Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Manoah today, so far: Walk Walk Walk walk 4 strikes, 18 balls Ouch. What a disaster.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Manoah just gave a homer, 6 earned runs in 1.2 IP
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Manoah just gave a homer, 6 earned runs in 1.2 IP We're cursed. We could be DFA'ing Manoah and Vlad at some point this year.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Another earned run off another hit, 7 runs now EDIT: Now he hit a batter
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Manoah just gave a homer, 6 earned runs in 1.2 IP lol... at least Nimmala went deep!
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Manoah: 1.2 IP, 5H, 7R, HBP, 4BB, 2K, HR
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 (edited) Has anyone seen another pitcher with such promise fall off like this. Tons but usually there’s an injury or multiple involved. Granted, maybe his shoulder thing is more serious than initially attributed to just laziness and poor conditioning. Or it’s both. Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 lol... at least Nimmala went deep! Silver linings haha Manoah pulled, final line: 1.2 IP 5 hits 7 earned runs 4 walks 1 hit batter 2 Ks 1 home run 37.8 ERA 58 pitches, 26 strikes
Sorrow Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 I'm expecting Manoah shoulder surgery announcement before May, misses the year and is released this winter. Namala hit a nice home run though of Gipson-Long who has had a decent start to his MLB career.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Has anyone seen another pitcher with such promise fall off like this. In the early 90's there was the much touted prospect named Todd Van Poppel. Like Manoah he didn't have a great deal of minor league experience. While not identical, there are some paralells there if you want to dig into the Van Poppel story.
leaffie Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Thanks. I do remember him. I am probably one of the few that feels badly for Manoah.
Jays333 Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Werent all the real analytic nerds saying all along that Manoahs really good season seemed like a complete fluke?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Thanks. I do remember him. I am probably one of the few that feels badly for Manoah. I'm just mainly curious as to how his command just vaporized. Just watching his side-by-side shots from 2022 to 2023 and you can see differences in hand and leg positions which throws everything off. He may need to be a complete delivery rebuild kind of situation.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Thanks. I do remember him. I am probably one of the few that feels badly for Manoah. Nah, I feel for that guy, he must be so far deep in his head it's scary. I hope they figure it out.

Van Poppel never had any success at the ML level though. Not many pitchers go from 3rd in the Cy Young voting to out of baseball 2 seasons later. Vladdy curse

Not a bad comparison but he had lights out stuff and threw high V for the day. Manoah was never that. TVP got derailed more by injuries didn’t he?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Werent all the real analytic nerds saying all along that Manoahs really good season seemed like a complete fluke? Yes, more of a 3rd/4th type of guy than an ace, but... BOOM... he fell flat on his face! You can see he worked hard in the off season to get in shape etc, but it's an enigma the way he just lost his command out of the blue.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Werent all the real analytic nerds saying all along that Manoahs really good season seemed like a complete fluke? yes - most believed he was never as good as the 2022 stats suggested. But most expected he could be a solid #2/#3 type.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 His stuff just didn't play in the bigs. It may not play in Independent Baseball

TVP and Manoah have similar development stories. You should gett off the Vladdy blame game.

ColdPint Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 I can’t recall - does the GM get an introduction during opening day pregame festivities? Chances of a loud chorus of boos tomorrow if so?

bluejaysinternNo5 Verified Member Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 It’s incredible how quickly things seem to have fallen apart. 2021 felt so good and I thought we had another 3 years of that to come. Things really looked incredible with Vlad finding his footing, Manoah getting his feet wet and looking great, guys like Kirk mashing, smart signings like Semien producing, etc. Now we know Vlad is not the Lisan Al-Gaieb, Manoah can’t get hitters out in single A, and our biggest off season acquisition is IKF. The only positive I can think of is that if things can swing negatively that quickly, then perhaps they can swing positively that quickly as well. It will need to.

The positive really is they've been playing like dogshit and are still 4-6 against 3 of the top 10 teams in the game. When a good team plays bad against other good teams, they go 4-6. I doubt they'll score many runs over the next 3 games either given the SP they are facing, but the plus side there is the Mariners can't score either.
