tazsub3 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 The man will be 30 in July and already had Tommy John twice. It's entirely possible he never pitches well again and is a $700 Million DH. I know i know , we need to make ourselves feel better hahahah . But man he is the greatest fa ever . Let’s not beat around the bush .
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 10/700 and most of it is being deferred at Ohtani's suggestion. Tells me he was going to the Dodgers regardless, but at least had an open enough mind to check around. Will be interesting to see what the Jays offer was if that ever comes out I never would have guessed 10/700... 12/600, 13/650... yeah I could see those numbers but 10/700 is just an unmatchable number IMO. 100%. His agent is able to say he got Ohtani the most guaranteed money + his preferred destination. I wouldnt be shocked if the Jays offered a better value deal, less guaranteed money but also less deferred/paid out over a much shorter term.

Marew Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Ohtani won’t pitch 500 innings rest of his life. As soon as he starts hitting 850 ops in a few years his contract is brutal. They need a lot of pitching and need to win next 2-3 years
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 the 2nd procedure was not tj Good, so Rasmussen still has only had 2 TJ and a partial
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Might turn out to be blessing in disguise on the field long term, but sooo hard not to salivate over how exciting at least a few years would be at the RC. Yeah would have been really exciting having him here no doubt. There were always going to be concerns with that type of big contract anyways, so while I'm a bit sad the Jays didn't sign Ohtani, may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I guess it's okay to say that now since he signed with the Dodgers. But if you raised any concerns about his potential contract just a couple of days ago, different story.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Either way he had surgery on his elbow twice before 30. His body can't handle it which was evident late last season. Faulty logic. There's plenty of pitchers who arent two way players that have had multiple TJ surgeries. It's unlikely being a two-way guy is much of a factor. The most likely factor is the fact that he throws thousands of baseballs every year as hard as he can in the most unnatural way for a human arm to do it. The few dozen "hard" throws he makes from the OF each season back in Japan isn't even a drop in the arm-stress bucket. Swinging a bat, while does use the same ligaments as pitching isn't even in the same ballpark as far as UCL stress goes.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 So we all agree... f*** Ohtani because he was always overrated and now extremely overpaid lol.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Author Posted December 9, 2023 So we all agree... f*** Ohtani because he was always overrated and now extremely overpaid lol. Nah. The best player since Babe Ruth gave us a legit shot and it took an unfathomable offer from one of the league’s best franchises to stop him from signing here. I still like him and wish him well.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Author Posted December 9, 2023 what I don’t get is how the hell do deferments lower the AAV for luxury tax purposes? What was the point of all these other teams signing guys to 13 year deals? Why not just do 10 with deferrals?
Marew Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Last season after he stopped pitching and was just DHing he developed oblique issues. It's called over training... when you do too much and aren't recovering you start getting injured. I'm not talking about over using his elbow. Is it safe to say ohtani is cooked? I didn’t want to use that word in case we got him. But now that we turned him down, I think he’s cooked
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 apparently no opt outs For 700M f***in rights there’s no opt outs you’re here forever
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 However the LAids Dodgers are skirting the luxury tax with deferred payments is total BS and should piss off every FO in the league
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 what I don’t get is how the hell do deferments lower the AAV for luxury tax purposes? What was the point of all these other teams signing guys to 13 year deals? Why not just do 10 with deferrals? It doesn’t lower the luxury tax
Pinkfloid Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Wonder if we had traded for Soto if it would have proved to Shohei that we would do whatever it takes to win. Tough to look at our lineup without a bat like that, and compare it to what the Dodgers have.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Author Posted December 9, 2023 It doesn’t lower the luxury tax Yeah I saw your explanation after I posted that makes sense.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Ohtani just used us for leverage and Atkins fell for it. He surely never had any intention of signing here. Also, I was on board with 50 mil per year, but 70 is excessive. Without looking, that may be more than double of any other player, or close to it.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I'm not trying to make myself feel better I stopped caring about the Blue Jays when they let Bass go. Ohtani will be on the verge of 31 when he pitches a MLB game again. I don't think his elbow can handle playing everyday and being a starting pitcher as he ages. LOL And no other team picked him up
Marew Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 It just means if they don’t win in the next 5 years they probably won’t be winning in the next 15 after that. They are insecure about the 2020 Covid season
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 It doesn’t lower the luxury tax According to Passan it does
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 According to Passan it does I haven't been able to verify for certain one way or the other but the explanations I've seen point to the overall AAV for salary tax purposes not being affected by deferrals.
Pinkfloid Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Wonder how this impacts how other FAs will feel about coming to Toronto, to potentially be seen as a plan B compared to Ohtani. Money talks, but that perceived stigma might be a deciding factor in a player choosing to play somewhere else.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 According to Passan it does Ah so the deferrals are discounted to today's dollars, and the discounted value counts towards the cap. Makes sense.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 This is fine, we'll just get Soto instead. Oh wait, s***.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Wonder if we had traded for Soto if it would have proved to Shohei that we would do whatever it takes to win. Tough to look at our lineup without a bat like that, and compare it to what the Dodgers have. Nah he was leaning Dodgers all along, we would have needed to top their offer to have a shot. And even then, Dodgers might have been willing to go up to 800 and beyond.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 And the only team not to have a pride night won the World Series. Ok so you have a problem with sexuality, gotcha
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 That’s a pretty big loophole if true, and completely goes against the whole point of the luxury tax
mikepelfrey Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 It doesn’t lower the luxury tax at all. Not even a dime. All it does is give them more cash currently to spend more to improve the roster. Every team has a certain amount of capital earmarked for current liabilities and a certain amount for debt servicing. All the deferrals do is shift the money owed from current to long term debt service. As an accountant I’ve seen corporations do this every day as a way of shifting tax liability.
