deanmike Verified Member Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 Jays have serious interest in Joc for the open DH/OF role available. I wouldn't mind Joc but would heavily prefer Hoskins. I believe they are still looking for another 3B (names like Turner and Urshela have been linked to the team for this role), as IKF was marketed by Rogers mouthpieces as a super utility bench add.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 Jays really need to act on Bieber, the Yanks fans are pumping him.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 We got Kooch Geeb we'll be ok......me thinking to myself........Homer Simpson thought...... O it's Shane Bieber and he's my Number 1 Starter in the MLB.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 Pederson is a great fit. I'd give him a second year if that's what it takes. Would be fine with the Garver contract. He's a butcher in the OF but at least you can throw him there for a short period of time. He can probably pick up a 1B glove. Think he has stood there for a few games recently Nearly a .370 xwOBA last year..... need that. Perfect Belt replacement on offense.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 Frenchy just lost it. Homophobic slurs mixed with seemingly talking to some "Geeb" person who does not exist. Also, he thinks Kyle Higashioka and Anthony Rizzo are legends. 3 day ban needed but he needs serious help. Yikes.
deanmike Verified Member Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 Let's say the Jays sign Joc and 1 of Urshela/Turner to split 3B with IKF and maybe a bit of Biggio (if the team puts any stock in his 2023 SSS at 3B), they would presumably take Otto Lopez and Horwitz's spots on the 26-man. Also assuming Espinal is moved, there could still be a fit for a lefty mashing platoon OF to take his roster spot (someone like Grichuk/Duvall). There's also obviously a possibility one or more of these holes could be filled through trade instead of FA.

harvey16 Verified Member Posted December 31, 2023 Posted December 31, 2023 Jays need to get Joc Pederson. He's a perfect fit for the Jays. Gives us a legitimate DH and a power LH bat. He would be the perfect replacement for Belt. Need to make this happen even if it means adding an extra year to the contract.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 Well here goes attempt two after I accidentally deleted the post. Happy new years everyone. I spent this afternoon hanging out with my pal and the actual source of all information. The biggest takeaway I had is the team is trying to work on a massive franchise altering trade, think something like 92 where you take from the MLB roster to add to the MLB roster. The teams preference is not avoid doing so but they're balking at the asking price on prospects, the TV deal fiasco is causing a lot of issues with trades and is slowing down free agency. Tiedeman is available if the team can get in his words "a 4-5 win player with 3-4 years of control if you were looking at FanGraphs". Interest in the Cuban starter is real, thinks the team has approached him about more of a bulk reliever or swing man role. Manoah and Espinal are both getting a lot of trade interest from teams. Teams like that they're under control and affordable. Teams view Espinal as an everyday SS for basically nothing if it allows them to drop salary based on their new economic outlook. Thinks Espinal is just a matter of time but expects the off season to stay as slow as it is. Manoah they're not getting fair value back so its looking less likely he'll be moved unless it's in a package. Team has ownerships go ahead to eat a few bad contracts if it makes the team a lot better and doesn't add to the payroll dramatically for 4+ years. No formal offer in on Bellinger but one was made on Chapman in November, not sure if it's still out there. They've asked Boras to circle back on Bellinger when the term, not dollar value comes down. Vladdy is working with Jays staff in Florida to correct a mechanical issue they identified in May that he refused to work with their staff during the season. Team has a lot of belief he'll rebound from 2023 but they were done with his stubbornness. They are hoping that now that hes a bit older he'll have fewer brainfarts on the basses and on D. Mattingly and Vlad have a good relationship and Mattingly was the one who identified the issue with Guerrero's swing in May. I inquired about a Guerrero extension and he can state the conversation has never even happened. I asked why and he says the team saw what happened once the team left MiLB parks in 2021, it was basically identical output to what he did in 2022, within something like 5%, which is a slightly above league average player. Team knows he is young, IIRC he's the youngest player on the team, so they're fine with seeing him put up some consistency. I did ask about prospects the team is high on and he said obviously Horowitz, if he could hit left handed pitching he would have been up earlier in the season. Alan Roden is the teams internal number one position player prospect - 20/20 potential, well above average D in a corner (likely LF), likely to hit for a higher average with a high OBP and run into a lot of doubles. I was a bit surprised and asked about Martinez and the team loves the bat but doesn't think he has a position, they're hoping he could do something like Dan Uggla and be an ugly defensive 2B with enough of a bat to still be a good (he later defined this a 3 win player using fWAR for public information). His defensive issues are throwing, he has a weird sidearm motion and horrendous footwork on the left side of the infield. I did ask about Barger and he is a RF, may still get reps at 2B/3B but but view him as a RF. Similar issues with footwork to Martinez but the arm is elite and plays in RF. Need to see what the bat does in 2024.

Also makes me think WTF an issue identified in May and for whatever reason the communication/mentality is4 there to fix it until 2024? I would like to see the big trade have Vladdy going out. Tatis & Cronenworth or Machado vice Tatis would work. We would need to eat some bad contracts.

His upside is much, much higher than other available options, and we (may) have the flexibility to take on a contract as well, especially in an area of need. If teams really are that cash strapped, it would make a ton of sense.

