Key22 Verified Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 He’s probably middle of the pack maybe high teens. I don’t think he’s a great Shortstop. But I also don’t think liability there either. As long as he doesn’t try to kill an Outfielder this season chasing a ball into the Outfield we should be fine. It's also okay to have a bat-first shortstop - it's not the end of the world. I would take a Derek Jeter any day. It would be great if you could have a Jeter Bat with Ozzie Smith's defence - but that's likely not to be.

It is if the bat is well above average (which Bo's is - career wRC+ 127), and it helps if the rest of the IF defense is good. Chapman is elite. Vladdy is good. Now who is going to get the most playing time at 2B? Espinal, Merrifield, Biggio? And are we OK with that...

Jays have elite D pretty much everywhere around the diamond except SS. If Bo could get up to an average level of defense at SS, this is probably one of the all time great defensive teams.

Espinal will also get reps at SS and 3B. Biggio at 1B and corner OF. Merrifield at all 3 OF positions. I just have no clue where the heck the 26th man will ever play. Any OF/RP out there? Gose maybe

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 So does a guy signed as as an OF but with pitching ability (say, Gose is signed as an OF) count toward the 13 pitcher limit if occasionally used as a mop up RP?

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 f*** it would have been nice if Bogaerts had taken the Jays offer. Nice to have options after signing a premier player playing a premier position for no acquisition cost besides money. Could move Bo to 2B, could trade him for a nice haul. f***ing Padres and Mets are an abomination. Hopefully neither one of them win a world series with their ridiculously bloated payrolls.
WryNGinger Verified Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 I feel like (if memory serves...Iron Chef reference...) Merrifield was the primary 2nd baseman towards the last part of 2022 and the post-season. I think it will be his job to lose in spring training.

I hope he gets a lot of duty in the OF as well because we desperately need a RH bat out there.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 So does a guy signed as as an OF but with pitching ability (say, Gose is signed as an OF) count toward the 13 pitcher limit if occasionally used as a mop up RP? So I looked up LAA on Roster Resource. Ohtani is listed as both a hitter and a pitcher. And with that, LAA has 14 pitchers listed. The Jays have 13 pitchers listed. So it appears two-way players do not count towards the 13 pitcher limit. Someone like Gose as an OF/RP, or a Lorenzen as an OF/RP would be a pretty good fit as 26th man. Few PA, but would help in other areas.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Teams can also designate players as two-way players if they meet certain criteria. Two-way players are able to pitch in any situation but don't count toward the active roster's pitcher total. Players qualify for the two-way designation if they have met both of these conditions in either the current or previous MLB season: • Pitched at least 20 Major League innings • Played at least 20 Major League games as a position player or designated hitter, with at least three plate appearances in each game
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Most of these other "two way" guys like Lorenzen, Gose, etc. don't do enough of the other thing to meet MLB's definition of two-way player.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Well, that's that then. 60 PA for Gose, ugh. For Lorenzen might not be too bad. Maybe the kittens will give him that, to boost his trade value.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Hah... dumbass. No kidding. I saw this and had to read it about 15 times to try and figure out if he was really saying something so dumb. Basically since the last trade deadline they lost Gurriel, Hernandez and Tapia and replaced them with Varsho, Kiermairer, Merrifield and Belt. In terms of WAR the new group has every chance of being better. In fact this is such a deep team the Jays have every chance of being near the top again, because they'll be able to mix and match given who is performing. It's a dumb stat anyway because Tapia was just barely above replacement, so there were 500 PAs there that just made 'the cut'. Pretty unlikely they'll have someone as bad as Tapia taking up 500 PAs this year.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Korrys closed?...rather go there than to Toms Place....just going by the radio ads on CFRB Toms is incredible. The pop up sales at Miles Nadal, you could get such a good deal. Especially if you bought multiple.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 And a quick follow up, the escalators attached are purely based on the MVP award: "His salary would escalate in all following seasons by $2.25 million for winning an MVP award, by $1.25 million for finishing second or third in the voting and by $250,000 for finishing fourth or fifth." Pretty safe escalators that are unlikely to pay out.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Hah... dumbass. Most of those teams on the left went into the season knowing they were non-contenders so they fielded a crappy team or let young potentials play Angels don't have that excuse Just wow

I saw it noted somewhere they had the best top 3 hitters cumulatively in baseball last season, but the bottom 6 were by far the worst.

Rendon is back (for now) and they traded for Renfroe, Urshela and O'Hoppe. And they signed Drury. Those guys should soak up a ton of the non-Trout/Ohtani ABs this year. They also signed Brett Phillips but he probably hurts the situation.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 They'll find a way to be s***** again. Probably this year it will be the sketchy bullpen and the lack of SP depth.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 The rotation depth could be okay. The 1-5 is pretty good. Ohtani Tyler Anderson Patrick Sandoval Jose Suarez Reid Detmers But it will depend on this group of FV 40-45 backend guys and if they can get any of them to pan out. I guess they are the Angels so they will probably all suck. Tucker Davidson Chase Silseth Griffin Canning Ky Bush Sam Bachman The bullpen does suck though.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Canning was doing OK before he got hurt. Also the Angels have kind of said they are using a 6 man rotation, or close to it, IIRC
