Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 ROS Bass is the better pitcher easily. He had a rough April but appeared to be turning a corner. 2.38 FIP in May. Meanwhile, White has been pitching like complete ass in AAA. He just doesn't look right. But Bass is old, a FA at the end of the year, and is in the middle of a shitstorm. The team also bungled this by having him take the first pitch which put Bass and the team in a weird spot after Bass' latest comments. White is younger and could have a future with the team if he turns things around. He also has the ability to maybe go multiple innings (idk if he can go one inning right now tbh) which could be in his favor with Bowden Francis being the new #5 SP. They also had to call up White or DFA him and I doubt the team wanted to do the latter after just acquiring him for a guy who is now making Top 100 lists. So it makes some baseball sense as Bass was toward the bottom anyway. But as for the other stuff, I know one side of the political aisle is going to be rejoicing but I don't like the precedent this sets for the team. Disagree with Bass all you want but there's a lot of Christian MLB players in this league and the Jays don't want to become the franchise that is known as being "hostile" to Christian players and families. The rest of MLB might not be happy with this precedent either. Kershaw, Trevor Williams and others have spoken out but there's now a team there that will cut you if you do so. MLB fans are also much more conservative than other sports leagues too. I think Atkins needs to stress that this was largely a baseball move because it kind of was. No way this team cuts him if he was even their 8th inning guy over this.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Yep. Mitch can eat innings, Bass can't. We need someone to eat up innings in a blowout Are you sure about that? Because Mitch couldn't even get through one inning down in Buffalo.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Yep. Mitch can eat innings, Bass can't. We need someone to eat up innings in a blowout White also has a small chance of actually turning things around and becoming a decent depth SP option. Bass is what he is
mphenhef Verified Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Has anyone seen an update on Keirmeier? Is this team TOO attractive with both White and KK?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 This does nothing to help with the "Toronto Tax" on free agents we already experience. Another side-effect that some of you guys probably don't think about. Gotta remember probably a good 30-40% of players in the league share Bass' views I say way more than 30-40%. A lot of players just keep their personal beliefs and thoughts to themselves, which is a good thing.

If you thought it was getting better for Toronto on the free agent front... it probably just got a lot worse/harder now.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 I'm not sure the sideshow had anything to do with this Could have been purely a baseball choice Yimi Garcia has better FIP and xFIP numbers. Adam Cimber is controllable for 2024. They can't lose Mitch White right now, despite how poorly he was throwing in the minors.

I think they showed they were willing to give him a chance at least, but he absolutely butchered things with his statements yesterday and really backed them into a corner. There is a way to handle these things and I think Bass went off script in a very bad way yesterday making the front office look very bad in a delicate situation. He's got no one to blame but himself and I suspect other players would understand that. Hell, I gaurantee there are others in the clubhouse who feel similar to Bass but are smart enough to stay quiet.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Notice: We aplologize to all you Alphabets and Rednecks, but tonights Bass display has been cancelled.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Mitch White will help in theory since he can eat up innings out of the pen, but if the innings are similar to what he has been throwing in the minors then that won’t help at all. If Bass were Romano, then the Jays would have found a way to keep him regardless of the media s*** show but Bass being a fungible middle reliever wasn’t worth the headache, especially for a corporate owned team.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 It's also weird why they let the situation play out for over a week. I think if this was because of what Bass reposted, he likely would have been DFAd last week. Why go through all that and then DFA him a week after he made two appearances to apologize etc. Unless TD or Rogers went to Shapiro/Atkins before this weekend and said get rid of him. Otherwise, likely a baseball decision based on the struggles Bass had and the fact they had to call up Mitch White at some point. Timing wise given Francis/BP game on Saturday and with Kikuchi tonight, Jays don't want to burn through their pen so at least White gives them innings to eat up if need be.

Nothing but Bass did make some more comments.

They've already admitted he won't start. So making the move to serve the woke is the worst thing I could imagine. He doesn't have a name: he's just the woke's bitch.

Not sure the front office is "woke" but obviously this more impacts Rogers and big sponsors like TD, who are both extremely woke and are deeply tied with the Blue Jays. So wouldn't surprise me if they had a final say in all of this.

Adam Cimber is controllable for 2024. They can't lose Mitch White right now, despite how poorly he was throwing in the minors. Some people don't believe in reason though. White > Bass. He has a higher ceiling and is more controllable. He's had bouts of above average pitching. 2 month span last year as a starter for the Dodgers he put up a 3.05 ERA. You don't really want to throw that away to keep a 35 yr old below average RP in the back of your pen.

Yeah I think higher ups in Rogers and TD probably made the call last night, especially after the last couple of comments Bass made yesterday. From the sounds of it before, Atkins and the FO was working with Bass to improve the optics of the situation with his apology and planned on still keeping him around.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 Woah - are you suggesting that all Christians are not accepting of the LGBTQ+ community? I'd always thought that while the vast majority do not believe in LGBTQ+ practices, they are accepting that people with those views exist (just as they expect people to accept their religion) and don't have any issue walking past a pride display, just like others have to walk past their displays of cross necklaces, fish stickers and other religious symbols/clothing. I assumed that Bass was in a small minority that is both Christian and not accepting. I would have thought most Christians who are accepting would be upset that Bass was using the Christian religion as a façade to justify why he was not accepting of the LGBTQ+ community and would be trying to remove those hateful people accordingly and thus would applaud the Jays for cutting Bass. You're telling me that's not true? Holy f*** that is messed up. If that's the case - you have no right to complain if someone shits all over your religion and makes fun of you. I'm sure this will get deleted, but it's fascinating to me. Lol this is so stupid it hurts. You people are incapable of discussing this issue without injecting your own personal beliefs into this. Stankyleg and I are merely pointing out the obvious, that the league is made up of shitloads of American southern baseball players who are religious. And one of them just got the axe from the Blue Jays for simply liking a video could become the narrative.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2023 Posted June 9, 2023 If a conservative doesn’t like something they just don’t take part in it. If a liberal doesn’t like something they want it banned so no one can take part in it. Right - just like Bass and the other conservatives were pushing to boycott Target, and Bud Light because they didn't like it? Got it. This is next level stupidity.
