max silver Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 Did Votto literally die from stubbing his toe on a bat or whatever? Christ almighty. That's an odd development as Kirk is literally the worst guy on the roster to park at first base given the fact that he's 5'8" with super short stubby arms that further limit his wingspan.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 If Mitch White is really gone this time then it’s a toss up on whether Nick Frasso can beat the 0.6 WAR that White gave us. De Jesus could also factor in. This is going to come down to the wire folks. All you Frasso fanboys may just in fact be right after all. We'll find out in a couple years...

Likely for an emergency, but I think Jano would be better suited for that. Odd indeed...

I was low key hoping that White would be able to carry forward the upper 90's heat from the end of the AAA season and spring training but unfortunately his stuff returned to previous levels pretty much as soon as the regular season started.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 They are probably just giving him a few because there could be some scenario where he pinch hits in the late innings and they don’t have anyone else on the bench so he has to play the field. You’d think they’d put Jano there and Kirk could catch instead but whatever
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 5'8" with 14" arms "Hey, let's put him at first" lmao

Rest of the infield will have 0 margin of error on their throws lol.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 The Jays analytics department has heard your criticisms and is now thinking way outside the box you guys We don't need two fat first basemen, so Vladdy trade imminent.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 Yeah, Atkins' strength has definitely been short term MLB signings/trades from 2020-onwards (he was kinda bad from 2017-19 in that area). Obviously having a large payroll is a reason for that, but you still have to hit on those signings, and he has for the most part. Yet 99% of the bitching and crying about Atkins this offseason was about the short term deals he was signing. And while it's early, it looks like he has hit on most of them yet again including IKF, Turner and perhaps even Yariel (need to see more). So once again, the haters and losers (of which there are many) have been proven wrong.

I think more of the criticism of Atkins this offseason was not signing a power bat or two for this lineup, when the team desperately needed a power bat. I myself had no issue with bringing back KK or signing IKF, but I didn't want them signed here as starters and I didn't want those contracts to hinder them from signing anyone else. Gotta hope Vlad, Bo, Kirk, Varsho and Springer all start hitting for some power. Don't want to waste another season of great pitching!

We've been through this. That's because you believe the success of a GM should be judged based on how many playoff/series wins they get. That simply isn't a great way to judge someone when most series are nearly a coin flip.

No, success of a GM is based on talent accumulation. If a great team fails to win a WS, I don't blame the GM. This team simply doesn't have enough high end talent considering the payroll and the state of the system. They are content to be pretty good. They are in fact relying on the coin flip.

So are the very good teams. The best of teams may only be favored to win 60% of the time. Most series are 55%/45%. That said, I do think they had enough talent to win it all in 2021, but the failures of Vlad, Kirk, Varsho, Manoah, Berrios (2022), even Springer has made it feel like they aren't good enough. Not sure how much of that blame I can put on Atkins. Some yes, but there's some horrible luck involved there. Blah - I'm done with this convo. Sorry.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Who's down for a Kikuchi contract extension at the All Star break?? I don't want the the Yankees getting their filthy hands on him. I want him to keep beating them. I just presumed we'd let him walk and replace him from within but he (and the SP prospects we have) are changing my mind

Sorry. 2021 was their chance, they blew it by not investing enough in the bullpen, they let the bullpen destroy them that season when they had an all-time lineup. They should have gone all in realizing that that was the best chance in whatever window they were going to have.
Masterbather Verified Member Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Hindsight 101... How's it hindsight if we knew it at the time? 2 MVP caliber players, knowing one would be a free agent and leave, a Cy Young winner, all stars. When the hell were we going to have a better chance than that? That was arguably the best lineup we've ever had, with 1993 being a possible exception.

They didn't have the budget then, and they did try to patch the pen, it just fell flat. P.S. This team is good.

I hope you're right, but I suspect IKF and 2024 KK in particular are not going to meet the criteria that other Atkins short term deals have. Also, I think Yariel was the one signing no one really complained about as none of us had any clue what to expect from him.

I get that they're pretty good, like a lot of teams are pretty good. I just prefer the contenders that AA put together. That f***ing 2015 team, I had zero complaints at the end of that year. Didn't win but they were the best team. I went to the playoffs expecting to win with that team, I go into the playoffs hoping to win with our recent teams.
