3-4 weeks with abuela during the holidays sounds like a recipe for disaster. He might lose 40 pounds alright, but it could be after he's already gained 40 during Christmas.

Being fit is only half the issue with him. He needs some mechanical adjustments at the plate as well. But one step at a time.

His body shape/type affects his mechanics.. So they have a symbiotic relationship IMO.
