This new schedule makes it so every AL Team is going to have lot more easy matchups. Us throwing games like this is going to hurt us.

Romano is inconsistent this season.

He's not a lights out closer he never has been. Ultimately I would like to upgrade the closers spot and move him to the 7th or 8th. I've never felt comfortable with him is closer long term.

Looks like our starting pitching is falling in line......the bullpen though may just bury us.

the no stars today

Belt, Romano, Jimmy

Terrible day at the plate for Chapman.

Jays are spending close to $88m just on starting pitchers, yet don't want them to throw over 80 pitches when things are going well. Makes sense.

Is this just a temporary early season thing?

Never heard that before with these Jays…the last 3 years. The pen will all be dead at this pace of IP anyway. Lack of RISP hitting and the decision to take out Alek killed us. If we can win tomorrow 2/3 at that stadium is a big deal. But it stings to have a Cole start right there to win and not close the deal.

Rinse, repeat. Rinse, repeat.

I don't think so. They'll likely have analytics that dictate pitching decisions and use them regardless of what the actual results on the field are. I can't imagine that changing any time soon. Trusting Mayza to get a righty out rather than Gausman on 90 pitches in a playoff game was likely just a way of warning us of what's to come.

Yeah, timely hitting was big, Alek was money today, great job... and I'm at a loss with Schneider, no reason Alek can't come out for the 8th inning in that situation. BS. Rubber match tomorrow should be another doozy. Hah!

Yep. I’d add even with Biggio struggling I hate giving up outs just after a rope by Merrifield, who can run if need be. Bunting is really f***ing hard in todays game with these arms and we just suck at it.

Well That was rough. The bullpen obviously not good enough. Pathetic job by management after all these years. There is no excuse for this.

And Biggio is a player with no identity. Long swing with no power is just sad.

Alek looked great at least.

Starters not allowed to go deep into games despite success is just putting more pressure on and overworked and underperforming bullpen. When push comes to shove though. None of our relievers miss bats consistently miss bats enough outside of Trevor Richards.

I don't know how many more examples he (or higher ups) need before they change their mind about starters.

Gausman last year WC game.

Berrios in the Astros game.

Today.

Like, why take them out unless they get in trouble.

They think they have a good bullpen

My comment when he called for it. :P

They (front office) put a lot of weight into the 3rd time through the order thing and they think by switching pitchers and having different stuff it keeps the hitters off balance and prevents them from getting comfortable.

The strategy has merit, but the thing they aren’t seeming to understand is that the more pitchers you use, the more likely 1 will have a bad day. And overusing guys will cause them to fatigue. And also if you use the same relievers 2-3 times in a series, the opposing teams get more of a look at them.

For example today, they saw Garcia yesterday and had more of a feel of what to expect. And Romano had an bad day.

Most of the time the team makes the correct choice when pulling the SPs quickly. We just tend to notice/feel it much more when it goes wrong.

Today, however, I fail to understand why Manoah would be removed when it was the BOTTOM of the order coming up for the third time. If he failed to get through the inning clean and the lineup turned over again and it was Volpe/Judge coming up the fourth time through, then I get it. But they already let him face the top and the meat of the order a third time, and it's not like he was tired or showing any signs of decline... I really did not get it today.

It also does not help that Toronto just has Romano and then a bunch of middle relievers... so they are almost never going to a relief Ace...

Also the game was 0-0 and you gotta think about potentially saving bullets if the game goes to extras. Just completely confusing decisions sometimes from John

Meh, I don't really think Yimi Garcia has been a problem or necessarily the reason why they lost today. First of all, no reason Manoah couldn't have been left to face 7-8-9. With Yimi, he gave up a 99 mph EV with an xBA of .310, unfortunately it was in Yankee f***ing Stadium and it of course cleared the stupid short porch. Garcia had a 3.37 xERA coming into this game, so it's not like he's being rocked, and he had been getting swings and misses. Not sure why we felt the need to put him into a tie game on back-to-back appearances when the guy you chose as the Opening Day starter was cruising through the Yankees lineup and facing the bottom part with a good pitch count.

Yimi Garcia should be fine, he won't give up a homerun on one out of every three flyballs he induces all year. But the bullpen needs to stop being taxed like this when the starters are finally performing and not showing any signs of faltering.

The problem is we have a ton of middle relievers and only 1 real high leverage back end guy.

This results in a bunch of miscast roles.

We really need an arm like Pearson to pan out back there so we have that triple digit high K dude that it seems every BP but ours has.

This will likely be an issue in the Postseason unless someone like Pearson or Green can take on that role of a relief ace not named Romano.

Blue Jays bullpen is decent and has nice depth but like Laika said, it's a bunch of middle relievers. Ideally you want to have another relief ace or two who isn't your closer.
