Most other teams aren't in on as many guys as the Jays. I guess we should be grateful that the CBT threshold actually means something to this team. For many other franchises it is just a number that will never have meaning.

My gut tells me if Alonso signs with the Jays, no Vladdy extension. 

 

1. The reason the Mets would let Alonso walk in the first place is to go after Vlad in FA or maybe trade.

2. Don’t see Jays signing Santander, Alonso and extending Vlad, plus all other pitchers and being within an approved budget. 

3. Highly doubt Blue Jays sign Alonso IF they have a sense they can resign Vlad.

 

Alonso = Vlad traded at deadline or if playoff team, leaving the org for a comp pick.

To some extent I bet they do, except it may be different for teams without much money to spend.  Ie the Pirates deal with rumours of what player is getting traded away.

It blows my mind that teams are struggling to pay Alonso 3/75 but there seems to be a line of teams wanting to pay Vlad 450M... make it make sense lol

Signing Pete won't prevent them from extending Vlad. His extension $ would start next season & the payroll drops significantly in the coming years.

At the same time, any Alonso contract probably has an opt out after each year or something like that. Its a very short term asset is the thought

I believe it's just a matter of time before Vlad and the club hammer out an extension.

I expect the potential Alonso deal is going to be structured similarly to Green and Santander in that both the team and player are going to have a lot of flexibility in how the future plays out. I would be surprised if the contract doesn't have ways for the contract to be morphed into a longer term deal at a higher AAV if Alonso bounces back at the plate.

Vlad will be 26 entering free agency. He has elite K/BB ratios while doing everything else Pete does (whether good or bad) at a similar level. Two seasons with wRC+ above 160 and WAR above 5.5. Pete on the other hand has eclipsed 140 wRC+ twice and only beaten 4 WAR in his rookie season, 5 years ago.

While paying Vlad $450M would be a mistake, he's a significantly better player and much younger. He has the same WAR in his ages 20-25 season as Alonso did in his 24-29 age seasons.

If Alonso and Profar sign here, lot of deferred money will be involved, and the DH will be Santander, Vlad at 3B. But great chance Bichette will be traded.

It’s not just Pete. It is everyone else they are signing or absorbing contracts or will need to before start of season. Plus, the SPs who are FAs etc will need to be replaced. That will cost $$$$$

 

By the way, I have heard Vlad is not interested in deferred money.
