Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 Translated - The Canadian Team is close to signing Venezuelan [Anthony Santandar] after several media reported contract proposal for 4 years and 82 Million wilko 1
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 From one society being crushed under socialism to another. Makes perfect sense that he would feel comfortable here. Stangstag, L54, JaysfaninFL and 1 other 3 1
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 Shouldn't this be moved into one of the several threads about Tony Salamander?
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 Hmmm, "Canadian team" leaves it too open to interpretation. Gonna need more specificity. Jays24, wilko and Spanky99 3
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 It pretty embarrassing that the team traded Teo a couple of years ago because they didn't value the bat-only corner OF profile and are now (possibly) on the verge of committing 82M to a switch-hitting Teo. Jays24 1

It could have been but the rumour is supposedly saying we are moving past those initial rumours and are close to actually signing him. Could obviously be BS and as a scorned Jays fan I lean on that side lol.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 The translation and the tweet you posted don't line up. All the tweet says is the Jays are rumoured to have the strongest interest and are probably leading the pack among the other interested teams - which include the Tigers and Yankees. What is this "BeisbolPlay" you're referring to? Nowhere does it say a deal is imminent. Spanky99 1

That would be gross. How is this for a track record of corner outfield ********: Sign George Springer at age 31 to a big 6 year deal. It does not go very well as he is a below average player for age 33 and 34 and now projects to be for his final two years of pay. Trade for an elite defensive CF and then play him in LF all the time. Trade Teoscar Hernandez because you don't like his profile as a bad D, bat only corner OF. Sign Tony Taters at age 30 to a five year, nine figure deal. Talk about chasing your f***ing tail. If it happens. Spanky99, Omar and Brownie19 3

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 I just can't see anyone actually willing to go to 5/100 for Santander. Either he really doesn't want to come here and is pushing us to go above our limit, in which case someone else will get him for the reported ~4/82 figure, or he's overvaluing himself and he'll remain unsigned until he settles at his projected price with another team closer to ST.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 If that's true then the Jays should hold firm at 4/82. I don't think any team is topping 4 years, and if Santander thinks he can get a similar or higher AAV elsewhere, then so be it. This is one of the rare times where the Jays sticking to their internal evaluations and not going over might actually work. Unless I'm underestimating Tony's market, I don't see him as a 5 year contract type of FA in today's game. Sometimes you have to be willing to swallow an extra year to get the player but make sure the player is worth it. I don't think Santander qualifies. Ryu was at least a top of the rotation SP and Springer a CF, so it was a bit more justifiable even though there was risk of bad/dead money towards the end. JaysfaninFL 1

Perhaps tacking on a reduced cost mutual option for the 5th year could sweeten the pot a bit.
Bone R Verified Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 How does Santander's bat project at Rogers Centre? Maybe they can compromise on the 5th year being an option year based on performance in the 4th year, or as someone mentioned a reduced salary, so 5 years at $90 million.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 5th year could be a team option with a decent buy out. 21 mil team option with a 5 mil buyout, for example.

Yeah, basically split the difference on a 5/90 deal, reduce the tax hit with a lower AAV while spreading out the risk with the added year.

Based on the Statcast expected home runs metric he'd gain a few extra dingers at Rogers Centre vs Oriole Park.

Bone R Verified Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 With all the options we just outlined on the 5th year (option based on performance, team option with buyout on 5th year, or reduced salary on 5th year) there's a deal to be made here. Hope Ross can get er done
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2025 Posted January 3, 2025 9 minutes ago, Bone R said: Thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for. It's kind of an inexact science. Santander has typically outperformed his expected home runs season to season. From what I can see the Statcast expected home run metrics shows how many home runs a player would hit if all of his games were played in a specific stadium whereas he'd only be playing there a maximum of 81 times per season.

It kind of makes sense that as a switch hitter he'd gain some HRs at the RC compared to the atrocity in Candem Yards in LF over the past couple of seasons. The dimensions are more extreme both ways, tall wall in RF, tall and absurdly far wall in LF (which is now coming back in). RC became harder overall but probably still more favourable for pull power hitters than Candem Yards.

If the Astros match the 4/82 then he makes a lot more money playing in Texas.
