. I also don't think the Jays would be in in top 3 or top 5 destinations and there would be a less than 5% chance he comes here.

 

And to be honest why the hell would he come to Toronto instead of LA or San Diego?

I agree with you... we can't even overpay him vs the Dodgers either.  Just posting because of his latest tweet.  I'm sure I'll get flamed for it but whatever lol

Problem with the going "ALL IN" approach to Ohatni, Soto, Saski etc.. is its fine if you have a backup plan in place but it better not take energy away from improving the club. Last year the Jays spent all their resources in going for Ohtani and then when they didn't get him they signed the wrong players.

This year if they spent their resources in trying to sign Vladdy before Soto, you likely could have had him signed for the amount they are offering now. Instead his price went way up and now you're stuck in the situation you've created.

 

Obviously easy to say all of this in hindsight but these guys are getting paid the big bucks to make these decisions so when it blows up in their faces its deserved criticism

Vladdy was not going to sign before Soto dude.

People walking around acting like the Jays could have signed Vladdy whenever they wanted to and are morons for not signing him. How do you know that? You don't. 

 

Anyways, hopefully they finally land a guy. Sasaki would be great to have.

My point wasn't even so much about Vladdy as it was offseason planning as a whole. Last year they failed and so far this year on paper they look pretty mediocre. Good thing for them is there are still lots of players available.

Any team would be "all-in" on the idea of signing a top 10(?) prospect in baseball who is MLB ready for like $5-6M. I doubt we're even in the top 5 of teams vying for Sasaki, if only for reasons such as we're not a West Coast US team or have international reputation like the Yankees do, let alone other real factors like pitching development and state of the franchise.

That's the crazy part... the max he can be paid is like 6M a year.  If we somehow pull this off, it gives us the money available to add bats and maybe even a closer that we desperately need. 

Having said that, it's the Jays so better to expect disappointment.  Just not sure why Mitchell would f*** with Jays fan when they know how sensitive we are at the moment lol.

There's basically no way to overpay here. Since Sasaki is bound to international amateur signing bonuses, it's already apparent he's not really in it for the money. $1-2M extra signing bonus isn't going to make the difference here. This actually puts us at a relative disadvantage since instead of bidding for his services with our wallet, we have to do it by convincing him that our development will make him the best version of himself. And then there's the other factors like the city, which I would actually think could be a positive for an international player, if only we weren't an East coast team.
