Stop comparing Albies contract to a potential Schneider offer. It's even further off than Whit's. Albies was an MLB top 10 prospect and 20 years old. Schneider wasn't even top 10 for us.

I just think most of you are missing my argument entirely. 3 million AAV doesnt get anything done when the league minimum is over 700K and rising every year.

Im not arguing he shouldnt be approached, just that if they approach, they have to do it with something more than 6/20 for economic reality reasons. 6/30 and maybe they have a starting point that makes sense.

20M in total is like

700, 700, 700, 4M, 6M, 8M

why would you think about AAV when the player has to make six figures for three+ years to begin?

20M is like guaranteeing him more than some people think he would be expected to make in arbitration anyway. Like, lots of people probably still don't expect him to even make it through arb without getting non-tendered.

If I’m Schneider and the Jays offer me 20M you bet I’m taking it. Look at Scott Kingery or Jon Singleton who took the cash and ended up becoming nobody’s.

I disagree that MLB economics are much different than five years ago. The arb system is the same and the $/WAR hasn't inflated that much.

League minimum in 2019 was 555k. In 2024 it will be 740K. Arb contracts will start to go up in a similar fashion because they have to. When top guys are getting 40 million per season, and the minimum is 30% higher than 5 years ago, arb contracts will go up too, that's just the nature of the game

He'd be a f***ing idiot to turn it down

Unless his dad is a millionaire

No way he'd turn that down, it's not happening anyhow.

There isn’t much difference between paying him 20M for 6 years or 30M. The 1.67M/year difference in AAV is mostly negligible

Pretty much. Even if Dad is a millionaire 20M by age 30 probably dwarfs dads estate

This. He's a pretty humble and blue collar guy who nearly retired a year ago. I don't think he's taking this season for granted at all.

If you offer him something like 6Y/20M or 7Y/30M, he very well could take it.

Just don't think it's realistic at this point.

Which part? That the Jays would entertain extending him or that they would offer 20M?

I think so. The advanced stats say a guy in his position ought to take the financial security

Absolutely! From the view podcast interviews I've heard from him, he also strikes as a guy who would want to bust his ass to reward the team and earn the contract, as opposed to the type of player with a planet sized ego or born with a silver spoon up their ass.

Personality-wise he actually reminds a ton of Janson, another guy I want is trying to extend this offseason, who may also come cheap because of age and injury history.

It's not INSANE to think that Davis Schneider is similar to Rhys Hoskins.

Maybe more whiffs but some defensive utility instead.

Schneids could hit .230 and still be pretty solid if his walk rate is going to up in the 14%+ range.

Szymborski was on Jays Talk Plus today and said ZiPS already liked Davis Schneider coming into the season (1.6 fWAR projected for 2023), but now he’s being projected for like 3 fWAR in 2024.

Massive W by player development to get a 26th round pick to this point.
