Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 It's wild to see. And yes, the sample size is a lot smaller than Toronto's, but, it might give a slight indication of how fickle things can be in baseball. I wonder if Braves fans are calling for their hitting coaches to be fired, suggesting they must have implemented a new philosophy across the organization that has ruined their offense, or questioning if there are issues with their player development. And then of course, there is a possibility that all these things are true (or that some of them are) and whether AA should be to blame for it. I’ve actually seen some speculation that it has to do with Ron Washington leaving. Something about him holding players to a higher accountability than most coaches. Say one thing for Ron Wash, almost every team he’s been apart of has had a crazy good offense. Rangers, Oakland, Atlanta
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 I was on Braves Reddit yesterday. They're calling for a rebuild and seem to agree that their core are a bunch of feckless losers. Loll
AMS528 Verified Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 The daily AA posts have stopped. They've turned into daily Teoscar updates. I've gotta say though if you've lost both your ace pitcher and your best position player to injuries and are still for the moment holding onto the top wild card spot you're doing fairly well. Bo obviously sucks this year but if we had lost him and needed someone else at SS and lost Gausman right at the start of the year, we would be well past stick a fork in us at this point. We'd have kept Biggio, been playing KK even more, and been giving a decent number of starts to Mitch White or Paulo Espino or something.

But, the Braves offense has gone from the best in baseball by a mile (41 runs more than #2 and a 125 wRC+ v. 118 for #2) to below average. Acuna wasn't anywhere near himself before the injury and most of their young core players are having horrendous years. Acuna alone doesn't move the needle this much.

Bo has 0.4 WAR, he might as well have had a season ending injury in spring training Gausman has an xERA over 5.00 and has been brutal at various times stick a fork in Toronto anyway!

It's less their performance (although Gausman has been ok and better recently), and more the knock on effects for the roster when you have to replace them.

Yeah ofc Gausman would have been a catastrophic blow considering what else has happened with the arms, Manoah dying, Y Rod getting hurt, and all the other depth pitchers being worthless Bo.... I wonder if the Jays would actually be better off right now haha.

The difference is the Blue Jays have been s*** for two years now and didn’t do anything about it. They were also at full strength. Let’s see what AA does. I would wager he won’t let it continue through the trade deadline a full off season and 60 plus games into the next season.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 but but but awex anthwopolus I mean its tough losing two of the best in the game, in Strider and Acura Jr. for the year. Others like Olson, Riley, Albies and Harris need to step up offensively. As well, they were without Murphy for a good chunk of the season, who just came back. They've hit a tough patch, but still sit at 36-30 and lead the NL Wildcard. Would rather be in the Braves position than the Blue Jays currently.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 The Braves are also a case in point for just get in and you have a chance. 2021 - 88 wins, win world series 2022 - 101 wins, 1 playoff win 2023 - 104 wins, 1 playoff win The Blue Jays might not even get in this season based on the horrendous offseason Atkins had lol.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 The daily AA posts have stopped. They've turned into daily Teoscar updates. I'll still take the Braves over the Blue Jays any day of the week, even without Strider and Acuna. They still sit at 36-30 and lead the NL Wildcard. I don't see AA standing pat at the deadline at least and he'll address the holes on the roster unlike some other GMs.

You gave Atkins a free pass pretty much on everything so why should AA be any different?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 It's actually not dissimilar from what they Jays have gone through: Acuna was hitting for 0 power (109 wRC+) then broke Olson is worse across the board and only has a 118 wRC+ Harris II can't hit at all (84 wRC+) Murphy can't hit at all (11 wRC+) Riley can't hit at all (82 wRC+) Albies has turned into a slap hitter Basically their offense is Ozuna I don't expect their offense to be that awful over a full season. They also just got Murphy back as well and he's only had 42 AB's. Braves lineup should turn it around. If their struggles continue into next season with guys like Riley, Albies, Harris, then sure I would be concerned.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 The Braves are also a case in point for just get in and you have a chance. 2021 - 88 wins, win world series 2022 - 101 wins, 1 playoff win 2023 - 104 wins, 1 playoff win Yea, but as AA says, look at the run differential of a team at the deadline, that’s how you know if you add or sell etc. 2021 Braves, 2015 Blue Jays etc. The current trend is not looking like the Jays will have a significant number in the plus runs column, anytime soon.

