Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I thought the rumored 12/614 was stupid money... this is just dumb lol
PhillyBlueJay Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Oh well. We knew he wasn’t ever going to Toronto. Dodgers will regret that contract in a few years. Not sure what the Jays are going to do now. If their only move is re-signing Chapman then it’ll make it easy not to watch next year. I have to really agree with that statement! I think Atkins and Shapiro should be gone next season, they never had a chance to get Ohtani to leave LA, and let Soto slip away… that being said he will go to free agency anyways hoping to get 500 million. But I will not be watching Jays in hopes Chapman bat comes alive, and clapping every time he makes a defensive play 😞. Worst problem now is that every free agent out there things their own value has increased because of Ohtani contract. Every free agent will want 300 million plus 🙄. Totally f***ed up market this year! What will be worse is to watch the Dodgers now drop another 300 million on the Japanese pitcher 😡😡😡
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Its is. It counts towards luxury tax. But in reality, Dodgers aren’t paying 250 mil + the tax. They’re paying like 150 mil + the tax. Ah, gotcha

Join a Phillies forum and post there instead to really stick it to the Blue Jays!

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Damn that stings. All my sports teams do is hurt me man.
tazsub3 Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I hate this management from the day they came in, but i have to give them credit, they were a serious real player, and just missed on the greatest FA in any sport. It did not happen, but i see lots of good from it for the jays going forward. Though I like most here am heartbroken...... Oh and i will watch the jays, even if it is chapman at 3rd!
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 As much as I'd love to watch Ohtani for the next 10 years, I wouldn't be very happy to have us pay 70M a year for him. The same goes for what it would have cost us in trade for one year of Soto. The front office definitely has to do SOMETHING fairly significant to improve the team though. We can't waste the time we have with Vladdy and Bo.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I don't give a f*** about the money. He's a once in a many generations talent, and would have made a huge difference in the Jays ability to attract even more talent, but of course he ends up either a Dodger or a f***ing Yankee. So sick of coming up short on these game changer type talents.

PhillyBlueJay Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Hard to feel like the Jays weren't used for leverage in negotiations. Not trying b to stick it to Jays, just frustrated at Atkins and Shapiro allowing themselves to get played… f*** did they actually think the Dogers were going to be allowed to be outbid?! Soto makes Yanks way better and they should have focused on him!!! Nothing in the market compares to Ohtani and Soto’s impact bats! This whole fiasco will cause major and I mean major fan disappointment to the point that fans for 2024 have already written off the Blue Jays as not being winners or a possible playoff team. It is the reality unfortunately… how do Atkins and Shapiro recover?? I think there is a couple of ways, sign the Japanese pitcher if they can and invest in his youth at age 25 for 10 year contract and guarantee Jays have solid pitching foundation for next 4-5 years. Go get J.D for DH and sign Bellinger. Oh and one more note….. the deferred money the Dodgers agreed to with Ohtani means they are 100% going after the Japanese pitcher to dominate the Asian media market!!!

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 lol with one giant swift kick in the nuts I went from wondering if the Jays would win the division to wondering if they'll finish 3rd or 4th

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 10/700 and most of it is being deferred at Ohtani's suggestion. Tells me he was going to the Dodgers regardless, but at least had an open enough mind to check around. Will be interesting to see what the Jays offer was if that ever comes out I never would have guessed 10/700... 12/600, 13/650... yeah I could see those numbers but 10/700 is just an unmatchable number IMO.
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 before the Ohtani signing payrolls: Dodgers ~$130M Jays ~$192 Freidman spend the past 2 seasons cutting dollars to make room for this very moment
Benito Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I'm absolutely gutted. I really believed the reports yesterday that he was on the verge of signing with the Jays. But people s***ing on the front office for trying is absolutely asinine. Ohtani's camp stressed information blackout, so no one knows how close the Jays were. In the end, the team was apparently willing to shell out $600 million contract. How many teams in the league even would be able to say that? The fact is, it took the largest f***ing contract in all sports history to sign Ohtani.

I wonder how soon before Yamamoto signs there now too

He's going to make a lot of merchandise sales plus don't forget his home country where they will be buying those Dodgers merch. They will be able to recoup those investment easily.

hanton Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Was a gamble that paid off for sure. I wonder how soon before Yamamoto signs there now too They're in a great position right now both in terms of payroll and player depth (mlb and prospects). Expect a few on their 40 man roster - MLB ready players - to be moved in trades. Atkins should give Freidman a call - Busch, Sheehan, Vargas could be had...
wamco Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 How many innings does Ohtani pitch during this contract?
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Jays Dodgers final.....Jays in 5!
PhillyBlueJay Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 So how long until we find out Yama signed in the AL east? lol I know there have been significant reports that Atkins made multiple trips to Japan and heavily scouted Yamamoto. Man would I would do f***ing hate like seriously hate if Jays went all in to get Yamamoto and fell short again to the Dodgers who sign him… One would think Yamamoto is on Dodgers radar but argument could be had that Yamamoto might not want to be under the shadow of Ohtani and Betts and create his own cult following! But seriously, if Dodgers or Yanks sign Yamamoto does not give me a good feeling about watching baseball when Jays had the money and fell short on Soto, Yamamoto, Ohtani.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I agree. I thought 500 was already crazy too. Yeah he was overrated and just a DH.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Yeah he was overrated and just a DH. Might turn out to be blessing in disguise on the field long term, but sooo hard not to salivate over how exciting at least a few years would be at the RC.
