jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 People keep bitching that the Jays should have "fixed" offense last off season I said it couldn't have been "fixed" without Ohtani and/or Soto Pretty simple. Yet somehow a bunch of mouth breathers take that to mean that i don't think it could have been improved or that Atkins is absolved of all blame and gets a "free pass" lmao And they just keep repeating that I have that stance. And then a guy likenyou comes along and apparently thinks that's my stance too Round and round we go Yes Atkins should have looked at ways to improve the offense last offseason. Ohtani or Soto weren't the only bats needed to fix this offense. Yes ideally they were the top elite bats available; however, there were upgrades available via free agency or trade even if they struck out on both Ohtani and Soto. Again, you keep saying Atkins couldn't have done anything to fix the offense last offseason which is a bunch of BS! Just stop man!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 You are undoubtedly correct but the Debbies are parsing your words to fit their argument. Of course Teoscar would have helped. We'd probably have a couple more wins. But that's assuming that Atkins and Mattingly could squeeze as much out of him as the Dodgers are. And like you said, if Vlad, Bo, Springer, etc. were playing up to their potential that would be something like 5 or 6 wins right now. A couple more wins means Jays are above .500 and likely holding the WC3 spot. Definitely a lot better position to be in. As well, if Vladdy, Bo and Springer started to turn the corner, they would be in a way better position with a bat like Teo and/or JDM already in the fold. A couple more wins could be the difference of making the Postseason and not making the Postseason.

This from a guy who doesn't even know what the word "fixed" means. The Dodgers could literally hand Teo over to the Jays right now for free and their pitiful offense would still not be "fixed".

Depends what you think of Orelvis Martinez and Justin Turner going forward. I mean offense wouldn't be fixed but a bit better. 95% of the problem is major league development. If Jays had normal aging curves everything would be fine.

Imagine a world where Vlad/Bo/Kirk peaked at average age 26-28 instead of 23. Imagine they improved upon their age 22/23 performance like normal players. Vlad would hit .320 50 homers. Bo would hit .320 30 homers. Kirk would hit .300 20 homers and be an on base machine. Those numbers sound like video games but would be just a little improvement over where they were at 22-23 Even imagine they hit their average projections as they were at the beginning of 2022. I think that puts Vlad at .300 with high 30s homers. Bo at .300 with 25 homers. Kirk at .285 with good on base and line drive power. I mean it is an insane crazy kick in the nuts what has happened to these 3.

That is why they sacrificed some offense after 2022 in order to improve the OF defense and pitching. Little did they or anyone else know that Vlad/Bo and Kirk had already peaked and Springer was about to swan dive into being an 80 wRC+ hitter than can play a solid RF and that's it.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 1.5 games back of Boston now 6 of the next 9 games vs Boston HUGE games pass Boston and Toronto has the pole position of all the WC3 wannabes. one series left against the Twins (WC3) as well unfortunately no games left against KCR (WC2) to make up ground directly I think the Buffalo boys are going to do this. Get ready for a non-stop summer of: - Spencer Horwitz dink singles - Davis Schneider dingers and inexplicable days off - Ernie Clement dice roll balls in play and tomahawk chops at pitches at his eyeballs - Addison Barger absolute chaos 110 mph grounders and 110 mph throws Trade Bo Bichette to the Dodgers to fuel this run. Get win-now pieces.

Honest question to the Debbie Downers - would that completely change your opinion of this FO if this team finishes with 84 wins and goes on a deep playoff run? (if someone could post their answers for me, that would be appreciated)
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 The Dodgers don't exactly have MLB pitching depth to deal from given all of their injuries right now. But they do have some edge of the roster position player depth: Gavin Lux, James Outman, Miguel Vargas. I guess you could also include Andy Pages in this group since he is unproven, but he is hitting well for them so much harder to get him. And I would assume that they have some minor league arms worth acquiring, that they would be willing to give up. Guys like Landon Knack or Justin Wrobleski. A Bo Bichette trade to LAD seems like a foregone conclusion. Get him out of here! They needed him BEFORE Mookie broke his hand. There are literally no other starting SS on the potential trade market. It's Bo or No(body).

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 Boston has the above average pitching that seems to play up against us. They've been good largely because they have abandoned their fastballs. I wonder if they will still do that or if they'll go fastball heavy against us. Even so, our starting pitching has been on a roll. I like our chances to pick up another series W. I have some concerns with the bullpen though lol. It looks like dogshit without Yimi.

Most of their rotation is complete death to RHB Maybe Barger and Horwitz will give the Jays a lift against these SP like Houck. But I would not expect the RHB to do much of anything. Springer shouldn't even get a start against Boston tbh, might as well just have KK in their for D every game.

Yeah, looks like Green and Pearson will be on closing duties. Both pitched yesterday, but on 3 pitches for Pearson and 7 for Green. I was thinking maybe they'd recall Burr today if Yimi is out, but he pitched yesterday for the Bisons. Maybe Hagen Danner is ready for a solid look.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 Getting Yariel back will help. He can be the bulk starter and Francis can be the long guy and Richards can move back to a 7th inning role.

(if someone could post their answers for me, that would be appreciated) If the playoff run comes on the back of the Buffalo guys (DS, Horowitz, Barger, Martinez, etc), and they simultaneously traded Bichette to add multiple long term pieces, then it would certainly bump the FO up a bit. It would show some semblance of success with player development and for once a proactive approach to asset management (trading Bo now instead of waiting a year). That seems very unlikely to happen, though. The Buffalo group might be decent MLB players eventually but they aren’t the Orioles prospects. DS was found money. Not sure we can expect that with other prospects, although I think Horowitz has a good chance to be what he’s shown so far (which plays much better at 2B than 1B/DH). Also I’d be shocked if they traded Bichette if they still had a chance at the WC.

I also think Horwitz looks pretty solid at 2nd base (which is kind of crazy) and his bat obviously plays very well there. I don't think there's any chance we deal Bo this year if we stay in the WC hunt. It's a Bo hot streak that could carry us through the playoffs.

I don't know if he would need to trade Bo but for Atkins to get off most everyone's shitlist we would need to see: -Buffalo boys produce, thus showing that he can develop some homegrown talent -Other good farm news, like maybe Tidemann makes a few good starts down the stretch or Orelvis has a big debut or something -Have a good trade deadline -Core players like Vlad, Bo, etc. have big second halves -Make it past the Wild Card round, possibly would need to make the ALCS Tall task, but not impossible

Of the Buffalo Boys, Barger definitely has the most tools. Elite bat speed, good raw power, huge arm, good speed. Schneider has a lot of half tools. Horwitz probably has a solid hit tool and that's it. But both of them seem to get the most out of their talent with good plate approaches and baseball moxie.

If he doesn't let some misplaced loyalty to his vetrins (I'm looking at you Springer) guide his decision making, there's a chance for success. Can Atkins get out of his way?