Big bats in their lineup like Olson, Riley, Harris and Albies need to step up. But yeah imagine the Blue Jays losing Gausman for the entire 2024 season and losing Vladdy a couple of weeks ago. Things would be way worse. At least the Braves are 36-30 with a +27 run differential and lead the NL Wild Card despite losing two of the best in baseball and while a good chunk of their lineup has sucked.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 Yea, but as AA says, look at the run differential of a team at the deadline, that’s how you know if you add or sell etc. 2021 Braves, 2015 Blue Jays etc. The current trend is not looking like the Jays will have a significant number in the plus runs column, anytime soon. Braves leading the NL Wild Card, at 36-30 with a +27 run differential, even without Strider, Acuna and majority of their big bats sucking. Murphy just got back as well. Jays sit at 33-35, 3 GB of WC3 with two other teams ahead of them and with a -35 run differential. Braves are still in a much better position especially if their big bats come around and AA makes some movies at the deadline.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 Gotta give AA props for trading for Chris Sale this offseason and signing Reynaldo Lopez and making him a starter. If Atkins signed Reynaldo Lopez as a starter and he had the same success here, the Atkins cult would be praising Atkins as a genius and saying how it was a steal locking him up for 3 years at $30M.

You literally have zero self awareness. Here you are praising AA who added Lopez and Sale to his rotation. But if Atkins made the same moves and it was praised by anyone it's because "Atkins cult". So I guess this makes you a member of the AA cult by your own logic.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 Yeah, Braves have been great. The WS and then great regular seasons. Sometimes s*** just doesn’t go your way. Again, as people mentioned the problems were apparent last season, but besides that even, the Jays have objectively underperformed at least 5 years in a row. For years they were seen as the sexy WS pick and they were out of the AL East race pretty much every year by May. Very little exaggeration there

But if Atkins made the same moves and it was praised by anyone it's because "Atkins cult". So I guess this makes you a member of the AA cult by your own logic. The Atkins cult even a couple of weeks ago was saying AA built a fragile rotation this season with an aging Sale and targeting an arm like Lopez who was used as a reliever over the last couple of seasons. Haven't heard them give props to those moves at all. If Atkins was the one who signed Lopez, they would be dancing on the streets saying Lopez was for real and that Atkins and company discovered some hidden secret etc. Since it was AA, it's been crickets and criticisms that Lopez has just been lucky so far.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Nah if Atkins made those moves he would say they were just “lucky” Did you discover any new evidence if the Orioles have been cheating this season? Detective Stangstag on the case! How about dem Yankees as well? Judge is on a heater and has to be cheating!

Having a World Series Title and a couple of seasons of leading the NL East. Don't understand why some of the Atkins cult (Brownie19) love to compare AA's record with Atkins all the time. It's like comparing a bottle of Dom Perignon with a bottle you find at a 7 Eleven. Braves lost Acuna, Soroka, and Ozuna in 2021, snuck into the Postseason and won a ring, but only one, so AA sucks. Braves lost Freeman and Swanson as two big FA's and they still won 100 games the following season. Though AA sucks. Braves lost Acuna again, Strider, Murphy, and all their major bats have sucked this season, but still sit at 36-30 with a +27 run differential, leading the NL Wildcard. But AA sucks. A lot of these members of the Atkins cult really need to chill out and stop comparing AA with Atkins. It's not even close. It's like comparing a bottle of The Macallan Double Cask 18 Year Old with a bottle of Crown Royale.
