glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Modest offseason suggests the Blue Jays are putting themselves in a position to pivot off this core soon. Would be detrimental for the next competitive window to saddle yourself with a bad contract or blow prospects. You could be right, this off season has almost been a carbon copy of the 2016-17 winter, right down to misjudging the market by signing flawed players early. They knew the 2015-16 window was closing but wanted to keep the train moving for as long as they could without handcuffing their future flexibility. However I’m not sure if that was the same logic used here or whether they just did what they felt was the best they could do based on a bad free agent market and what turned out to be a non existent trade market. The difference between signing Ohtani and doing what they actually did is night and day. Shapiro’s contract is up after next season I believe. I would think him and Atkins are joined at the hip at this point, and there’s no reason to believe Shapiro’s job is in danger unless he himself wants to leave. Atkins has not operated like a man who is worried about job security, which makes this off season even more confusing.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Regardless, Atkins is definitely on my own personal hot seat! He’s running a Top 5 payroll and we have a coin flip chance at the playoffs and a bottom 1/3 farm system. He needs a big year to keep his job. His ass should have already been fired right after the playoffs but now Shapiro has tagged himself along with Atkins if this upcoming season is a complete disaster. We are going to be coming close to 10 friggin years of them being there. Like how much time do you allow before you realize they have utterly failed on the field.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Bichette is a bad defensive shortstop.. Good Lord
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Bichette is a bad defensive shortstop.. Good Lord Don't worry... everything will improve from last year lol.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Manoah is one excuse after another. It's a way to buy some more time before he goes out there and potentially shits the bed again. Hopefully he figures it out because I'm pulling for the guy.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Probably going to start this season when Jays are out of the playoffs. But Chapman would have had more trade value than anyone Atkins signed this offseason.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Don't worry... everything will improve from last year lol. I can't wait for another long season of you complaining about absolutely everything. Back to the ignore list I guess.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 It's gonna be very important to keep Jansen healthy this season. He has a chance to become our everyday cleanup hitter if he does. Him in a contract year might help to finally see a full year of Jansen raking.

They ran payrolls over the Jay’s and two were under .500, and one just barely avoided a sub .500 record. This team’s in good position I feel, they don’t really have any damaging contracts.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 I know ST, but runners costing us on the base paths again. Our leader also..

I don't think Jansen is going to be playing every day though. The team is likely to run Turner as the primary DH option most of the time, and Jansen will be splitting catching duties with Kirk as well so that limits his overall availability. And that's assuming he actually manages to avoid spending a bunch of time on the injured list in the first place.

I think there's a chance he DHs more than we think if he hits like we've seen him do in the past. We are going to have to get creative this year to maximize this team offensively. This would mean we see Turner in the field more than we'd like but hopefully we do that in games where we're using a fly ball starter.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Positive post alert - I like IFKs defense at 3B already lol.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Francis looking good, Manoah can figure it out in Buffalo.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 I was just responding to another person's post lol. I feel bad for you. What's happened in your life to make you the way you are? Is your life so bad that bitching about everything the Blue Jays do is actually what you choose to do in your free time? Why would you choose to be so negative? If you can't be even slightly optimistic about your favourite team in Spring Training - then what are you doing? I'm sorry if you have some physical or mental scars that make you this way. It must be a tough way to live.

There are different types of personalities in life and baseball fans: i. The very Canadian one is good try boys, we made it to the playoffs and we are better than 20 other teams. ii. The other one is more of a Yankee's fan base or Red Sox fan base, where the expectation is to win it all year in year out and anything less is not a successful season. We know you are i, but others on here are a ii. It seems you always try and stifle the ii and give credit to mediocrity. Some of us in life, business and baseball are not as accepting as you are for mediocrity. This off season and the current state of the team has multiple valid reasons for criticism and negativity. Your post sounds like the Communist Party of China trying to stifle dissent as to the great Blue jay FO.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 The Blue Jays are purely nostalgia for me these days. The team annoys me sometimes but I think back to being a 12 and 13 year old kid obsessed with baseball watching them win the World Series two years in a row. Then the strike happened in 1994 and I stopped watching for many years. We've had 2 good years of what I'd consider fun baseball since and that was 2015 (2nd half) and 2016. The only year I considered fun and entertaining under the Shatkins regime truly was 2021. We didn't even make the playoffs that year because they reacted too late by letting the bullpen blow game after game.

We didn't even make the playoffs that year because they reacted too late by letting the bullpen blow game after game. And it happened again in 2022…. Then last year they were too slow to react to the lack of offense (the numbers will turn around surely!) and it looks like they will make the same mistake in 2024. I really hope im wrong and the offense rebounds, but they haven’t hedged their bets at all.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 lmao what in the actual f*** is going on in here? Atkins "MO" is to have one of the worst offenses in MLB? Really? Since when for f*** sakes? Last year was there worst year offensively since the "window" opened in the Atkins rebuild and they were still top half of the league in offense. Some knucklehead predicting the Jays will have one of the worst offenses in the league after a few ST games? Again..are you f***ing kidding me? There are 6 or 7 teams projected to have better offensive fWAR than the Jays this year. We'll see how it shakes out, but one of the worst in the league?? Come on man, step back from the ledge. Yes the point of the forum is to discuss the Jays and baseball, but holy s*** do we really have to complain about the same s*** over and over and over and over again and again and again before they've even played a regular season game? Let's at least wait to see if they actually suck before complaining ad nauseum about how much they suck.

Yea though they jays had a local GM that not took them on most exciting runin decades, to be replaced by this mediocre, gm. To add insult to injury, that local kid went on to win a world series, while the jays remover their ace once through the order or similar other f ups.
