If you're Soto - is picking the Mets over the Yanks the right move? The extra $5M is a cup of coffee for him. Who would you rather play for?

I don't think either team is in "great" position to be perennial winners of the next 5 years. Both are built through free agency, neither have a ton of youth or strong farm systems and both are likely to lose several key players via free agency this offseason. Both have deep pockets to hide the mistakes they make via free agency. It will be fascinating to see how this plays out.

Before he picked the Mets he needed assurances they will build around him. That came out last night. The Mets are not done yet…

Soto went where the money is. Why play an extra year for less money?

Not to mention who knows if he got offered any opt outs and signing bonuses.

Romano getting $7.75m, which was MLBTR's projection for his 2025 arbitration number.

Kind of funny

Shatkins will look like a dork if he has to give a C closer more than that

Paul Sewald for $10M anybody? lol

Another team willing to give Romano his projected arb number definitely makes the move to non tender him a bit more puzzling. Obviously we don't know anything about his medicals or what the Jays were looking at but the Phillies (who have done really well with relievers lately) seem to think it was worth the investment, and they likely don't do that if his arm was mush. If you thought the Moreno glazing was annoying the last two years, I can't imagine what Jays social media will be like if Romano bounces back.

You think it really matters when he's 40? I would think opportunities to win during your prime, far outweigh an extra year at age 41 and a few million. But maybe that's just me.

Yankees sucked ass the year before Soto got there. Their lineup is literally 2 players so I'm sure Soto feels he'll be able to help a team that just went to the NLCS.

Don't worry, I'll lead the way on this message board. With Atkins comments about Romano being healthy and now the Phillies signing him to the same deal will put this move under the microscope for good reason.

Of course Atkins is going to say Romano is healthy. He's not the type to s*** talk a former employee. Let another team pay for a broken arm.

Oh man, you got that right. Tons of pressure on Atkins with this one. If Romano balls out he'll look like a doofus.

I swear to God if Romano was actually healthy and this douche of a front office let him go for nothing...

Again - it's all based on probabilities. Rangers got Yates for like $4M last year and he got Cy Young votes. There was probably a 2%-5% chance he put up the numbers he did last year. Probably a 70% chance he broke down and got hurt. That very well may be the same probabilities for Romano this year. Would you want him for $7.75M for that probability? The Jays may assess that probability, decide that's not worth the risk and determine they either a) want to pay a bit more for higher probability, or B) take a chance on someone cheaper for the same, or slightly worse probability. If Romano goes on to save 45 games and is a stud this year, you can suggest the Jays assessed that probability incorrectly - and maybe they did, or perhaps they assessed the probability correctly and the Phillies just "hit". Fans will never know the true answer, so their complaints are going to be more hot air. That said, if he pitches well, this certainly is going to come with a s*** ton of bad publicity, whether it's fair or not. AA was lucky because Yates was BALLS for Atlanta, so fans never questioned his decision to let him leave.

(and yes, I suspect Romano has a higher chances of success than Yates did last year)

You're assuming that Philly isn't going to do their medical on him. Easier to believe this stupid ass front office probably dropped the ball... again.

Who cares about Jordan Romano? He's a 32-year old reliever who just missed like 80% of the year with an elbow issue that hasn't been repaired. You can give the same money to Chris Martin or something.

Legit worried about the cost of putting together a decent bullpen

We need like 4-5 guys

3 arms would be good, they need at least 2 high leverage arms.

He's probably cooked.

We don't.

Just like the 2023 pen flipped from being great to terrible, it can flip back the other way next year.

You add 1-2 good arms, you rely on guys that were good last year, and you have to hope/expect 2 or 3 guys flip the script and pitch better. Can also add at the deadline after we see where things are at.

On a good team, they'd probably slot in at like:

1.

2.

3. Green

4.

5. Swanson

6. Little

7. Burr

8. Rodriguez

Read that Martin is only pitching one more year and would prefer to stay close to home in Texas, but point still stands for other similar options

Had the same thought. Green should be your 7th inning guy and Swanny your fifth best. The rest of them just filter in and out

Swanson was pretty good in the 2nd half fellas, after dealing with injury and his kids accident, that didn't help coming out of ST. He can be used in leverage.

Jays like Pop, obviously and I wouldn't punt Danner, guys with options will likely go down.
