Varsho’s 112.5 mph double in the first inning was the hardest hit ball of his career, and by quite a bit actually. Previous high was 110.9. That’s like 60 raw power at least I think?

After seeing how good his ABs were this game, 6 WAR season incoming.

For context, Bichette hit a ball 112.4 mph last season as his hardest hit (not his career max), that was good for 85th percentile in 2022.

yeah it's definitely close to plus raw power. it the upper end of the first standard deviation.

252 qualified hitters in statcast last year... 112.5 max EV would be 75th of 252

that's like 70th percentile

also at 112.5 max EV in 2022: Renfroe, Trea Turner, Sal Perez

I have this in my head as a rule of thumb:

<104 = 20 raw power

104 = 30 begins

108 = 40 begins

110 = "pure" 50

113 = 60 begins

115 = 70 begins

118 = 80 begins

almost 70% of mlb players should be between like 108 and 113, that's roughly the two lines one SD around mean raw power

some of these might be off by 1 mph

Does Statcast factor in qualified hitters in their percentiles? They give Bo, Sal Perez roughly ~85th percentile, which would seem too high based on your calculations. Obviously qualified is a better measure since more PAs means more opportunities to achieve your “true” max EV.

I bet their percentiles include ALL players of all samples. That will push regulars up as the other plays in the sample will be worse

but, for Varsho it doesn't really matter. whether you put a 57 or a 60 on the raw power is basically the same.

Well kids, today we learned why defense, hitting the cut off man, base running, taking the extra base, situational hitting and making contact matters.

As an added bonus, you learnt why pitching matters.

We hoped you enjoyed this lesson block.

What type of animal do you make when you mix a SABER dude with a “Dinosaur” Old School baseball guy.. ?

What the Hell!? Am I the ONLY ONE who had no idea that the season started today?!?!? Opening day in March!? WHAT DA

Don't worry, the game wasn't exciting at all.

Total lack of creativity. There should’ve been a countdown thread with some sort of different numerical thing, Bluejay related. Luckily I found out by BTS trolling the leader of Fantasy Baseball, who was also asleep at the wheel today

We also learned the importance of scoring 10 runs.

Vlad looked as fit as I have seen him. His play to get the runner at home was impressive.

Does that mean Bo looks out of shape

That was a great play

My favourite play was Kiermaier going first to third

That was a very heads-up play. Likely don’t win if he doesn’t do that

Is nobody running the home run contest this year

Man, this is a major oversight... That's always so fun!

On the plus side, nobody would have won.

It's going to take me some time to get used to watching Kiermaier on the Jays. It still seems weird watching the highlights.

Looks like KK brought some of his last inning magic with him to the Jays. Here's hoping no one else on the Rays has any left and the "curse" is no longer applicable from now on.
