John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 17, 2024 Posted January 17, 2024 (edited) I believe the Ramirez/Jays rumors had the Guardians asking for Moreno, Martinez and others in a package. This was before Ramirez signed his contract extension and was prior to the club acquiring Chapman. I believe this immediately after the season where Moreno destroyed AA pitching to the tune of a 192 wRC+ so it's understandable why the team would have been hesitant to trade him at the time If that’s the case then it would also to have been only 2 years of Ramirez unless he extended. Orelvis had also just destroyed A ball and held his own at High A at 19. Hindsight is wonderful though, I mean if you knew you could extend him at what Cleveland extended him for … I would have done that deal all day every day. But for only 2 years with no extension…and giving up peanuts for Chapman instead, can’t be mad at that I could see an argument either way in hindsight. Kirk had just torn the cover off the ball in his 2021 call up, Jansen already entrenched, and a Ramirez acquisition would have taken up 3rd base where Orelvis was projected to play at that time. Trading both of them would have been defensible especially if an extension was agreed on. I wonder who the “others” were. Pearson probably. The Chappy trade was headlined by Gunnar Hoglund, Kirby Snead, Zach Logue and Kevin Smith; all complete donut holes. Edited January 17, 2024 by John_Havok

The two years of remaining control for Ramirez was the exact reason I was happy that the club scoffed at the Moreno/Martinez rumors as that would have felt like an overpay. Given how badly Ramirez wanted to stay in Cleveland as evidenced by the super club friendly contract it seems he would have been very unhappy to have been traded which very likely would have reduced his desire to sign an extension with the Jays.
deanmike Verified Member Posted January 17, 2024 Posted January 17, 2024 Kind of starting to seem like we are out on Joc anyway with the rumours he wants to stay on the west coast.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 17, 2024 Posted January 17, 2024 Jays have about $18 million before they hit the next luxury tax level. Give (most of) it to Soler and call it an off season? Unless some sort of bargain trade materializes later on.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 17, 2024 Posted January 17, 2024 Kind of starting to seem like we are out on Joc anyway with the rumours he wants to stay on the west coast. I want Soler more than Joc anyway. He doesn't have to be platooned and I think he's more likely to put up a monster season.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 17, 2024 Posted January 17, 2024 They gotta keep Soler off the field though. Just DH and hit the cover off the ball big boy

wamco Verified Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Get soler, trade yimi and sign a lefty masher OF. Thats if they truly aren’t going to go over the tax level 18m or so from now. It would be crazy if they had 0 to spend at deadline though, which inevitably would put us past that tax level anyhow. I think Chapman at 1/20 is still in play if still avail later ala semien.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 I would rather they overpay Soler for 2 years instead of giving him 3+ years. If it has to be 20+ for 2 years I think we would all be fine with that.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Crazy that so many guys are still unsigned at this point. Please let us get one of Soler/J.D. and one of Bellinger/Chapman on cheap deals.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Fangraphs has an article today about vlad I think it echo's what most have said on here. Stop listening to old boomers who miss what baseball was back in 1985. Swing and miss more - stop trying to "make contact" and "use the whole field". Unfortunately, he's too good at making contact and does so far too often in locations where he can't punish the ball. Be patient for balls in zones you can do damage and don't be afraid to swing and miss more. 2024 is going to be a massive year for Vlad. He's either going to get back on track and hopefully push towards that HOF career (that he has the talent for). Or he's going to push even deeper into that "one year wonder" narrative. The success of this team will be greatly effected by which Vlad we see in 2024.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Fangraphs has an article today about vlad The quick version for those not heading there: Vlad was better in 2021 than 2023 because he murdered baseballs at the top of the zone. His EV at the top of the zone last season was worse, but it was better in the lower part of the zone than 2021, though that didn’t help much. Stop trying to hit everything, take bigger cuts at the top of the zone, sacrifice some contact for power. Groundbreaking stuff really.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Donnie Baseball telling Vlad to sacrifice contact for power seems like wishful thinking, but who knows.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Donnie Baseball telling Vlad to sacrifice contact for power seems like wishful thinking, but who knows. It’s a generic kind of advice, but for Vlad it’s more like “sacrifice contact for power in X part of the zone” not everywhere.

With Vlad's power I don't even agree with that part of it. I think the problem is that he's too good at making contact, so when he swings at balls he can't do damage with he puts them in play instead of fouling them off or swinging through them. He just needs to do a better job picking what he swings at.

I think Kirk has a similar issue in that the bat to ball skills are so good that he tends to put balls in play he shouldn't have been swinging at to start with. His chase got rate worse while also whiffing less which wasn't exactly a recipe for success.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 -Manoah, Yimi Garcia and Ernie Clement or Espinal for Kim and try like hell to extend him -Sign Ryu to a one year deal -Sign a cheap DH in February when the music stops The playoffs will be easy to make.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Ban. This is the guy that said Yama to the Jays It's been a slow as hell offseason. I'm accepting all incoming news lol.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 For who? Kim? Hes speaking out of his ass but I included the video
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 One year of Kim for Manoah is risky
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 One year of Kim for Manoah is risky Unless they can get an extension in.

Mlbtv has this deal off by 1.0 Manoah Espinal Garcia For Kim Espinal plus Garcia salary 1m more than Kim I think. Would you do that? I think I would as I see upper minors bullpen as our strength.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Unless they can get an extension in. Can’t factor a hypothetical extension into the price you’re paying
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Can’t factor a hypothetical extension into the price you’re paying Sure you can. I just did.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 I would go all in and add Cronenworth to that package. I'm not opposed to taking him. We could play him at 2B and move Schneider to a UT role or even DH. But he is a negative asset at this point since he is signed through his age 36 season so the Padres would have to add something. Or maybe we take Manoah off the table and just give them a bunch of slop for Kim and Cronenworth. Horwitz, Espinal, Garcia, etc.
