Ohtani is going to stay in LA. But it won't be as an Angel. Dodgers have a bunch of contracts coming off the books.

Dodgers or Mets. Could see Seattle making a run too

I could see his logic, though. He would have been a free agent at age 31, a full three seasons away, and at this point it looks like he's a corner OF instead of a CF which diminishes his value a bit. There was a lot going against him waiting for free agency. He tried to force his way out, which may have gotten him a bigger extension if he were traded to a non-cheap team, but when that ship sailed, he took the guaranteed money/security rather than risk waiting. It's a good deal for the Pirates, and Reynolds at least gets to say he got a $100 million contract.

As much as I would hate to see Nutting rewarded for his cheapness, I hope this is the beginning of a nice run for the Pirates. That fanbase will support a consistent winner and they have one of the best stadiums in the league. Cherington did alright all things considered. He took over a lousy team in 2020, stripped what was left of it down, and by 2023 they are starting to at least look competitive. We will see how long that lasts this season, and what happens in the future.

Agree with all of this.

Am I missing something on this deal? Seems terrible for Reynolds

Nope. Apparently he came down 30 million from his initial asking price because he wanted to stay in Pittsburgh.

I appreciate that, you rarely see loyalty like that anymore. JRamirez was another one.

Somewhat odd timing on the Reynolds deal, with him currently being away from the team on the bereavement list.

Pirates called him up while he was all sad and s***

shameful

Don't think Seattle is gonna pay, but if they do, Ohtani and Castillo will be a disgustingly impossible 1-2.

He got a 6 team NTC also, though his 10 and 5 rights will kick in towards the end of that deal as well, assuming he isn't traded before then

Yeah Ohtani likely signs with the Dodgers. Second favourites would be the Mets or Yankees. Maybe the Mariners or Red Sox are sleepers.

Yeah I think it's a good deal for Reynolds to take now like you said. If he becomes a FA at 31 and as a corner OF, likely won't be a huge market for him, unless he is posting 6 WAR seasons consistently.

Lol this is great

I like that attitude lol.

Heh, well, the numbers back it up. He called it a sweeper but it's really his curveball and his curve is getting shelled this year to the tune of a .917 SLG and .563 wOBA. That's probably some kind of bad luck for sure, but still, maybe back off that pitch for a bit.

I agree but he'll only be 14 month older than Nimmo was when he entered free agency. His Arb over the next two years would have likely been $26M approximately. It's probably an equal amount of risk for both team and player

The batterization of the AL Central continues

One AL Central team would be in rhe top 5 in the AL East

Every other team is under 500 already

Yankees lose to Twins, who have already won their season series for the first time in over 20 years.

The White Sox really surprises me. They've been in top 10 payroll at times, occasionally in the top 5. I guess they've focused more on short term contracts.

Yeah, their highest FA deal actually came this season, giving Benintendi 75 million over 5

I'm shocked Paul Konerko never got a $100 million contract from them back in the day haha.

But yeah they did mostly focus on short term contracts for free agents and vets. In the mid 2000's, Jermaine Dye, Jose Contreras, El Duque, Jim Thome etc. Most of their talent developed, they never signed to long term deals before they became FA's or they traded them before free agency like Chris Sale.

Yeah same, the other two are no surprise at all. ChiSox are in a huge market, albeit sharing obviously. Would have assumed they've had multiple major contracts.

Pathetic look for the White Sox if we are being blunt.

Aren’t you a closet Rays fan? They have Longoria, who didn’t make it through the deal and who else?

It would not be a pathetic look for the White Sox if they were any good. But they suck all the time.

The Rays are always good. They are beyond criticism.

When you see who owns the White Sox, it probably shouldn’t be a huge surprise.

I hate the Rays with a passion but they just signed Franco to a massive deal before he had a year of service. I mean that deal is still going to be a steal for them but $182m guaranteed is a big commitment for a team like that.
