Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Jays could have used Teo's bat in 2023 and most likely he puts up better numbers hitting at the RC instead of Safeco. And yeah, gives the Jays the inside edge to sign him to an extension. ] As well, you missed the essence of my argument. You shouldn't have to trade away a solid everyday player for a reliever. If the Jays had a better front office, they should have found and developed their own version of Swanson rather than trading away a solid outfielder for one. Imagine how bad the Jays would’ve been though if they weren’t so LUCKY with the starters staying healthy. That would’ve counteracted any difference Teo would’ve made.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 If we keep Teo in 2023 instead of trading him for a legit setup man and then using the savings on Belt and KK we probably miss the playoffs that year. Swanson, Belt and KK all had very very good years and Teo was really mediocre. The Atkins haters have so much ammo to use to prove their points. Why they keep falling on the Teo sword when it was clearly a good trade for us I will never understand. Just let it go fellas! Its funny that idiots like Jaysblue can’t acknowledge that: 1. Yes the trade was a good trade for the Jays 2. They probably should have signed Teo back on a multi-year deal this offseason The two points are not mutually exclusive and im not sure why people act like the trade has anything to do with 2024 Teo.

That reminds me of when AA traded away Mike Napoli for Frank Francisco. Napoli exploded offensively and gave Texas a 179 wRC+/4.3 FWAR season, and Francisco gave the Blue Jays a 0.4 FWAR season. This trade was far worse than the Teoscar trade as it was a straight up 1 for 1 trade, and Francisco only had a single year of control. This was just another example of how AA kept f***ing up and trading away all of the good catchers he had (Napoli, Gomes, D'Arnaud) while keeping JP Arencibia instead.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 In hindsight, Semien would have been an excellent guy to sign back and have him as the primary SS. Move Bo to 2nd. His contract was seen as a bit crazy at the time but so far he’s been worth every penny and likely already providing surplus value on the deal as a whole. I think the deals were essentially the same, but unfortunately Semien chose the Rangers offer due to personal reasons as well as the fact that Texas has no state income tax.

Why even engage with it? Any argument that starts with "in hindsight" or requires 5 or 6 different things to have happened in no particular order rather than what did happen without knowing anything about a players wants or mimdset or literally any actial contarcts that were or went offered.....it's just pointless whining Ignore and move on.

And then he finally realized the error of his ways and traded for a stud vet like Murphy. Also shelling out to sign Russell Martin which IMO changed the culture of the Blue Jays immediately. Although he decided to trade away Contreras who looks like a better player that’s younger with more control…. So maybe he actually didn’t learn the lesson.

A lot of how that trade looks long term will depend on how much Murphy bounces back with the bat. It was pretty shocking to see him produce a 76 wRC+ this season as he came into the year with a 119 wRC+ average for his career. I can only assume he was greatly affected by injuries to have suffered from such a drastic reduction in all of his quality of contact metrics and batted ball variety.

I think even if you compare Murphy to Contreras straight up, Contreras is clearly better as long as he doesn’t take a step back. Like if both guys are playing at their best, Contreras is better just because of the salary difference.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 Everyone did. That's why multiple people opined that your logic was stupid. lmao... it's uncanny the self awareness.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 Relievers are volatile as f***, especially with a split, and it wasn't all back luck for Swanson in '25. Macko is still a lotto ticket. We'll see how he handles the arm injury. His tits got lit in Sept. There was an alternative universe where we extend Teo on the cheap in '22 as a "corner OF'er" (spits) but instead we went all in in Barrio breakup and viva la run prevention! But we have had this "debate" 10 million times. We digress lol. Relievers are volatile. Yes Swanson pitched great last season, but you shouldn't have to trade an everyday player like Teo for a reliever like Swanson. You develop those guys in your system or you sign a reliever via free agency. The Jays would have benefited from having Teo in the lineup in 2023 and who knows, maybe it would have made it easier to resign him for 2024. Overall, wasn't too crazy about it at the time and looking back still not. We'll agree to disagree lol. Is there an echo in here? The trade was fine. Could the Jays have signed him in '24 who knows, they tried too. He wanted multi years and took the 1 year with the Dodgers, who wouldn't. At this point we're all quite aware that this team has needed thump.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 Short series it makes sense for tactical flexibility to go with a short pitching staff. That one extra pinch runner could change the outcome of a game. Stroman's second half has been dreadful. Velo dropping like a stone. He may be officially washed. Let the crying begin.

Cashman when Stroman was a Cub: Not trading for him, he wouldn't make our stating rotation Cashman when Stroman was a free agent: Signs him Cashman in a critical 5 game series: Leave him off the roster Cashman in the 7 game ALCS if they advance: probably wants him as swing man Not sure how Stroman's ego will handle this Edit: yeah, with his recent performance he may be done for the year Edited October 5, 2024 by G-Snarls
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Just noticed that Justin Turner finished the season with a 117 wRC+. No slug at all, but I think most would have taken that result when he first signed. At mid season, I'd have never thought he'd finish well above JD Martinez...

Really no role for him whatsoever in a 5 game series If they make the next round maybe he slides in instead of... Duke Ellis? who is Duke Ellis? I hate the off days in the playoffs. Yankees go: 10/5 - game 1 10/6 - OFF 10/7 - game 2 10/8 - OFF 10/9 - game 3 10/10 - game 4 10/11 - OFF 10/12 - game 5 why the f*** do they get three off days in a five game series lmao is this even baseball?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 Yeah - that's one of my biggest pet peeves of playoff baseball. Far too many off days. It doesn't mimic the regular season at all. The top RP's can pitch in almost every game. Depth becomes irrelevant. I guess you get to "see the best" more, but I'd rather they find a way to cut the # of off days to 1 or 2 per series. Bring back a little more strategy.

Its pretty dumb they started adding an extra offday in the middle of the DS now too. The format has always been 2-2-1 with offdays on the dashes, but for some dumb f***ing reason they added another day in between, guaranteeing teams can use their 1-2 starters twice each on normal rest.

Obviously for TV reasons. Now Sunday/Monday/Tuesday and potentially Thursday and Friday they are having only evening games.

Yeah - for sure. And to be fair - I expect there to be baseball on every night during the playoffs and I don't love having them overlap as I want to watch as much as I can. I also don't want games starting while I'm at work thank you very much

Kinda like how Fedde, Kelly, and Mikolas did after pitching in Asia.
