Diego Cartaya was DFA by the Dodgers. His numbers have tanked the last two seasons but he’s a former top prospect and would probably be the 2nd best catcher in the org if he came here (sadly), so might be worth a shot to see if something clicks with him. A team that has trouble drafting and developing needs to get lucky,

Why not? He's still young.

Yes, please.

He's got an option left. I would definitely take a chance on him and stash him in AAA as the 3rd Catcher. Heck, you might be right in that he could possibly even be the backup.

I'm sure there's no harm in tossing s*** at the wall to see what sticks, but I don't know if a guy that produced a 60 wRC+ in the infamously hitter friendly PCL would be the second best catcher in any MLB organization.

Edit: I went ahead and read through his prospect writeup at MLB Pipeline and he appears to have very solid skills behind the plate which is not nothing. His AAA numbers were just atrocious though including an average exit velocity of 85 MPH on top of a 28% k rate so he'll need to successfully make major adjustments at the plate to have any kind of shot.

If he has an option left then it's a no brainer. He's a reclamation project so bring him on board, try to make whatever adjustments possible in order to maximize his bat, and see what he has. If it fails, it fails, but I legit cannot name a single catcher in the org aside from Kirk and Heineman. If there's any position they need to take these types of gambles, it's probably catcher.

Yeah definitely worth a shot!

Only 23-years-old as well.

Hey Dannon.  Could you just sign someone already.

Give the guy a break, I'm pretty sure he's looking at the possibility of using free agency to potentially add to the team if the parameters of the players and team align lol.

Wouldn't be surprised if a weak dollar has cut down our payroll.

2025 looks less hopeful than 2024 and that's saying something.

You're probably right about the weak dollar cutting down the payroll. Not to mention high taxes in Canada and a possible tax decrease in the USA has players not wanting to sign with the Blue Jays. Let's not forget the CRA has a history of harassing former Blue Jays players years after they've left Canada.

Anyone else hearing that Jays claimed Cartaya? I saw it on another site I frequent.

Not how it works exactly

He was DFAd yesterday, Dodgers have five days to trade him or else he goes on waivers and could then be claimed

lol @ the Rockies. The f***ing Dodgers though, god damn. Light years ahead.

I wouldn't have thought Washington was so similar to the Rockies...

I wonder if the Scherzer and other players' deferrals are baked into it. Either way, Strasburg and Patrick Corbin have been some tough pills to swallow for Washington. At least they've properly built a solid farm system and have a nice young core, I'm sure they'll spend again when another contention window opens up. The Rockies though? Big yikes