Need to see what the bat does in 2024. Awesome stuff as always man. It sounds like there could be some really exciting moves yet to come this offseason. I'll certainly make do if the front office decides to focus on short term sensible 1 or 2 year deals, but the idea of adding impact talent is always fun to dream about. These updates have me very hopeful for a big year from Vlad, although reports about him refusing to work with the team in season to address mechanical issues is a little disheartening. It was very apparent that something was off with Vlad's swing/timing this season given the frequency he was fouling off meatballs at the plate and often seemed a bit late starting his swing. The 2021 minor league park thing is interesting, but I finally determined how to pull the home away splits on a monthly basis and the narrative that Vlad could only hit in minor league parks in 2021 is largely borne out of a short 3 week slump that Vlad experienced, as he struggled upon returning home to Rogers Center and experienced a massive rebound to end the season. He didn't manage to hit home runs with the same regularity in Rogers Center when he heated up again but the overall numbers were still exemplary once he worked his way out of the slump. He never managed to reach the dizzying heights that he experienced in Dunedin but the overall Buffalo and Rogers Centers numbers are very comparable once Vlad got the bat going again. Vlad performed very well on the road in the first 4 months of 2021, but his home numbers are astonishing. Over the first 4 months or so Vlad produced an overall 185 wRC+. Dunedin 262 wRC+ Buffalo 203 wRC+ Home 46 G 202 PA .361/.465/.805/1.270 OPS 21 HR 226 wRC+ 15.8% BB 17.3% K Away 44 G 230 PA .298/.387/.525/.912 OPS 12 HR 148 wRC+ 11.7% BB 17.0% K Shortly after the team returned home to Canada Vlad hit the skids and experienced a short slump that lasted for about 3 weeks. 21 G 94 PA .220/.319/.305/.624 OPS 2HR 11.7% BB 18.1% K 69 wRC+ Vlad emerged from this slump and ended the season on a heater and displayed that he was able to mash at Rogers Center to levels approaching what he managed in the minor league ballparks. He ended the season producing a combined 169 wRC+ over the last 5 weeks or so. Home 20G 86 PA .351/.419/.701/1.120 OPS 7HR 9.3% BB 10.5% K 193 wRC+ Away 18G 81 PA .288/.358/.534/.892 OPS 5HR 9.9% BB 12.3% K 143 wRC+ I recall the explanation that was offered up at the time of the slump was that Vlad started to struggle, overworked himself in the cage trying to get himself right, and eventually backed off the extra work a bit and managed to regain his form. I am very excited about Roden, perhaps his potential impact not too far into the future is part of what has the club looking into shorter term deals for the outfield for the next year or so. Between Roden and Barger that's two potential outfield options although Barger had a bit of a rough season with the bat. I heard that he had some sort of elbow issue that could potentially require offseason surgery but haven't read any updates since the season ended. Edited January 1, 2024 by max silver
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 Orelvis being a butcher defensively is disappointing. He had a clear path to the big leagues if he was a 3B but sounds like he’s barely a 2B. Not sure what to think of his potential impact at this point. Roden and Barger being legit OF prospects would be nice. The Jays don’t develop LHH outfielders very often. The only “franchise altering trade” would have to involve Bichette or Vlad. No one else on the big league roster is moving the needle that much. I doubt we will see something like that this winter but who knows.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 I know ok Vlad there were articles by Davidi insinuating the coaching stuff with Vladdy. I think it’s going to be interesting to see what happens with the balance of the offseason. I know the KK stuff happened really fast, Atkins called his agent as KK let the team know he was open to coming back at the end of the season and an hour later a verbal agreement was in place. KK and his wife love the city. I know the team has been looking for OF help and I think they still want one more whether it’s someone like Bellinger who can play all 3 OF and 1B which lets everyone get load management. I think it means if Belli does happen we would need a DH that can play a position.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 It’s also worth keeping in mind how young Martinez is. Just because he’s bad at 2B today doesn’t mean he can’t become a passable one when he gets more experience. I actually had a pretty funny New Year’s Eve, we went to our next door neighbours place for a few drinks and I got to meet his brother who works on upper management with the Brewers lol. We didn’t talk baseball or anything but it was a reminder about how small the world is.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 Yeah if the Blue Jays were to make a massive franchise altering deal, likely involves either Bo, Vladdy or someone like Gausman. I think Bo and/or Vlad are the most likely. They have two years remaining, still young and have upside. Trading one or both of them changes the makeup of the team for sure. Jays likely are past the point of a contract extension with both so might as well move them now if it means getting other elite MLB talent back to help the roster and to shake things up. Can't see the Jays moving Gausman given he's their ace, would be tougher to replace and on a great contract but who knows. Obviously Atkins isn't done, and we all know it's been a slow offseason not just for the Jays but most of baseball. Things should start picking up this month and looking forward to seeing what the Jays could do.

I'm cool with trading Bo if the rumors are true and he isn't amenable to signing an extension before he reaches free agency. I'm incredibly hesitant to ship Vlad at this point given how young he is and the tremendous upside he still offers. I have serious doubts the eventual return would be close to the value Vlad will offer the team if he finally reaches his ceiling year in and year out.
