I was going to say well Profar was pretty decent last year, and could have made sense and didn't realize I was thinking of 2022 when he was solid. I completely missed that he was literally one of the worst players in baseball last year. He really vacillates between being pretty good and completely unplayable.

Since his debut in 2013, he has been complete s*** in odd years while being pretty good in even years.

It’s not about hindsight 20/20 on a certain player that’s going good. He doubled down. Replaced one of the more reliable bats last year with a 40yo and did nothing to hedge against that, or the reasoning for the 2023 terrible finish on offense and quick playoff exit. He doubled down. That’s it. Offense was clearly not on his mind, I’m not aware of him even saying it was something they were looking for and maybe it didn’t come to fruition. He bet on this offense and he’s clearly lost..

I'm added onto those great posts, by offering up other players we could have had for nothing. This board needs more useless posts.

Well for at least the 5th year in a row, Jays are a disappointment and this time so bad, they may not make the playoffs. Farm is bare. Future looks s*****. I’m sorry you get offended when people second guess these last few years and say they should’ve done that or this. Come to think of, maybe they chose just completely do away with sports radio, all the ESPNs of the world, NFL/NBA Gamedays. We should just not speculate on what any team could’ve done better. The world according to Brownie

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Victor Robles DFA today What happened to him? I guess injuries? He was a Top 5 prospect and 65 FV at one point. Put up a 3.7 WAR season as a 22 year old.

I’m sorry you don’t like it. I don’t like most of the stuff you like. That’s the way the world works. Ironically in this case, it’s also kind of the main purpose of a message board. A successful one at least lol.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Hopefully Jays don’t sink as far as the White Sox. Also not long ago they were on the rise, future looked bright, all fell apart

It would be better to have some support for what you post, otherwise its the usual mindless drivel
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 It would be better to have some support for what you post, otherwise its the usual mindless drivel The last week of ST, there was an article about 5 former top prospects on the verge of being DFA’d, Adell and Bart being 2 of them. I mean ok on the hindsight 20/20 stuff, but can you not comment at that time and be like “this player would be a good target”…O’Neil was actually discussed a lot last year. Profar a little bit as an option out there. They were all valid plays to say maybe they shouldve gone after such a such. As I’ve gone back to a bunch of times, they didn’t go after anyone, never mentioned it was something they were looking at, they bet on the team and lost. That’s not speculation, it’s fact right now. So it’s fair to speculate what could’ve been done better. Sorry you don’t like it.

I have no problem with that. Joey Bart was DFA'd, but I believe he was traded before was put on waivers. I have to assume Pittsburgh thought they had to trade for him, as he wouldn't make it to them in the claims process. The Jays would have had to assume the same. He's out of options and I don't think he could have been sent down without clearing waivers, which was highly unlikely to happen (hence why Pittsburgh traded for him). Do we really want the Jays to trade for him and then roster Jansen, Kirk and Bart? Can you see why some might suggest that's not a great fit? You wanted Jo Adell. Could we have traded for Jo Adell and rostered him instead of Voggy? Sure. Is there anyway you would have traded for Adell and planned to play him regularly (instead of signing KK)? Absolutely not - not for a team trying to make the playoffs. A team like the Rockies could have done this, but not the Jays. Could Adell have sat on the roster to start the year and then worked his way into the lineup? Sure he could have, but that's a really difficult assignment for someone without much experience. You may recall Atkins did something like this quite recently with Bradley Zimmer - who was also a former top prospect, who was coming off a much more successful season than Adell has ever had. As you can see, the likelihood that type of move works out is quite low and often isn't something that playoff type teams do. Most on here completely ripped Atkins for adding Zimmer. Personally, I separate results for process and don't have a huge issue with that type of move, even knowing it fails 9 times out of 10. O'Neil? I mean sure, he was another risk/reward type player. I don't know if we could afford that type of risk as a starting LFer. There's probably an 80% chance (maybe higher?) he's an often injured 0.5-1 WAR, sub 100 wRC+ OFer like he's been every year except 2021. I wouldn't have had any issue adding him as a 4th OFer and swinging for the fences more. Guys like Profar? I mean they are looking for opportunity and there's a good chance they had no interest in coming here and at the end of the day, you can't just cherry pick the s*** that stuck to the wall without acknowledging the s*** the fall off. Every team tries to find s*** that sticks, but most fail (even a great org like LA can't make s*** like Kiki Hernandez stick). Amed Rosario Gio Urshela Kike Hernandez Nick Senzel Dom Smith Hunter Dozier Jesse Winker Austin Nola There are lists and lists of guys with a pedigree, or previous success that teams take flyers on every year. Even for the great orgs - most of them fall off the wall man. I don't try to pretend that GM's really know who has a bit of glue left on them. Could we have throw more s*** against the wall instead of keeping our incumbents (Biggio and Clement I guess)? Sure - we could have, but they have as much chance of sticking as the others. Biggio is a guy with pedigree who other teams would have thrown against the wall too. I can appreciate that things have failed and people will question moves - as Jim said, I think a little context helps. Pointing out the Jays could have traded for Joey Bart without acknowledging that would have meant carrying 3 catchers on the ML roster comes off a mindless drivel.

Adell looks like he might stick. For every player that surprises, there are 20 that perform as expected or s*** the bed. All you are doing is cherry picking and saying "Jays should have gotten this guy. Ross sucks." It's dumb, sorry.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Personally I'm not sure which players the Jays should have signed last off season. I'm just gonna go have a quick look at fangraphs and I'll BRB to tell you which ones.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 I mean, someone simply mentioned Joey Bart. This person made the mistake of thinking it wouldnt be taken as “Jays should’ve signed Bart”. I think he just meant as an example of a high reward/low risk for offense. Going into the season, it stands to reason that wouldn’t be a position Jays would look at, vs IF/OF where they should’ve

It's dumb, sorry. He sucks because he made a dramatic overreaction to why the 2022 ended early, and then refused to hedge any bets to the teams clear failure in 2023. Didn’t even attempt it. Said “play it back”. Also not taking into account the possible volatility of his RP. Now you’re just grasping at straws whining when people are just saying, he should’ve sign this perso, or that person. That’s what happens when you fail. Questions start coming up. I know certain people really struggle with accountability.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 Sad day for baseball. How this guy kept his job for so long is remarkable. We all wish to suck at our jobs and still be employed lol.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 Wow - finally. Great day for baseball. Of course he's spent the last 2 weeks negotiating a financial settlement. The guy is a delusional POS. He will forever be known as the worst umpire to ever step on the diamond. When umpires miss calls these days, the kids all say "c'mon Angel".
Masterbather Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 Sad day for baseball. Both overjoyed and kind of sad. One of the greatest heels in the history of baseball. I so loved to hate him. There are others but, it just won't be the same.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 That's all completely fine, but those questions can still be stupid and stupid questions can be called out. There’s 3 scenarios: 1) You try stuff and it works 2) You try stuff and it doesn’t work 3) You don’t even attempt to try I think due to last seasons tank job to end it, it’s completely warranted to object to #3, as many were even pre-season. If someone simply wants to throw out examples, more power to them. That’s what you get for doing #3 and getting a last place team.
