Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 After we sign Ohtani we should debut Kikuchi's name on the Level of Excellence on Opening Day. Imagine if we traded Kikuchi afterwards to save some money loll
Marew Verified Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 I know the education system hasn’t been great for people of Ohtani age, especially a star athlete he probably didn’t focus on academics. I wonder if he knows the pilots who A-bombed his mother land were Americans. Tibbets is from near Chicago and Sweeney from near Boston.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Once Ohtani is signed im all for YamaSOTO next Nah...trade Manoah to the Padres as part of a package for Soto and sign Bauer for 10 cents on the dollar.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Jfc Springer Ohtani Bichette Soto Guerrero Jr Would there be a better top 5? May as well convince Ohtani to play the outfield since he's not going to pitch this year. Sign JD Martinez to a 1 year deal. Springer Ohtani Soto Vlad Bo Martinez Now that's a top 6. The off-season is fun. You put yourself through mental excercises dreaming about s*** that won't happen. Still there's no reason not to dream about Ohtani until he signs somewhere else.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 I want him to sign here so I can hear the entitled Americans whine
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 In Passan's latest article (behind a paywall so I'm trusting Twitter/X to be accurate here) he confirms that the Dodgers, Jays, Cubs, and Angels are the teams still in the running for Ohtani, while the Rangers, Red Sox, and Mets are turning their attention to other players.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Yu pt2 I never recovered from that.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 I never recovered from that. In case people want to say hi
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Nah...trade Manoah to the Padres as part of a package for Soto and sign Bauer for 10 cents on the dollar. This makes the most sense
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Yamamoto posting ends Jan 4. Possibly Ohtani does not sign until after this date, when the teams that lose on Yamamoto might pony up more for Ohtani?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 I’d still be shocked if he signs with anyone other than the Dodgers, but the longer this drags out is probably a good thing for the Jays/Cubs.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Jfc Springer Ohtani Bichette Soto Guerrero Jr Would there be a better top 5? What the hell kind of post is this? You add Ohtani and Soto and the three best hitters of pretty much any team and you could say the exact same. This is like jinx extraordinaire.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Looks like we may know at some point next week. Would like to think the Jays got a meeting.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 I’m curious to see what he ends up signing for, or even where the offers are now. If the Jays are a finalist, then they’d have to be willing to go at least $500m, as I doubt they would have gotten this far if they weren’t willing to go there, but how much beyond that are they willing to go? I would think they’d have to beat the Dodgers offer by a decent amount to get him. Would Rogers go $600m plus? Regardless hopefully we have an answer by this weekend and the off season can finally progress. Five weeks of dead silence after a historically bad World Series kinda sucks.

Passan says a source said it will "surge" beyond 500M The Dodgers probably put up 600M and get him.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 (edited) Not to be a wet blanket, but what is the probably that Ohtani never returns to form as a pitcher? 2nd TJ surgery. What are the chances that someone is paying $600M for a phenomenal RFer (I'd assume he moves to RF and is a stud there if he ever has to give up pitching)? Although I 1000% love watching him pitch, I've always wondered just how good he could be if he just focused on hitting. Is it a 40% chance that whomever signs Ohtani gets little to no pitching out of him? I wonder how much teams are factoring that into their offers. Edited December 1, 2023 by Brownie19
itaos Verified Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Is it a 40% chance that whomever signs Ohtani gets little to no pitching out of him? The odds aren’t great that he’ll be close to the same pitcher he was after 2nd TJ. Eovaldi has had the best outcome so far and Taillon is sorta ok.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 I don't think there is a 40% chance that the team would get little to nothing from him as a SP since the present talent is so high. But there is a chance that he is never as good. I don't know the rates on 2nd TJS recovery. The date is fuzzy anyway since most players with MLB track records who have a second surgery are old, anyway. But there are some examples of guys who were never the same. Mike Clevinger is one active one. He want from a front end starter in 2018/2019 to a pretty meh arm. It's a distinct possibility that the next version of POhtani is no longer an ACE quality arm. If he's just an innings eater SP, then the benefit of having him on the bump at all needs to be scrutinized.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 He won’t be worthy that contract not close imo how much longer will the arm hold up?

At what point is his effectiveness on the mound no longer worth "wasting" him as a DH? Is he PRIME Mike Trout if he becomes a fulltime RFer? I think he's probably a 7-10 WAR player
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Every FA contract is a gamble, and more often than not a losing one. I don't think Ohtani had the TJ. He opted for the strengthening procedure.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Author Posted December 1, 2023 I'm sure the Jays are pitching him on some sort of plan to keep him healthy as a pitcher and are pointing toward their sterling record of doing so with the pitchers they currently have. He probably wants to be a two-way player for as long as he possibly can. If I'm the Jays I'm also trying to figure out a way to get him in the OF on top of it. Seems like that would really appeal to him as well.

Maybe Ohtani wants to pitch, even if he becomes 2021-2023 Patrick Corbin on the mound because he wants the legacy of remaining a 2 way player his entire career.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 0 chance I'd want to give any baseball player 600M... let alone a player who has a chance of just being a DH for most of the contract. This is a type of contract that rarely ever works out and can screw you for the entire length of it. Obviously I'd be pumped to get Ohtani but the backend of that deal is gonna be extreme dark times.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 I don’t care if they give him 600M if they sign one of the greatest FA in all of sports I will not complain for the next 13 years
